Why did we decide to build an animal adventure park? We were both divorced, single parents and struggled financially when we met in 2009. It was difficult raising a blended family of seven, especially when it came to finding activities that could be accommodated on a very limited budget. You can learn more about our personal journey on our website, but to keep it short here, we wanted to create a family friendly experience that remains affordable and provides educational opportunity for visitors of all ages. (We did the farming/homesteading for Dummies for you).

*We are a wife/husband team and there is a lot of work for two when we need 10 employees. So, there are storm damaged trees or limbs from logged trees (we operate our own sawmill) and burn holes here and there. As one young recent guest remarked to his dad, this is a REAL farm the animals can come right up to you, and it smells like POOP!

    Great Place

This is a newer RV “resort” that is still growing. The pool isn’t open yet but will be very nice when it is. There is a pavilion for large gatherings, a camp store, and laundry on site. The roads and pads are all concrete with full hookups. The park is well maintained, aesthetically pleasing, and everyone is very nice. Give this place a try if you’re nearby.

Great to fish and hang out with friends

A large array of tent campsites and RV hookups as well as a decent sized lake makes this a great spot. There are a few hiking trails however no really spectacular views. The lake allows motor boats

    Summer spot

Lots of clean campsites with improved fire rings and concrete tables. There are full RV hookups and covered awnings at sites. There are plenty of showers, both pit and modern toilets, shared bathrooms, and private bathrooms. There are everal Beach areas with sand and awnings, covered playgrounds, and boat ramps. This is a pretty popular campground, so if you're looking for isolated this is probably not your spot. Bring bug spray, buy your firewood in Corsicana or Waco as there isn't any wood in Dawson. You can collect deadfall to burn.

Awesome long term spot. Has a concrete RV pad that you can park your camper on or park beside it and use the very long pad as your patio, which is what we did. Management very responsive to needs and any questions you may have. This spot is on a very quiet area with minimal boat traffic. We had one camper behind us and they were super quiet. Super nice. Laundry at the office for reasonable price to use the washers and dryers.

    Peaceful place

We tent camped in a primitive spot #47. Overall the spot was nice but not very level making the best placement of our large tent a bit of a challenge. Vault toilets were clean and had hand sanitizer. The nature and hiking in this park was our favorite part. Even rented a canoe and paddled across the lake to the river. Park staff were friendly and helpful. Some primitive tent sites are right on the edge of the lake and after a big rain were very swampy. I believe all sites had partial shade and some have more privacy than others. We did spot some full hook up sites in the RV section that have good space for a tent set up and we may try that next time cause we definitely will be back.

    No tents on weekends

My husband and I went to this site to scope it out for a weekend family camping trip. We drove all over the park and could not find a designated area for tents. We finally stopped at the restaurant/convenient store/bait shop and asked where are the tent sites. He asked when we wanted to stay and we gave him the dates. He then informed us they do not allow tents during the weekend. Some customers there recommended a different park.

This is a RV park. There is no tent sites. From what we could see a lot of the RVs live at the park. It doesn’t look like a camping site of any sort. It looks more like a trailer park. We were greatly disappointed.

    Great little lake

This is a great little lake and campground, especially for fishing and boating. The campground offers nice, secluded campsites with full hook-ups. They each have a table & fire pit. The campsites are clean and well maintained. There are several fishing piers and boat loading docks. The lake is clean and great for tubing, standup paddle boarding or just swimming. There is also a roped off designated swimming area with a small beach. The campground is usually not crowded except for big summer holidays. Lots of wildlife like deer, etc. The public restroom & showers are clean and well kept. There also is a dumping station and a park host is on duty 24 hours a day. No hiking though but walking around the lake is really enjoyable. Bring your own water crafts because there isn’t any rentals offered here. Very low key & enjoyable.

    Salmon Lake Park & Resort

    Underrated & unique family fun!

