    Vampire mosquitos

Listening to the ocean waves is relaxing enough. I can hang out here for a week. Is green and spacious. The beach is few hundred feet away. There’s power and water. The site is level. Is sooo nice. Once the sun goes down. An army of vampire mosquitos descend on you and your pets. We were enjoying being outside and we had to get into our trailer. Spent a while killing them. Good thing we had walked the dogs. In the trailer the vampire mosquitos would be sucking on you as you killed them. They would be on you all over. Once sunrise came. They were gone. Even with a breeze they came.

    White Oak Parish Park Campground

    This place needs 10 stars!

We couldn’t believe that this place is only $12 after we arrived! It is as nice as any experience campground we’ve stayed at! It has 8 pull through sites. Each site has electricity and water. They each have a fire ring, barbecue, garbage can and picnic table. Each site has a nice lawn and there are trees that provide shade. The tent area is tuck off next to the tree line and they have fire rings and barbecue pits as well. It has clean bathrooms and showers and it has a dump station. They have a huge picnic area along with a great park for kids. They provide a dog station with poop bags and trash. This is situated right on the river and is only a short walk for some amazing views. The campground was quiet and clean I would imagine it would be hard to get a spot here during the busy season! Early morning fisherman do come by the camp on their way to the boat launch but the noise didn’t bother us. This is truly a gem of Louisiana and one you should definitely take the time to discover.

    Rutherford Beach Dispersed Camping

Great free camping right on the beach

We were able to camp in our camper van right on the beach, the sand is very hard packed, so we had no trouble even in our two-wheel drive.

Unfortunately the bacteria was so high, so you are not able to swim, but the beach itself was really wide and had a lot of seashells to peruse. It is also very dog friendly, and my dog really enjoyed romping around in the sand as we did our long walks.

There are four porta potty is near the entrance, which is nice that a dispersed place has some facilities. There is also a water spigot with a hose for Philips.

So far there's a couple of other camps at the beach, but it is big enough that there is probably 50 yd between each person, which is really nice. I stayed Sunday to Wednesday, so I don't know if it gets busier during the weekends. But through the week, it seems fairy chill

    The Mosquito Coast

The Mosquito Coast Dec 2022•  We had RV campground reservations for 3 nights but left after one because of the mosquitoes. I had read reviews and came prepared with Thermacell repellent and DEET spray but were overwhelmed by the mosquitoes. My Labrador had mosquitoes swarming him. The campground and park is surrounded by a marsh. The mosquitoes are not bad on the beach where there is a breeze. The park rangers are very nice and the campground itself is nice with spacious flat spots with electric and water hook ups. A dump station is available. Verizon coverage is poor. About half the RV spots were used however I only saw one other camper outside of their RV while we were there. I guess everyone else stayed inside their RV because of the mosquitoes. If you are a first time beach camper to the Texas Gulf Coast, try boondocking on the beach here or further down the Bolivar Peninsula near Crystal Beach. You need to be away from the marsh where the breeze keeps the mosquitoes away.

    Village Creek State Park Campground

    Lots to Do

Getting to the park can be difficult if you are arriving after the sun goes down. Once you get off the interstate there is construction going on, there was an exit sign that was not an exit at all. I was very lucky that I did not crash! Texas State Parks charge an entrance fee even when you are camping. However, the do offer several Park Passes that are FREE or a small charge for Seniors, Disabled persons, Veterans and Gold Star Family members. I now have a lifetime pass as a Disabled Veteran and they refunded the entrance fee that I paid when I made the reservation.

The campground is not big but all sites have water and electric with a dump station. Some of the sites are elevated so if you are tent camping you have to haul up your stuff. The site I had needed more that the 50' electric cord that I usually use. Luckly I had another cord so I could get electric to tent. Had to use bungee cords and duck tape to stake the tent cement under the gravel again. The bathhouse is clean and has hot showers. There are alot of water activities nice hiking trails.

Guide to Orange

Cabin camping options near Orange, Texas provide access to both wooded settings and coastal areas with elevations ranging from sea level to 46 feet. The region experiences high humidity year-round with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from May through September. Most campgrounds in the area feature concrete pads for RVs and cabins set among pine trees native to the Southeast Texas coastal plain.

