Tent campsites near Kiel, Wisconsin are concentrated in the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit area, where two group campgrounds offer spacious tent accommodations for small and large parties. Greenbush Group Campground provides large grassy sites surrounded by trees that accommodate multiple tents, while Northern Unit Greenbush Group Camp operates seasonally from April to November. Other options include Waubedonia County Park in Fredonia with basic amenities for tent campers and Wild Goose City Park in Juneau, which connects to a regional bike trail system.

Most tent camping areas provide basic amenities with varying levels of services. Greenbush sites feature drinking water and pit toilets accessible by a short walk, while offering plenty of trees for hammock setup. Sites are primarily on grassy terrain with natural surroundings. Waubedonia County Park includes electric hookups and water access for tent campers, making it suitable for those wanting slightly more amenities. Little Turtle Lake and Purplehaze Acres represent smaller, more primitive tent camping options with 5-9 sites each. Most locations permit fires and provide toilets, though shower facilities are rare except at Wild Goose City Park.

The tent camping experience varies across locations, with Greenbush Group Campground receiving particular praise for its spaciousness. A visitor noted that "Sites 2 and 9 are the largest. Those can each fit over 20 backpacking tents at the same time." The sites offer visual separation but may not block noise between campsites. A camper at Northern Unit Greenbush commented that "We could hear loud music from the site 4 late into the night" despite the visual barriers. Walk-in access is available at Purplehaze Acres for those seeking a more secluded tent camping experience. Smaller county parks like Waubedonia provide a "nice little getaway" with "inexpensive and comfortable" sites according to one reviewer, though with fewer amenities than larger campgrounds.

      Point Beach State Forest

Staying at the Point Beach State Forest campground. Being late in the season and not a weekend, we stayed in site A. This is the only lettered site, which is slightly confusing, but a very nice spot along the beach. From this site you have to walk up and down the large dune between the site and the beach. The dune is about 20 ft tall and does require some physical effort to get over. The site was pretty level and has decent foliage between it and the adjacent sites. There are lots of walking trails in the area and plenty of beautiful sandy beach to walk along. There is only a single dump station, and the queue was quite long on Sunday when we arrived. Check-in was at 3 PM and they enforced that strictly, at least for us. All sites appeared to be 30 amp service. This site is not good for Starlink. Unless you have a long enough cable to get it up on dune. The water and showers were shut off as of Oct 15th according to the signs. This is a very nice state forest campground we would recommend! There appear to be a few sites that stay open year round, but most close on 10/28. AT&T signal was typically 1-bar or no-signal.

      Lazy Days

      Do not stop here!!

We have been seasonal campers for many years! When we first started, everyone was very nice and we always had a great time. Each years the rules change a bit which is common. The last three years have been horrible! We have had nothing but issues that I brought up to the staff many times. I have had the workers ask me if I was f***in stupid, people stealing stuff off our lot, telling our guest we don’t camp there( even tho they knew they were coming for my daughters birthday party), and much more. They are extremely Strict on the 5 mph. They will scream at you if they see Gravel dust as you drive. The campground is not well maintained. I wish things would not have ended the way it has. I’m happy we found a better family friendly campground to be at where my kids are not scared to be playing in our lot!

Pike Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest - Pike Lake Unit

Near Ice Age Trail, open woods

Sites are large, well-spaced,  many shaded by wonderful large trees. The woods are very open with little understory, and much of the area facing the road is graveled, so you will still see your neighbors. So many hiking options - the Ice Age Trail connects to the campground only a few minutes walk away. Many hiking options, the walk to the Powder Hill Lookout tower is a must. Picnic area and waterfront are a short drive away. Bathrooms were clean and showers free, hot, and strong. Some traffic noise from highway nearby but quiet at night.

      Point Beach State Forest

Nice Campgrounds with a Beach and Hiking Trails

Overall this is a very nice campground. Not huge compared to other state parks, but not super small or quiet. Very family friendly. There is a very nice beach, as well as a few hiking trails on the property as well. The hiking trails are dog friendly, but the beach is not- you have to take your dog to the dog-friendly section of the beach, they aren’t allowed on the standard beach. Not too many bugs and no problematic wildlife.

T-Mobile had one to two bars of LTE (not 5G signal) depending on where you were. Good enough to send a text or make a (slow) Google search.

