Bright Star Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Painted pit toilets and Tibetan prayer flags mark the entrance to Bright Star Campground, a privately operated site just outside Cortez, Colorado for camping near Cortez that draws campers headed to Mesa Verde National Park. The approach involves a stretch of gravel and rocks, which reviewers note is manageable for most vehicles but worth knowing in advance, especially for motorcyclists. Once on-site, the layout opens up to unobstructed sightlines toward Ute Mountain to the west and the San Juan Mountains to the east, where afternoon storms are visible from a distance.

The communal setup is a defining feature here. A shared kitchen, stocked with supplies and including an ice machine, means campers can cook without hauling their own gear. "Perfect if you don't want to bring kitchen supplies because it is very well stocked," notes Mary A. A covered pavilion with foosball, cornhole, and ping pong adds to the communal feel, and solar-lit concrete pathways connect the main amenities after dark. The campground also includes an observation deck suited to watching sunsets over the mountains.

Accommodations range from full-hookup RV pads (including a large concrete "Star Pad" that fits at least a 21-foot rig) to teepees, bunk cabins, and what appears to be a yurt. The pit toilets get consistent attention in reviews. Natalie A. writes that staff cleaned them daily, calling them "the cleanest I've ever seen." WiFi is available on-site, though cell service is noted as inconsistent by several visitors.

Rates run $35-$99 per night depending on site type, and reservations are available. The campground is self-service in style, with check-in instructions sent by email. The map included in that email has confused some guests, but a short walk around the property tends to resolve any orientation questions. Pets are welcome. Nearby options include Cortez Mesa Verde KOA and Cortez RV Resort for campers who prefer a more conventional setup. Bright Star tends to work best for travelers who appreciate a communal camp atmosphere and don't mind a gravel approach road.

Great views! Good amenities and nice people.

We stayed at this campground for 7 nights at the full hookup 'Star Pad,’ which is a very large concrete pad with a grill and picnic table. I’m not sure what size RV it would fit but our 21” had plenty of space. We really loved the mountain views from all directions. The sunset views over Ute Mountain are really amazing too! To the east are the San Juan Mountains and we could watch the storms roll in over them and one evening even got to see a rainbow. There are 2 shower houses, one for men and one for women. There is a pavilion/game center that has crafts you can do, and a kitchen that everyone can use. There is another large pavilion called the chapel that they use for events. There are pit toilets that were the cleanest I’ve ever seen (and if you can call a pit toilet cute, these are- they are painted).. Everyday we saw the staff cleaning them. We were able to peek into some of the empty spaces. The teepees are super cool! I would highly recommend staying here. The hosts are genuinely nice and care about your comfort.

Throw back to summer camp

9/10 for logistics. This place is of the self-service variety. Only critique is the map (included in the registration email) was a bit hard to decipher. A quick wander of the premises cleared that up, though. Any other questions were answered by looking at their website. 10/10 for location. The views really are phenomenal. (Heads up to motorcyclists - you DO need to drive on gravel/rocks for a bit) 9/10 for amenities. We’re easy to please. The facilities brought us right back to summers spent at camp. Only comment is there is 1 sink in the toilet house, but luckily sharing was easy with the other camp-goers who also brush their teeth.

All in all, great place.

Great stay for Mesa Verde

This was such a good place to stay! First of all, manager John really saved the day when we needed to borrow a tent. He was very kind and helpful and made sure our trip continued without a hitch. The amenities are clean and convenient and we really enjoyed the shared kitchen! Perfect if you don’t want to bring kitchen supplies because it is very well stocked! Highly recommend!

Peaceful beauty.

Other reviews were not kidding about it being so peaceful here having plenty of amenities AND a cool vibe. They even have a fun house with ping pong, fooseball and other games. We woke up to a rainbow with a beautiful view of the Ute Mountains in the distance. Hosts are friendly and helpful, and location is just a few mile outside Cortez and has a couple great Mexican restaurants! This campsite even offers Teepees and cabins to stay in, a really unique opportunity for a nice experience.

Exceeded our expectations

This campground had so much to offer! Our original plan of camping in BLM land was foiled by the "elk and deer winter ranging" blocking off the majority of the dispersed camping areas around Mesa Verde National Park, but we were luckily able to land a spot at this amazing place! It may be lacking some cover, but it makes up for it in the large covered patio area that is packed with entertainment! They have foosball table, cornhole boards and ping pong to name a few! The kitchen was super handy so we didn't have to tap into our water tank for dishes. Owners were working hard on site to get the teepees up for the season and they were so friendly! A peaceful area that is just a quick drive from the park! All the main amenities were connected by concrete pathways that are lit by solar lights at night and you can tell they are continuously working and adding things to better the experience for future campers. They also have bunk cabins, teepees, sites with cover and I think we saw a yurt coming in. All in all, it was probably our favorite last minute campsite booking!

Welcome Home

The owner is a great guy. The place is great . It has bathroom, shower , and a kitchen . I used the food from the kitchen to cooked my breakfast in the morning. I left a tip .

My motorcycle and I camped here. It was little difficult to find it but if you call the number , they will guide you & send you a message for instructions on how to get to the site.

I rode all the way near the end. There are mailboxes on your right as well as 'Private Road' and 'Do Not Enter' signs. Follow the Camp sign LEFT, watching for the driveway o n the left marked with a white sign with our logo and address, posts with Tibetan prayer flags, a FUNKY FLASHING TRAFFIC SIGNAL & green gates.

I’ll camp here next time .

Diamond in the Rough

This is an absolutely amazing place to stay and camp in the desert. The owners are amazing and have gone above and beyond to make this place awesome. It’s like college dorm style living, but outside. Hot showers, pit toilets, and a fully appointed public kitchen with an ice machine really bring it all together. I really enjoyed using the kitchen and covered sitting area, which is nice to get out of the wind. The observation deck is also a great place to sit and watch the sunset and stars. I will be coming back to here again and again! Would be an awesome place for a teardrop camper.
