Each site typically features a fire ring, and pets are allowed throughout the camping area without breed restrictions. The primitive campsites require no reservation or permits and remain free for stays up to 14 days. Audra State Park Campground

Beautiful camping sites along the river! This is a small State Park, but packs a punch with some beautiful trails, and direct river access from almost half of the sites. Nice camp store and heated, full bath houses with showers. Note that sites are gravel….so if tenting bring a cot and/or some extra cushioning. Wi fi is available within close range of the camp store. I was at Site #8.

      Hone Quarry

      Surprisingly Awesome

Dispersed camping beyond the actual quarry. A lot of rain occurred in the days prior but on my visit over two days. Bright and sunny. However, it was a lot of road wash out and a lot of standing water as you made your way toward dispersed spots. Apparently, I was the only one there, because they were many, many spots open for camping. Nice pre-visited sites and was able to camp near running stream.

      Dispersed camping at Mower Basin

      Absolutely gorgeous

There are 25 or so established sights at Mower Basin and you're bound to find one with an incredible view of the mountains. Sight 12 took my breath away, but unfortunately as a tent camper the wind pushed us down to the lake sight just passed it. It was close to the road but still felt private. Everyone who passed our sight was very friendly. It's a gorgeous place, and from someone who's never been to Virginia, it was the perfect place to have my first experience. We will probably go back when we are heading back down south.

      Holly River State Park Campground

It's a beautiful, clean place with incredible staff

This review is for the primitive boondockers like myself. It's a very established campground, full amenities, restaurant, gift shop, the works. I thought we would find a primitive campground with much more privacy based on the details and reviews of the grounds. The primitive camping spots are all in view of each other down a long stretch of dirt road. They're very clean and come with trash cans at each sight, which was nice. We were the only tent campers so it was enjoyable, but I don't know if I would have had the same experience if there were a lot of campers. I think that's a very important and left out detail about this location for the people who enjoy a more private environment. I'm still very happy with my stay, and the staff is absolutely WONDERFUL. They're all so kind and went out of their way to provide us with information when we had questions they didn't know the answer to, everyone who works there is a delight. 25$ a night felt a little much to sleep in our tent, but the showers, clean bathrooms, and care put into the property made it worth it. Waterfalls nearby as well. I'd stay again.

      Switzer Lake Dispersed Camping

      8:00pm Arrival

You read that right. All the plans to arrive earlier went out the window and I pulled into the road well after sunset. Able to navigate well enough with recent rainfalls so road was pitted and rocky. Somewhat drove past lake and found pre-utilized spot. Nice ground for set up and plenty of room for vehicle in/egress. The 2:20am howl of the eastern coyote caught me off guard; definitely inside a mile. He traveled because at 2:40am he met his buddies and had a howl-fest in the far distance. By day light I was able to explore and see some great lake sites you would enjoy. Highly recommended. No cell service.

      Gandy Creek Dispersed Camping

      White noise of the creek

Overnight tent camping with my dog. Saw a raccoon in a tree. So private and peaceful. The water and wind at night made for a nice relaxing sleep. Plenty of trails to explore.

    Guide to Glady

The Monongahela National Forest surrounds Glady, West Virginia, with elevations ranging from 2,000 to nearly 5,000 feet above sea level. This region experiences temperatures typically 10-15 degrees cooler than nearby lowlands due to the mountain terrain. Dispersed camping opportunities throughout the area offer primitive sites with varying levels of accessibility depending on seasonal conditions and vehicle type.

    What to do

Fishing access points: At Five River Campground, campers can enjoy direct river access for trout and smallmouth bass. "The river is fantastic and holds trout and smallmouth for those that like to fish," notes a visitor who found the location ideal for combining camping with angling.

Hiking trail networks: Trails at Spruce Knob Lake Campground connect to numerous backcountry routes. One hiker mentioned, "It is an easy drive to many of the local trout streams such as the Gandy, the Glady and Shavers Fork. Many hiking opportunities with excellent birding especially in spring or fall during migration."

Winter stargazing: The lack of light pollution creates exceptional night sky viewing opportunities when weather permits. "Spruce Knob Lake was a great spot for Milky Way star gazing," reports a visitor who appreciated the dark sky conditions during their stay.

    What campers like

Creek swimming spots: Summer visitors appreciate the deeper swimming holes formed along creek beds. At Little River Dispersed Campsites, one camper shared, "When you park and walk down to the river, if you turn right, there's a beach area about 50 yards down that offers a great spot to take a dip!"

Secluded camping areas: The separation between sites creates a sense of privacy even during busier periods. "Little river has about 15 campsites along Little River Road. Most are decent, but a few are absolutely gorgeous," reports a camper who found the locations ideal for solitude.

Wildlife encounters: The forest surrounding Glady supports diverse wildlife viewing opportunities. However, proper food storage is essential, as one camper warned: "We were charged by an extremely aggressive black bear, fortunately with plenty of noise and shouting and slowly backing away we avoided further conflict! But, it was very very close to the site we had our tent!"

    What you should know

Weather variability: Mountain elevations cause significant temperature fluctuations, especially in transitional seasons. A camper at Spruce Knob and Spruce Knob Observation Tower advised, "If you visit in the fall bring long sleeves because it is windy and quite a few degrees cooler then down below."

Road conditions: Access roads to dispersed camping areas require careful navigation. "About 7+ miles in from the town of Durbin on a dirt road (not sure how that would go in an RV but easy in a small vehicle)," reported one visitor describing the route to Little River Dispersed Campsites.

Cell service limitations: Most areas have minimal to no connectivity. "Download your maps before you come, because there's no cell service and you'll truly get away," advised one camper, highlighting the importance of advance preparation.

Water sources: Bring sufficient water or filtration equipment for dispersed sites. While creeks run through many camping areas, one visitor noted, "There's a creek running on the side of the camp, so with a water filter and enough food, you could spend many days here."

    Tips for camping with families

Pet-friendly camping options: Lower Glady Dispersed Campground welcomes pets without restrictions. "Nice camp sites, and good fishing," notes one visitor who enjoyed the pet-friendly environment for a complete family experience.

Established fire rings: Most sites feature permanent fire rings suitable for cooking and evening gatherings. "The campsites are boarded by boulders. The toilet was one of the cleanest I have seen. Most sites have good shade while still open to the sky," reported a family who appreciated the well-maintained facilities.

Arrival timing: Popular sites fill quickly, especially during peak seasons. "We tried to get a spot this weekend and arrived around 430pm on Friday. Every single spot was taken with many people who look like they have been set up there all summer," cautioned one visitor about arrival timing.

    Tips from RVers

RV site selection: Revelle's River Resort offers dedicated RV spaces with full hookups along the riverfront. "My family and I liked this campground a lot. We had a camp site that was right against the river with full hookups," shared one RV camper who appreciated the site placement.

Turning radius requirements: Large rigs face challenges on forest roads with tight turns. "There is a very sharp turn if you come in from the south on Sully Road, which seems to be the primary way to get there. My Subaru Forester didn't have any issues, but if you're driving an RV or have a trailer, you may have a struggle," advised one visitor regarding access to Lower Glady.

Hookup availability: Revelle's River Resort provides complete services for extended stays. "This seemed to be a well laid out campground with sites for weekenders in maybe the best location right along the river and the seasonal campers spread out around," noted an RVer who found the arrangement practical for various camping styles.
