Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area

Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area is located within Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. The camping area consists of pullouts along a dirt road. While it may be difficult to find on some navigation apps, using the specific pinned location will lead you directly to the site. The campground is situated near a river, providing easy access to water. Currently, the road to the camping area is closed for upgrades until spring of 2024.

Stonecoal follows standard dispersed camping protocols within Monongahela National Forest. Camping is free and doesn't require reservations. Sites are first-come, first-served, with camping permitted in designated pullouts along the road where fire pits are established. Pack out all trash and follow Leave No Trace principles. Stay aware that this is a rustic area with minimal oversight, so prepare accordingly. For the most current rules and seasonal closures, check with the Monongahela National Forest office before your trip.

Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area offers very minimal amenities, typical of dispersed camping. There are established fire pits at the pullout sites. The nearby river provides access to water, which should be filtered or treated before use. No toilets, trash services, picnic tables, or other developed facilities are available. The camping area features soft ground suitable for staking tents. The access road is dirt but maintained well enough that even standard passenger vehicles like a Honda Civic can navigate it without issues when the road is open.