What to do

Kayaking Village Creek: Village Creek State Park Campground offers paddling opportunities on calm waters. "The nature trail over the marsh was really cool, we saw lots of alligators and birds," notes one visitor who appreciated wildlife viewing from the water trail system. Park rangers provide detailed kayak route maps with difficulty ratings.

Beach activities: At Sea Rim State Park Campground, campers can access Gulf Coast beaches for swimming and shell collecting. "The beach was ok, not the nicest I've ever seen but the kids loved it. Lots of shells and treasures to be found. And very few other people around," reports a visitor who enjoyed the uncrowded shoreline.

Fishing opportunities: Concrete fishing areas and stocked lakes provide good angling conditions at several parks. "Private stocked lake. Very nice and attentive staff and park is clean and well maintained," notes a Boomtown USA RV Resort visitor who found the fishing productive during spring months.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Boomtown USA RV Resort maintains well-kept amenities that receive positive feedback. "Amenities very well maintained. They even have a gym! Camp sites are paved with either pull-through or back up," writes a camper who appreciated the security features at the gated property.

Animal encounters: Snow White Sanctuary offers unique wildlife viewing opportunities beyond traditional camping. "Very interesting menagerie of rescue and domestic animals roam the picturesque property beside a pond and woodlands. Night critters sing with enthusiasm," reports a visitor who enjoyed the sanctuary's rescue mission.

Spacious campsites: Level, concrete sites with adequate spacing between neighbors ranks high with campers. "The sites are very close together for a state park. No trees or privacy between several of them. Our space #12 was level," notes a Village Creek State Park camper who found the grounds well-maintained despite site proximity.

What you should know

Mosquito preparation: Bug protection ranks as essential equipment for this region, especially near coastal areas. "An army of vampire mosquitos descend on you and your pets. We were enjoying being outside and we had to get into our trailer," warns a Sea Rim State Park Campground visitor who experienced severe evening insect activity.

Gate closure policies: Some parks enforce strict access hours that prevent late arrivals. "This is the only park that I've encountered that literally locks their gate at night. The time listed on google or their website is a hard closing time. There is no way in, no way out until the next morning," cautions a camper who could not enter after hours.

Construction impacts: Highway construction affects navigation to certain parks, requiring advance route planning. "Getting to the park can be difficult if you are arriving after the sun goes down. Once you get off the interstate there is construction going on, there was an exit sign that was not an exit at all," explains a camper who faced challenging night arrival conditions.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: Vinton RV Park provides recreational facilities for children during hot months. "Vinton RV Park is fantastic! The spacious concrete pads made parking easy, and the full hookups were a big plus. We enjoyed the refreshing pool and the fun rec and game rooms," notes a family who utilized the climate-controlled indoor spaces.

Dog friendly campgrounds near Orange: Multiple parks accommodate pets with designated exercise areas. "My family and I love staying here! The park itself is quiet and you have plenty of space to park. The staff is super friendly and helpful," comments a visitor at Vinton RV Park who traveled with family pets.

Beach accessibility: Shore access points with boardwalks make beach visits easier with children and gear. "The sites were very close to the boardwalk that takes you over the dunes and to the beach," explains a camper who appreciated the convenient beach access at Sea Rim despite the presence of mosquitoes.

Tips from RVers

Hookup configurations: Gulf Coast RV Resort provides practical amenities for extended stays. "All concrete pads with FHU. Long pull throughs some even long enough for 45' motorhome and tow. Mine 50 Amp and 65' pull through," reports an RVer who found the site dimensions accommodated large rigs.

Pad elevations: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Orange feature uneven pad designs affecting leveling and sewer connections. "The pad is buried into the ground which cause hills into the grass. A great way to break an ankle. It also caused a hill for the sewer hose to run uphill," notes a Gulf Coast RV Resort visitor describing drainage challenges.

Electric cord length: Some sites require longer-than-standard power cords for tent campers using electricity. "The site I had needed more that the 50' electric cord that I usually use. Luckly I had another cord so I could get electric to tent," advises a Village Creek State Park camper who needed additional equipment.