We have camped at Salmon Lake many times. It is a favorite of the kiddos. The original owner was a house mover, so there are all kinds of old "western town" type setups..old jail, old barber shop, tons of old cars etc. It is fun just to walk around and look at them all. On some visits there is a train ride that runs, but not always. Some of the buildings are cabin rentals. We have never rented a cabin, only done RV camping, but the cabins look so neat!!

There is a playground by the lake and The lake is gorgeous and the kids like to swim in it. It has a giant slide for them and a swimming dock in the middle. It is like a step back in time to the simpler days, very no frills camping. We have brought dirt bikes and small atv before. Owners are ok if you bring them, just be respectful and don't tear anything up. The owners are great hosts and super nice.

All the spots are different (there are 100s of spots...they don't reserve spots. you just get there and then go pick one.)  There is a wooded section of sites behind the lake, but have never camped in that area. We usually pick a spot in the field near the big fire pit or tree. Most sites do not have fire pits or tables, but we usually find one near a fire pit or table with no problems. Be sure to check the sites before you unhook...some have full hookups, some have sketchy looking electric, but we just check everything before unhooking and use a surge protector.  We always look for full hookup sites and have never had a problem finding one way away from other campers. 10/10 one of our favorite campsites and a seriously underrated spot. We always say it feels like going back to a summer camp in the 70s-80s (in the best kind of way!!)

    Diamond in the Rough

The new owners are going all out to make this a family friendly RV park/campground/marina. Only having it for 14 months, you can see the improvements made. There is a store on site for all your needs, that includes wine from the owners own winery. There a a grill also on sight. The campground is gravel pad sites that are mostly level (try site3). They have cabins if you don’t have a RV. Very friendly and eager to make your stay wonderful.

Our visit was a week before Christmas and the decorations were up and beautiful. Give them a try, as we give them a recommendation.

Great and beautiful RV park located right on Lake Athens. Very helpful office staff. I don’t have anything negative to say. All the amenities you may need are available. One of my favorite Texas State Parks!

On our spring 2017 RV adventure we spent two nights RV camping at Fairfield Lake State Park. Fairfield Lake State Park is such a beautiful place to camp, fish and swim. We realy enjoy this stunning park! The campground at Fairfield Lake State Park is heavily treed and very well shaded. Thanks to being located on a power plant lake Fairfield Lake State Park has great fishing! Stocked with Red Drum, Bass, catfish and even Blue Tilapia there is a fish for everyone! Fairfield Lake State Park is one of my favorite Texas State Parks! You will not regret spending any amount of time visiting Fairfield Lake State Park.

I have several videos of this great park on my YouTube ....DudeRV.com

    Wonderful Experience

We have really enjoyed our time here at Texan RV Park while attending the RV Fundamentals Course at the NRVTA. The manager, Betty made herself available to assist with any problem 24/7. The park itself is immaculate. There are 2 ponds, cabins, a clubhouse laundry, beautiful showers. There are food trucks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Activities nearly everyday. Everyone that stays here is attending a class, so everyone visits with each other. I really really like it here.

    Liberty Hill Park Campground

Really Nice Campground, BUT my God the ants!

Liberty hill is a very beautiful campground but there is a serius issue with the invasive Argentian ant. This is a great campground to spend a few days or weeks relaxing and catching fish. Lake Navarro Mills is well know as the best Crappie fishing lake in Texas. Navarro Mills Liberty Hill Park features a fantastic fishing barge that is covered allowing you to fish no matter the weather. Our visit to Liberty Hill Park at Navarro Mills Lake was a real treat with one minor exception, Argentine Ants, these can be a real issue when RV camping at Liberty Hill Park as this invasive species is out of control at Liberty Hill Park. Bonus Point for Helpfulness

While "resort" is a misnomer, this is a nice fisherman campground. Our site was a grass pad, full hookup and directly next to the store and parking lot. The lot was very muddy and full of boats for a tournament which made some early noisiness that you would not typically hear so early otherwise. The sites close to the store have a nice boardwalk behind them, and the staff was so helpful. This was our very first outing ever in an RV and it was a nice weekend. BE CAREFUL around the curve! It's tight and they have an unfortunately colored post that is the same color as the grass, so hard to see.