Mauthe Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit

      Unwelcoming Camp Hosts

My family has been camping at Mauthe Lake for decades, and every year we have to deal with camp hosts and rangers constantly monitoring us. We follow the rules and do not cause disruptions, and yet they constantly chew us out for very minor things. It makes me feel as if we’re not welcome on these grounds.

      Apple Creek Campground

      Sub-par campground

This is not a campground, it is an extended stay facility.  No sewer hookups, on upper level of camping, no dump station.  Air smells like the feedlot just east of the highway.

No tree limbs cleared for tall rigs, and dead limbs sticking out near roadside remain uncleared, to hit side of your rig.  Lower campground is scary to drive through!  Kids roaming and screaming, broke down cars......

Beware!  Not a pleasant place to get in/out or exist.

    Guide to Kiel

Tent camping near Kiel, Wisconsin centers around the Milwaukee River basin, with most sites situated within 30 miles of the city. The region features glacial topography with kettles, moraines, and drumlins that create varied camping terrain. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F with higher humidity levels during July and August.

    What to do

Bike the Wild Goose Trail: Wild Goose City Park connects directly to the regional bike trail system, offering miles of scenic riding. A visitor notes, "Wild Goose bike trail leads to this park in Juneau. It's a good place to stop and have a break. There's a playground and public bathroom, drinking fountain. Plenty of space to spread out for a picnic when you're biking through."

Fish local waterways: Waubedonia County Park provides access to the Milwaukee River, where campers can fish for smallmouth bass and northern pike. The riverside location makes it convenient for anglers staying overnight.

Hike glacial formations: The Kettle Moraine area features unique glacial landforms with several hiking trails ranging from 1-8 miles in length. Most trails are moderate difficulty with some elevation changes due to the moraine topography.

    What campers like

Spacious group sites: Greenbush Group Campground receives praise for its large camping areas. One camper reported, "Large sites great for groups. Sites 2 and 9 are the largest. Those can each fit over 20 backpacking tents at the same time. Grassy sites surrounded by trees (plenty for hammocks too)."

Easy Milwaukee access: Northern Unit Greenbush Group Camp provides a convenient weekend getaway from Milwaukee. As one visitor explained, "We booked this for a coronavirus-safe camping trip, and it did not disappoint. Water is usually available, but more limited during the pandemic."

Affordable county park camping: The smaller county parks near Kiel offer budget-friendly tent camping options with basic amenities. A camper at Waubedonia described it as "A nice little campgeound near the river in Fredonia, WI. The campsites are inexpensive and comfortable."

    What you should know

Water access varies seasonally: Water availability changes throughout the camping season at several sites. At Northern Unit Greenbush, a camper noted water limitations: "spigot turned off by our campsite, but available near the parking lot at the entrance - a longer walk."

Noise carries between sites: Despite visual barriers between campsites, sound travels easily in many Kiel area campgrounds. One camper at Northern Unit Greenbush reported, "The nine sites are visually separated, but not far enough away from each other to block louder noise - we could hear loud music from the site 4 late into the night."

Limited amenities at smaller sites: Little Turtle Lake and similar smaller campgrounds provide only basic facilities. Little Turtle Lake has only 5 sites with toilets but no drinking water, making it necessary to bring your own supplies.

    Tips for camping with families

Park amenities for children: Wild Goose City Park offers additional facilities beyond camping. A visitor mentioned, "There's a playground and public bathroom, drinking fountain. Plenty of space to spread out for a picnic when you're biking through."

Consider site capacity: When tent camping with family groups, check site limitations. At Purplehaze Acres, the 9 available sites vary in size, with some better suited for multiple tents than others.

Bathroom accessibility: For families with young children, consider proximity to toilet facilities. Greenbush campsites require "Short walk to pit toilets and drinking water," which might be challenging for nighttime bathroom trips with small children.

    Tips from RVers

Limited hookup options: Most tent camping areas near Kiel have few RV amenities. Waubedonia County Park is one exception, offering electric hookups and water access for RVs and tent campers alike.

Consider size restrictions: The campgrounds near Kiel generally accommodate smaller RVs only. None of the tent camping areas are listed as big-rig friendly, making them better suited for pop-ups or small trailers under 25 feet.

Walk-in tent options: For tent campers seeking separation from RV areas, Purplehaze Acres offers walk-in tent sites that provide more privacy and a more rustic camping experience away from hookup areas.
