Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Galveston, TX

Dellanera RV Park offers direct access to a pet-friendly beach area along the Galveston coastline, with concrete pads, full hookups, and designated pet relief areas with waste bags throughout the property. Stella Mare RV Resort features both small and large dog park areas where pets can enjoy off-leash time, plus dog waste stations to maintain the clean environment that guests consistently mention in reviews. ['Campground data and reviews near Galveston, Texas is regularly updated on The Dyrt.'] Both parks maintain strict leash requirements outside of designated areas. Pet owners appreciate the private beach access at Dellanera, where dogs can walk along the shoreline away from vehicle traffic. Bolivar Flats Dispersed Camping and Follett's Island Beach provide free camping options for those traveling with pets, though these areas lack amenities like running water and hookups.

Beachfront campgrounds provide cooling Gulf breezes for pets during hot summer months, though the constant salt air requires more frequent cleaning of pet fur and camping equipment. Most sites restrict pets to a maximum of two per campsite with documentation of current vaccinations required at check-in. The Galveston Island KOA Holiday maintains pet-friendly cabins in addition to RV and tent sites, allowing owners to keep pets indoors during extreme weather. Campers report the park is quiet even when crowded, making it suitable for pets sensitive to noise. Sites along the perimeter at Stella Mare offer more privacy for campers with active dogs. Nearby veterinary services are available in Galveston proper, approximately 15-20 minutes from most campgrounds, with emergency services available at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists.

    Bolivar Peninsula RV Park

    Still needs work

Pros: office lady very nice, site 1 has 1 tree for shade, ferry w/ our travel trailer from Galveston Island was easier than expected, large dog park, close to Camp Margaritaville.

Cons: gravel sites, bathroom super gross with no TP, dirt rv road kicks up lots of dust, right on noisy highway.

    Bay RV Park

Bay RV Park is a great place to stay!

We are family owned and we offer a quiet, relaxing atmosphere.  Bay RV Park is just two blocks away from Galveston Bay.  We have huge, Texas-size sites with full hook-ups (20, 30 and 50 amp) and we also offer easy park pull-through sites.  Sites and streets are concrete and our park also has lots of grass and trees.  Our friendly staff is ready to make you feel right at home!

    Jamaica Beach RV Resort

Very cool features that aren't well-maintained

Our site is good, just the right size. The location is a little far from galveston and the town area is a little small.

The splash pad is cool but aged. The pools are really neat but the water cleanliness is subpar. All the pools need vacuuming with sand and dirt on the bottom. The infinity spa pool was cloudy. The other pools didn't feel quite right.

The lazy river was very fun and enjoyed that.

Houston / Med Center KOA Holiday

Great rv campground close to airport

Great campground with wonderful staff who are very friendly. Full hookup, paved sites with heated saltwater pool and hot tub, workout facilities, clubhouse with games and puzzles, laundry facilities, a small camp store, and pet friendly with two small dog parks. The best thing about the location is that it backs up to Tom Bass park that has wonderful dog parks along with playgrounds and frisbee golf. Would definitely be staying here again!

    Follett’s Island Beach

    Reggie’s first beach

Fabulous night’s sleep and morning swim and cup of joe! The stars were excellent at night and the sea breeze made for amazing sleeping weather. The morning brought warm sun which allowed for a pleasant frolic in the ocean after waking.

Plenty of space for privacy, very quiet. Sand is very packed and we had no trouble getting in and out. $2 toll if coming from Galveston, so if you come in from the west, this can be avoided.

    Bolivar Flats Dispersed Camping

    AMAZING

This place is EXCELLENT! From Galveston take the ferry across it's really convenient and free! We took our 26ft Class C RV on the ferry no problem. Pick a spot of the beach and just set up camp! The sand is very compacted and easily drivable. We saw all types of vehicles from golf carts to massive class A rigs.

When we were there is was not busy and there are only a few other campers. People come and go to use the beach to fish or play and cars will occasionally pass by your camp but it it not bad because you are literally yards from the water!

There are garbage cans set up up and down the beach which is miles long.

Bring water and pack out as much as you can and try not to fill up the garbage can you may be next to because there is quite a bit of litter on the beach. We picked up liter daily when we stayed. Mostly old garbage that has washed up from the ocean. Very peaceful and relaxing place to stay and will definitely be coming back here.

There are no bathrooms so you’ll need to be self contained. Good cell reception with ATT and Verizon

Guide to Galveston

Seasonal camping conditions vary significantly at beaches near Galveston, Texas. The island's 32-mile stretch of Gulf Coast shoreline experiences summer temperatures averaging 90°F with high humidity, while winter lows typically range from 45-60°F. Weather patterns shift rapidly along this coastal area, with afternoon thunderstorms common during summer months and fog frequently rolling in during winter mornings.

