Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Proctor Lake

Sowell Creek at Proctor Lake offers full hookup sites where pets are permitted throughout the campground with standard leash requirements. The Army Corps of Engineers maintains several pet-friendly campgrounds around the lake, including Promontory and Copperas Creek, both providing access to shorelines where dogs can cool off during hot Texas summers. Sites at these campgrounds feature water and electric hookups suitable for both tent and RV camping, with most areas providing direct access to the water. Campers should watch for stickers in certain grassy areas that can get caught in dogs' paws, particularly at Promontory campground. The park features concrete picnic tables under metal covers at most sites, giving pets and owners shaded areas for relaxation.

The River Bottom campgrounds feature more primitive camping options where pets are welcome, though without the amenities of the Corps sites. Dogs must stay leashed in all camping areas, with no off-leash zones available. Lake Brownwood State Park, located approximately 30 miles west of Proctor Lake, provides additional pet-friendly camping with showers and hookups for longer stays. Nearby RV parks in Stephenville, including Lost Creek RV Park and Green Deer RV Park, accommodate pets with clean facilities and grassy exercise areas. The Green Deer property includes a walking trail just under half a mile long and two large dog areas with ample grass for pets to enjoy. Visitors should pack out pet waste as trash receptacles can fill quickly, especially during busy weekends when the park's dumpsters may overflow.

Coffee Creek RV Resort & Cabins

    Lots of amenities

We had an overnight stop here. Lots of longterm people working in the area, but still lots of open spots. Had an awesome playground, little dog park, laundry, showers, pool, etc. Very cute park.

    Eagle's Nest Village

    Rustic Park

This was a quick pick on our way to Lubbock. The place needs some TLC but we had W, E, and sewer. There ain’t anything in Goldthwaite so BYO. The folks who run the place are helpful and the dog park has the only grass in the park. Rustic

    Eagle's Nest Village

    Serene and beautifully updated park

Great spot for a quick overnight! All hookups worked great, and they're on city water and sewer. The dog park was enormous, and Goldthwaite is a charming town with plenty to do if you look. They have ice, a general store with RV parts, a library, game room, and propane tank refilling. Can't speak highly enough about Greg and Josh, who run the park. Excellent customer service. They said the owners are installing playground equipment and a hot tub soon, so that will make our next trip even better! Best thing was the price. For $35 and electricity and Wi-Fi included, there's not a better value in the county.

    Dinosaur Valley RV Park

    Convenience

My husband and I stayed at Dinosaur Valley RV Park (DVRVP) on two separate occasions in last four weeks. We stayed 1 night during our first time at DVRVP and 2 nights during our second stay.

Here are our pros: 1.) DVRVP shares a property line with DVSP. Guests are able to purchase a day pass online through the DVSP website and access DVSP without ever having to drive through the front entrance. It was a simple 1 minute walk to access the park through DVRVP.

2.) You do not have to enter DVSP to enjoy the Paluxy River. Guests of DVRVP can access the river by following a small trail at one corner of the park by the entrance of DVSP. Our family spent a whole day in the river a minute walk from our camper.

3.) Dinosaur World is across the street.

4.) DVRVP is a family owned and operated business. The service was friendly! We wanted to add a. Additional day. We called and left a message. Moments later we received a return phone call. We were placed on a wait list. A few hours later we received another phone call let us know they were able to add an additional day to our visit.

5.) The sites are pull in and leveled for the most part. Both sites we stayed at were clean, free of trash and pet waste. The fire pits had been cleaned out. Connections are conveniently placed on driver side and we’re cleaned.

6.) DVRVP staff hosts several family friendly activities for guests throughout the day, everyday.

7.) DVRVP has a playground, swimming pool, hot tub, fire pit and plenty of green space for kids to roam and explore.

    8.) Pet Friendly!

9.) No RV age restrictions! We saw old to new class A’s to C’s and towable’s.

    Here are our cons:

1.) 2 pet limit per site. We would love to bring all three of our dogs. One is tiny and is an incident dog.

    Dinosaur Valley State Park Campground

Kid Friendly Swimming Hole - Educational, too!

This is a great place to bring kids. There is an on-site store, as well as galleries that talk about what it was like when dinosaurs roamed N Texas. The tracks don’t disappoint! There is also a great swimming spot at the first track site.

The drive-in campgrounds aren’t very private... and the tails around the campground make it easy for people to walk through your site. Something to keep in mind if you camp with your pets, or want privacy.

    Edwin King Atwood Park

    Great primitive beach camping

South Padre Island Beach has approximately 60 miles of primitive beach camping. This area can be accessed from Beach Access #5 and Beach Access #6 and you can camp anywhere north. During the on season access by vehicle is $12 to enter, regardless of the length of stay, though camping cannot exceed 14 days. Offseason is free (from autumn until spring break). During the off season north of access 6 is recommended 4x4 only. Fires, pets, and fishing are allowed, but keep in mind several miles of beach have a road on the other wide of the dunes so keep an eye on pets and children. There are also no amenities and it is recommended to be aware of tides and weather conditions as it can get quite windy on the beach.
