Richard K. Yancy Sand Levee Campground
Richard K. Yancy Sand Levee Campground, near the heart of Louisiana's wildlife management areas, is a no-frills spot perfect for those who enjoy a more primitive camping experience. With a laid-back vibe, it’s a great place to kick back, enjoy nature, and maybe even spot some local wildlife.
This campground allows fires, so you can gather around the flames and share stories under the stars. Just keep in mind that there are no amenities like drinking water or toilets, so come prepared. One visitor mentioned, “We slept great here in our tent,” highlighting the peacefulness of the area, though some noted the noise from nearby traffic can be a bit disruptive at times.
For outdoor lovers, the campground is close to excellent fishing spots and hiking trails, making it a solid base for your adventures. As one camper pointed out, “There is lots of wildlife to encounter,” so keep your eyes peeled for raccoons, possums, and even armadillos during your stay.
While the campground is pretty basic, it offers a unique chance to connect with nature without the distractions of modern conveniences. If you’re looking for a quiet escape where you can truly rough it, this spot might just be what you need.
Description
Fish and Wildlife Service
Camping: LDWF maintains five primitive camping areas on Richard K. Yancey WMA. There are all-weather access roads as well as a source of potable water at the Shell Road camping area. Richard K. Yancey WMA lies between the Mississippi and Red rivers, beginning north of Lower Old River. The WMA’s terrain is typically flat to depressed; the only significant changes in relief are elevated roads, levees, and a large manmade sand ridge. Numerous small lakes and bayous are formed by the area’s relatively poor drainage pattern. A large portion of the land is subject to annual spring flooding by the Red and Mississippi rivers. Timber on the property consists of mixed bottomland hardwoods. The primary overstory species are bitter and sweet pecan, overcup and nuttall oak, bald cypress, honey locust, hackberry, sycamore, and green ash. There are almost pure stands of cottonwood and willow along the manmade sand ridge. LDWF has planted approximately 265,000 hardwood seedlings on about 800 acres of former agricultural lands and annually maintains abandoned oil well sites and rights-of-way as wildlife openings.
