The sound of Chittenden Brook runs through this Green Mountain National Forest campground constantly, a detail multiple reviewers flag before almost anything else. Getting there takes some commitment: a 2.5-mile dirt road with a steady incline leads into the site, and the access is rough enough that campers with larger rigs should think twice. The Forest Service lists an 18-foot RV maximum, and at least one reviewer notes the road would challenge anything but the smallest vehicle.
Sites are well-spaced through forested terrain, with enough distance between them that neighbors are rarely visible. Each site includes a fire pit, tent platform, and picnic table. Vault toilets are on-site and reviewers describe them as well-maintained. There is no running water or electricity, and cell service drops out several miles before the entrance, so downloading maps in advance is worth doing. Bear-proof dumpsters handle trash and recycling at the end of the loop.
The campground sits close to the Long Trail, making it a practical base for day hikes without a long drive to a trailhead. Nearby, Last light on Michigan Brook and Brandon Gap Trailhead Dispersed — Green Mountain NF offer additional options for campers building a multi-stop itinerary through the area. Dogs are welcome, and those looking for pet-friendly camping near Green Mountain National Forest will find this campground a solid fit. At $15 a night, Jessica M. sums it up well: "the constant sound of running water from the brook was truly relaxing." Weekday visits in shoulder season tend to leave the loop nearly empty.
