Michigan Brook Road Camping - Green Mtn Ntnl Forest

Michigan Brook Road Camping sits at the end of Upper Michigan Road in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest, where the pavement gives way to a rough service road that challenges most vehicles. The US Forest Service maintains this free dispersed camping area in forested terrain alongside Michigan Brook, with sites scattered both along the access road and closer to the water.

The rough road conditions become a defining feature of the camping experience here. Thomas and James S. warn that "higher clearance would be advised" due to muddy and very rough sections. Winter access requires snowshoes or snowmobiles beyond the plowed parking area, as one reviewer discovered after getting stuck overnight in their car.

Cell phone service remains unavailable at the camping sites, though campers can find signal by walking to the end of Upper Michigan Brook Road where a gas station, post office, and general store provide supplies and connectivity. The dispersed sites offer varying experiences, with some positioned on elevated ground providing more space while others sit closer to the creek. "Few nice ones near the creek," notes one camper, highlighting the water-adjacent options that tend to be most popular.

For those wanting established amenities, Chittenden Brook Campground provides developed facilities less than three miles northwest.

Campers regularly cited nice spots with good space and creek access for exploration. Road access can be challenging with muddy, rough conditions requiring higher clearance vehicles.

Nice area. Lots of spots

I found most of the spots to be on the road before the GPS marker. Few nice ones near the creek. I stayed at one on top of a lots of space at mine.

Michigan Brook

Road goes in pretty far. Some parts are muddy and very rough. Higher clearance would be advised!!!

Out of the way back country car/tent camping

I stayed at this campsite located at the end of upper Michigan road. It is winter and there is a lot of snow. The main road to the parking lot is plowed and sanded. However if you would like to continue down the service road during winter months I would highly recommend snowshoes or a snowmobile. I attempted to bring my car and was stuck overnight but was able to dig myself out the next morning. PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOCATION DOES NOT PROVIDE CELL PHONE SERVICE OR WIFI CONNECTION. However, if you walk to the end of upper Michigan Brook road you will have cell phone service and a gas station along with a United States Post Office as well as a general store which also serves as a restaurant. There you can find just about anything. Gas, firewood, water/drinks and a restroom
