Proctor Lake offers Corps of Engineers managed campgrounds with varying levels of amenities for both tent and RV camping. Located in central Texas about 100 miles southwest of Fort Worth, the lake spans approximately 4,600 surface acres when at normal levels. Water levels can fluctuate seasonally, affecting both fishing and boat ramp access at certain campgrounds.
What to do
Fishing from docks: Sowell Creek provides dedicated fishing areas with consistent catches. "Sowell is a great family friendly campground. Well kept, with an easy access boat ramp. Highly recommended," notes a camper at Sowell Creek at Proctor Lake.
Swimming at designated areas: During summer months, several campgrounds maintain swimming areas separate from boat traffic. At Promontory, one camper shared it was "beautiful and quiet a little hike to the water but it was a beautiful site well maintained but watch out for spider they web so fast lol."
Boat recreation: The lake features multiple access points with protected areas for launching. At Promontory, "Nice open area for camping...protected boat ramp and can park boat near some camp sites."
What campers like
Peaceful atmosphere: Weekday visits typically offer more seclusion. "We loved our stay at Copperas Creek, so quiet and peaceful. During the week we were one of two trailers in our area," describes one visitor at Copperas Creek at Proctor Lake.
Lake views: Many sites provide direct sightlines to the water. "The lake views are amazing. It's quiet and calm. Mostly. Sites r clean and well maintained," reports a Sowell Creek camper.
Nearby attractions: The surrounding communities offer additional activities within short driving distance. "Downtown Comanche nearby has some neat places to stop(sorrells farm, stone eagle beer garden, Brennan vineyards, soda shop, & farmers market) Dublin nearby has Dublin bottling works, Lucky Vines Vineyard & Veldhuizen Cheese."
What you should know
Water quality concerns: Some campers report issues with water odor at hookup sites. "Water had a terrible smell," noted one Copperas Creek visitor, while others mentioned similar concerns at different Proctor Lake campgrounds.
Seasonal considerations: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, making shade crucial. "This park is so quiet and relaxing. Sites 1-7 are full hookups and BRF except site 2 (low hanging tree). We were in site 6 and it was perfect," shared a visitor at Sowell Creek.
Limited cell service: Coverage varies by carrier and campground location. A Copperas Creek camper reported "Absolutely NO Verizon but three bars AT&T" at their site.
Tips for camping with families
Site selection for shade: Choose campsites with established trees for summer relief. "Sites 11-14 are in the shade and right on the water!" noted a camper at Copperas Creek.
Alternatives for day trips: Consider exploring nearby state parks for additional activities. Dinosaur Valley State Park Campground offers unique experiences about 90 minutes from Proctor Lake. "This place is awesome. One of the best natural swimming holes I've found near DFW. There are dinosaur fossils everywhere. hiking is great, and even on a hot summer day you can go swim in the river or the blue hole."
Wildlife awareness: Be prepared for insects, particularly after rainfall. At Promontory, one camper advised "beautiful views, awesome people but, prepare for white flies an prickers."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling requirements: Most RV sites have concrete pads for wheel placement. "Concrete treads where RV wheels land were level requiring no additional leveling efforts," noted one camper about Copperas Creek campgrounds.
Full hookup availability: Identify which loops offer complete services. At Lost Creek RV Park in nearby Stephenville, visitors appreciate the "Beautiful RV park. Not the kind of place you would want to stay if you're looking to get away from it all as it's right in town, but super convenient if your looking for a place to stop for a night or two in a park that's safe and well maintained. Has hook ups and a water house."
Camp host assistance: Staff availability varies by season and campground. "The park rangers are wonderful and so kind and helpful," according to one Copperas Creek visitor, while another noted "The lady working the gate should have her picture in the dictionary under customer service. Very pleasant & welcoming!"
