Morefield Campground — Mesa Verde National Park

    Mesa Verde’s Gateway

Morefield Campground, located just inside Mesa Verde National Park, offers a convenient and scenic basecamp for exploring the park’s incredible ancient cliff dwellings and stunning landscapes. The campground is spacious and well-organized, with over 250 sites that accommodate tents, RVs, and trailers. The setting is peaceful, with sweeping views of mesas and easy access to trails like the Point Lookout Trail.

Amenities are a highlight here, including flush toilets, showers, a well-stocked camp store, and even a fuel station. It’s an excellent choice for families or those who appreciate a few comforts while camping.

However, campers should be prepared for sudden and severe weather. The high desert location can bring intense storms with strong winds. During our stay, our tent nearly flew away despite being staked down securely, so it’s worth bringing extra gear like sandbags or heavy-duty stakes to keep your setup anchored.

Overall, Morefield Campground is an excellent choice for exploring Mesa Verde, combining convenient amenities with a beautiful natural setting. Just keep an eye on the weather and pack accordingly to ensure a comfortable stay.

    Tons of sites

While kind of on the pricier side for campgrounds I really enjoyed my 2 nights there in early Oct 24. Easy access to get on the road to the cliff dwellings early in the day, flush bathrooms, tons of sites, trails nearby, a little center with a store, cafe, gas, and most importantly showers.

They let you pick your site which is nice so I got a site with a flat spot for my rooftop tent, but some sites are definately more geared to tent camping, but there are tons of site options.

    Would stay again.

    The Views and BBQ

Location is all I can Say. Every direction you look is beautiful, onsite restaurant is great, drinks are good, sites level, might need a little updated showers and bathroom to match price. While area is a 10 of 10. Wish we would’ve stayed much longer.

Welcoming park in a great location

From the time we pulled into the campground,  full of grass with huge trees, we felt at home. We had a warm greeting and received a welcome gift with yummy treats and fresh eggs. We were led to our spot that backed up to a creek. There was a fire pit, fire wood, bbq, table and chair swing at the camp spot. Also included are free laundry facilities, movies on a big screen (popcorn included) and we were lucky enough to have a band play one day and a solo guitarist another. Scott goes out of his way to make you comfortable. It was raining when we were watching the band play, he brought us an umbrella to use, very thoughtful. We would recommend this place to everyone, dog friendly, kid friendly, with a play area for both. There are nice tent camping spots as well.

    Extremely strict cancellation policy

Made a Rez 5 months ago and didn’t see the fine print cancellation policy stating 14 days out no refund. I had to make new plans due to unforeseen circumstances and called to find out that 13 days out is too bad for me. Not any concessions or credits for future stays, nada zilch. So for a slow time of year they just print money hoping no sees their fine print. I’m a business man and I’ve always seen rules as an opportunity to make someone’s day not motivation to make negative reviews. Maybe I’m old school but there was zero expense on their part and 5 months of cash holding for them. I guess their business is doing so well that they send people the other direction when looking for a place to stay

Don’t let the dilapidated mobile home near the entrance scare you away. This place is super well maintained. Every site is well thought out and has great hookups. I thought a plug water and sewer was pretty uniform. Our site had a pedestal with 20/30/50 amp and then another with 30 20 feet further into the site. Lots of shade. The sites along the south edge of the property have amazing views of the Cortez valley and Sleeping Ute Mountain. Really nice communal fire pit, dog park and some trails too. Some sites have a beautiful brick fire ring too.

    Depends on what you value

I value space, privacy, value and and quality of the area.  This is a old campground purchased by a multi park company.  It is on a twisty, multi curved 2 lane about 7 miles from downtown Durango.  It is in what is/was a beautiful small canyon with numerous aspen and other trees.  It has a creek which flows part of the year.  That said, it is crowded, with your neighbors sewer connection next to your picnic table.  The spaces are short.  If your RV/toad  or travel trailer plus pickup is much over 48 feet, you'll be out in the road.  They WILL put you in too small a space.  My pickup, parked overnight was damaged by someone trying to make the too tight turn at the end of the campground.  The beauty of the place is totally compromised by not just the rv spaces but multiple cabins dotting the hills around and tent sites, etc. etc.  If you value quality of experience , this is not the place for you.

    Secluded rv park

Lovely little rv park just outside of town. Clean bathrooms, pool, little trail to walk to stretch your legs and well priced. 24 hr laundromat and not overcrowded. With as many empty spaces as they had, you’d think they wouldn’t have needed to put some rvs so close together.

Review for tent sites #1 to #3

The tent space#2 that we stayed in was barely a site. Carved out of the slope, the quite small site was not flat, limiting the way we could sleep.

The ground was covered with coarse wood chips– hardly an ideal surface to place a tent on. Both#1 and#3 sites seemed to be in the middle of the drive, making you feel like you were intruding just to leave the site.

#1 was also small and delineated with the same wood chips on the ground. Glad we didn’t get stuck there.

The larger RV/camper sites appeared to be quite nice. The pool was a welcome benefit.

Beautiful tree covered rv park along a creek full hookups and much more

Scott, the Manager is such a nice guy. He goes out of his way to make everyone happy. The park is clean and well maintained. Lots of grassy areas for kids and dogs. Lots of trees and peacefulness. Full electric water and waste hookups. Free Laundry, Shower rooms and bathrooms in the center of the park. A small fenced grass dog park. A nice little store with plenty of necessities. Just 1 hour South of Telluride and 1 hour West of Durango.

    Don't stay here

My family and I have been to so many different campgrounds over the years and this one was the worst one I've ever seen. When we got there the place was filled with signs that basically said children couldn't do anything or only registered guests can do this. They also advertise putt putt but they had a tree that hung over one of the holes 2 feet off the ground making it almost impossible to play. As we got there a thunder storm was coming in making us uncomfortable setting up a tent. When we asked about switching to a cabin she told us it was a 2 night minimum and didn't even ask if we wanted to pay for 2 nights even though the cabins were completely empty. We ended up asking if we could car camp and she was very hesitant to even let us. When we got to our site it was so uneven and unmaintained that we couldn't even set up a tent if we wanted. There was also barely any gravel and with the rain car camping was a no. Even though we couldn't stay there because of the conditions she refused to give us a refund even a partial refund. As we were leaving with no place to stay she started smirking. We had to sleep at the Loves because everything else was booked. I'm am very disappointed, avoid this place at all cost.

Wow!!! There is so much to say about this place. The best rv park I have ever been to.  Scott the ower was magnificent. From the welcome basket that had eggs coffee and banana nut bread, to the clean restrooms and showers. WOW. I can't stress this enough. That this place is great. They have 2 little dog parks. A basketball court. Lots of toys for the kids and adults to play with. The onsite Laundry was amazing, and free to use. We will definitely make this a must stay in the future.

    Best Dog Friendly Place Around

We came on July 4th, and although many activities were going on, this place was quite like a mouse by Sunday. This place has everything: a massive field for dogs to play off-leash (they must be on in the park), a great restaurant, laundry, propane, a swimming pool, and a massive amount of outdoor activities.

    Oh, and supper friendly staff.

    Louder than Disneyland

Went there for the great reviews and outstanding local nature attractions. Sadly, this RV resort was in the middle of some sort of family reunion across from our site: At least 40 or more folks hooting and hollering and playing loud music that could be heard across the valley, going on for hours without any type of drop-in from the resort management. Despite a previous reservation, I was stuck in a site with no shade from the sun or the reunion’s party. It didn’t help that the site’s pump water was mostly dirt and plugged my filter…