What to do

Beach fishing opportunities: At San Luis Pass County Park, campers can fish without requiring a boat. "This is a nice place if you want to fish. No boat needed. They have a lighted fishing path, boat docks and launches," notes Jeannette V. The park offers both beach and bay fishing access points.

Kayaking on protected waters: The bay side at Galveston Island KOA Holiday provides ideal conditions for paddling without Gulf waves. "We enjoy the lazy river, putt, putt, and kayaking on the bay. It is an easy walk to the beach," reports D. Scott W. Morning hours offer calmer conditions before afternoon winds increase.

Wildlife observation: Bolivar Flats serves as a significant shorebird sanctuary where camping puts you in proximity to diverse coastal species. "Adjacent to a preserve. Excellent," notes Jay K. Early mornings provide optimal birdwatching as many species feed along the tideline at dawn.

What campers like

Proximity to multiple water features: Galveston Island State Park Campground provides access to both Gulf and bay environments. "During the day we took our inflatable boat out on the bay, went fishing (no license needed at a state park) and went to the Oceanside beach," shares Ashley C. The park features distinct camping areas on both the bay and beach sides.

Family-oriented water amenities: Jamaica Beach RV Resort offers multiple water-based recreation facilities. "2 hot tubs, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor, 2 pools, 1 lazy river (so relaxing), 1 miniature golf course, 1 duck pond, 1 outdoor movie screen, 1 Pavillion with grills, and an awesome splash pad for the kids," details Elisha L. The resort maintains scheduled activities throughout peak season.

Direct beach access for vehicles: Free dispersed camping at Follett's Island Beach allows camping directly on the sand. "Very easy to access regardless of car type you have, won't get stuck in sand. This is a 13 mile Long Beach, so amenities may be far and few," explains Mitchell M. The beach sand is firm enough for most vehicles, though some access points have softer areas.

What you should know

Seasonal insect activity: Be prepared for mosquitoes and biting flies depending on season and wind conditions. "The only downside? The mosquitoes!! Right at dusk they attacked with a vengenge. Be prepared for that!" warns Ashley C. about Galveston Island State Park. Another camper at Follett's Island notes, "Only gave 4 stars because of the biting flies... They were swarming our dog."

Weather variations: Coastal camping comes with rapid weather changes. "We had a storm with 70 mile an hour winds and heavy rain. Got alerts on my phone," reports a camper at Bolivar Flats. "Wind was blowing around 30mph from the south so the waves were amazing to listen and watch," shares Pam H.

Salt air effects: The constant salt spray impacts equipment and comfort. "Cons...you have to be aware a large rv might have a challenge navigating interior roads & parking when the park is busy," notes Jana about San Luis Pass County Park. Another reviewer mentioned, "your car and camper get covered in a salty residue" at coastal sites.

Tips for camping with families

Resort-style options: Sandpiper RV Resort offers family-friendly amenities within walking distance to beach access. "Easy walking distance to the beach and short drive to Galveston attractions. Pool and hot tub were a hit with the kids," reports Brendan S. The resort maintains concrete pads suitable for both RVs and outdoor family gatherings.

Scheduled activities: Jamaica Beach RV Resort maintains a regular calendar of family events. "They have plenty of activities for the kids. Putt putt and movie night," shares Jay W. Activities are typically scheduled Thursday through Sunday during peak season.

Educational opportunities: Galveston Island State Park offers ranger-led programs focusing on coastal ecosystems. "This state park is pristine and has lots of nature activities for all ages. We've been going GISP for decades," notes Angela H. Programs include guided beach walks and bay exploration activities.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: At Stella Mare RV Resort, position matters for comfort. "The sites are level and easy to back in to. Everyone was quiet, no loud music," notes a reviewer. "The perimeter sites are smaller than the pull through, but are more private," advises April Y.

Beach access logistics: For RVers at Dellanera RV Park, beach proximity means managing sand. "Full hookups with level concrete pads. Enough space between for a picnic table. Best part is the Galveston beach right down the wooden, ramped, walkway," explains Craig F. The park offers direct beach access without requiring vehicle movement.

Utilities and services: RV campgrounds near Galveston vary in hookup quality and availability. "Sites are concrete, level, with a very nice shelter. We stayed on the beach side and easy access to the beach from pretty much any site," reports Jim P. about Galveston Island State Park. "We camped here over New Years. The RV circle doesn't have a bathroom, so we had to drive over to the tent circle each time, but those bathrooms and showers are really nice," notes Julie B.
