The Best Boat-In Camping Near Brewers Corner, Vermont

Welcome to Bomoseen State Park. The 3,576-acre park is located in the Taconic Mountains on the shores of Lake Bomoseen, the largest lake entirely within Vermont’s borders. The Taconics are the slate-producing region of Vermont, and the area's history parallels the rise and fall of Vermont's slate industry. The park contains several quarry holes and their adjacent colorful slate rubble piles as reminders of this period. These quarries provided slate for the West Castleton Railroad and Slate Company, a complex of 60 to 70 buildings that stood between Glen Lake and Lake Bomoseen. Several slate buildings and foundations remain in the park. A self-guided Slate History Trail leads hikers through remnants of this bygone era.

The campground contains 55 tent/RV sites and 10 lean-tos. Some sites are wooded and some are grassy and open, while others are located along the lakeshore. There are restrooms with flush toilets, hot and cold running water and coin-operated hot showers. There is also an RV sanitary station located at the park.

## Overview

Hapgood Pond Recreation Area and Campground is situated next to its scenic namesake pond, 13 miles east of Manchester, Vermont. Visitors enjoy camping, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and hiking.

## Recreation

The Hapgood Pond is a popular place for non-motorized boating, including canoeing and kayaking. A carry-down launch area is located on the south end of the pond. Fishing and swimming are also favorite activities. Hapgood boasts the Forest's only designated and managed swim beach. A fishing pier is located on the south shore. Hapgood Pond Trail begins in the day-use area and continues almost a mile around the north edge of the pond to the dam. A short spur trail follows a stream and winds through the woods around the pond. Younger visitors love the big play field area within Hapgood, a perfect spot for Frisbee or ball games.

## Facilities

Hapgood Pond Recreation Area offers family campsites and day-use picnic shelters for groups. First come, first served sites are available. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Each family campsite is equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring with grill, parking spur, and a cleared area for a tent. Campsites 9-28 are reservable. Each group picnic shelter can accommodate up to 35 people, and is equipped with a pavilion, picnic tables, and a grill. The two shelters are available for reservations.

## Natural Features

Hapgood Pond Recreation Area is eight acres and is set in a wooded area in the northeastern portion of the Green Mountain National Forest, which encompasses over 400,000 acres in southwestern and central Vermont. Hapgood Pond covers another 12 acres which is perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing. The Green Mountain National Forests includes three nationally designated trails: the Appalachian Trail, the Long Trail, and the Robert Frost National Recreation Trail. The Forest also contains three alpine ski areas, seven Nordic ski areas, and approximately 900 miles of multiple-use trails.

The town of Manchester, Vermont, popular for its shops, restaurants, and other attractions, including the American Museum of Fly Fishing, is a short drive away.

## Overview

Stoughton Pond Recreation Area is a day use area located to the north of North Springfield Lake. Stoughton Pond is located off State Route 106 on Stoughton Pond Road in Perkinsville, Vermont. 

#### Natural Features:

Stoughton Pond is situated among rolling hills on the North Branch of the Black River. Open lawns cover the park, with hardwood and softwood trees offering areas of shade and wildlife habitat. 

#### Recreation:

Stoughton Pond Recreation Area offers plenty of activities for visitors of all ages. Many people enjoy canoeing, kayaking, boating and fishing. The state of Vermont Department of Fish and Game annually stock the pond with rainbow trout, and the pond also offers excellent bass fishing. A boat ramp is available, located off Plains Road.   
  
An interpretive trail winds along the side of the pond. Hikers are treated to views of wetlands and uplands, both with a wide diversity of natural habitats. A multi-use trail system is located at the main reservoir, North Springfield Lake. 

#### Facilities:

Stoughton Pond Recreation Area offers a group picnic shelter with tables and a large grill. Ten family picnic sites are also available on a first-come, first-served basis. Flush toilets, change house and drinking water are available on site.   
  
Amenities at this family-friendly park include a swimming area with a great beach, grassy areas for sun bathing and a boat ramp for small boats, canoes and kayaks.   
  
The park is staffed by uniformed park rangers who offer special programs on a variety of nature topics throughout the season.
