Below Average

First, it’s difficult to find and difficult to call for directions if the one clerk in the truck stop office is busy, which is most of the time. Yes, it is full hookup and many sites are pull through. But, there’s truck noise all night which resembles a train that never stops.

Highest high

Beautiful spot to really get to see what you can't see down low, if you visit in the fall bring long sleeves because it is windy and quite a few degrees cooler then down below.

My favorite campground!

This was my first stop on my cross country trip from Virginia to California and out of all the amazing places I’ve seen, this is by far my favorite spot!

Small secluded campground

Less than 10 campsites situated in a small creek/canyon away fro the main park. Great for seclusion. Good tree cover. Pitted toilets, pay for showed down the road at the ranger station, hand pumped water on site. It was raining most of my stay so I was not able to full experience the attractions…

Ok for a KOA

We prefer state parks but had to stay here at a KOA because of availability (Labor Day Weekend). My biggest complaint with KOAs is the tightness of the sites - this one was not bad. They had concert pads for the picnic tables (loved that). But we were in the first loop and we were far from the…

Beautiful and Quiet.

Cannot recommend camping here enough!! Sites are well situated, and very private. Especially the walk up sites, they're the real gem. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring. Pit toilets are maintained, but towards the end of our trip there was no TP for the last two days. Prepare…

Beautiful by the River!!!!

I stopped at Yokum’s Store to get my camping permit (make sure you arrive during business hours) and drove to the Lower Campgrounds by the river. I couldn’t figure out why I was the only one picking a choice spot by the river. The first night was great. I had a little trail down to the waters edge…

Peaceful campground on a river

We thoroughly enjoyed this campground. Very peaceful, surrounded by mountains. The campground had stables and catered to people with horses, but we felt very welcomed by the owners. The campground was very quiet and is actually very near to what is referred to as"The Quiet Zone." Pocahontas County…

It’s like I had the place to myself

Stopped here spur of the moment to get out of the car and stretch my legs. Sites are close together with no privacy but the were only a few other campers over the 3 days I was there. Beautiful creek and waterfall with sandy beach only a short walk from campground. I stayed on the upper loop and…

Free hot showers and 2pm check out

Typical NFS campground with a decent spacing between large sites. Watched some deer walk thru a few times they didn’t seem fazed by me or my dog. Being from the northeast I was stoked to find hot FREE showers and a 2pm check out time. The lake is man made but very large and looks like it’s always…

Nice campground Scenic railway at campgrounds edge.

Called and got a reservation Aug 1-12th had a slight problem. We called to say we couldn’t make it until the 2nd no problem and no charge, that was nice if him to do so. Nice well kept campground adjacent to the Durbin Rocket steam locomotive. They are doing a train robbery this week, robbers are…

Great overnight stop

We stopped here for a rest on a long trip. Arrived late, had reserved a pull through site with FHU, so we didn’t have to unhitch. Perfect.

Absolutely gorgeous !

This is our favorite campsite and park that we’ve been to in the state of Virginia! We have so many more to explore but Douthat state park is huge the lake is so much fun, and the trails go for miles! We just started camping and hiking and can’t wait to explore more of the country!!

So peaceful!

Really cool spot! The campground hosts were very kind and I could see them cleaning each site after the campers left. Decently private spots with trees/foliage between neighbors. And free showers! Who could ask for more

Make sure you have whatever you need downloaded though, no service at all (and…