Nice little water park & full hookups!

There were some drawbacks to the sites, but the water area made it all worth it for us and our toddler! He had a BLAST. Nice clean gravel sites, though a little sandy & not a ton of shade. Full hookups, bath house, and a very nice little water park. They sell affordable food at the water area, though you’re not allowed to bring food in the water area. Super friendly owners. Family owned.

    Best of the three!

There are three VOE Parks on Lake Navarrow Mills and in my personal opnion Wolf Creek Park is the best. We camped here all the time when I was a kid. Navarrow Mills is a fantastic fishing lake. Tons of Crappie and catfish. The facilities are what you would expect from a COE park. Concrete table farily level sites and best of all easy water access.

    Great Place to Camp!

We LOVED our stay at Salmon Lake! We have been here a few times. The staff is amazing, the prices are great and include full hookups and the campground is one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. There is an old west town, cabins, a ton of space to explore, some neat photo ops and a great swimming hole with a sand bottom. We were told that we were welcome to spread out and take up 2 spaces. The place was built in the 80’s for festivals so the new owners are working on a lot of upgrades. The new bathhouse is really nice. We love that we can camp in the woods or under the stars- there are a lot of options. We were also really happy when it rained and due to the sandy soil, the water drained quickly and we didn’t have to deal with mud holes that evening. If you’re into old school camping- this is your place!!

    Salmon Lake Park & Resort

    Disappointed

Salmon lake campground is a mixture between an off the beaten path campground and a destination style park. The campground is fairly large and has numerous old buildings and vehicles to look at as well as a lake to swim and play. At this campground there is a stage for them to host music type festivals, so the campsite layout makes sense to maximize getting as many RVs on the property as possible. The campsites were established in their open fields of grass, are very tight and far from level. The building that originally attracted us to the park are now dilapidated and unsightly. There is a vast difference between vintage/rustic and dumpy/neglected.

The folks that run the place seem to be very nice and check in was fairly simple. There are no reservations available for a specific sites and the vast majority of campsites are 30 amp. I spent a considerable amount of time driving around the park trying to locate a campsite that has 50 amp service. Very few sites have any amenities such as campfire rings or tables. You pay for a section of grass (with hook ups) to park your rig on and that’s about it. The water is also heavily sulphuric which isn’t a bad thing, it was just a shock.

Lastly, the majority of roads are compacted sandy, dirt mixture making it a little dicey to travel in a heavy rig. We had a nice visit but the campground wasn’t for us.

    Camping with llamas

This is a private campsite where you can feed and camp with llamas. There are about 40 llamas to enjoy. The owners are friendly and helpful. There are a couple outhouses, picnic tables, fire pits and grills. There are no electric or water hookups. There is limited camping spots but you are spread out from others which is nice. We were the only ones there when we camped. You book this location through their Facebook page llamaland Ranch. The price was $35 a night plus service fees of around $7.75. Firewood is available for a fee also.

Fairfield is relatively easy to get to being only about 2 hours outside of DFW. Well shaded with large trees for hammocks, plenty of hiking and wildlife. It also has some amazing stargazing. While it isn't the darkest sky, you can see the Milky Way on a clear night.

COE Navarro Mills Reservoir Oak Park

    Clean-up on Site #11

    Pros

    Discount with National Park pass

    Shady

    Quiet

    Dark sky friendly

Nice metal roof cover over concrete picnic table

Saw park ranger drive thru during daylight

    2 bars T-MOBILE

Successful streaming with T-MOBILE hotspot device

    Cons

So day #2 without any TP in men’s restroom.  Went to front gate to report it and was told they would call it into the Army Corps of Engineers as gate volunteers have no stock of TP on hand.  Never saw any TP before leaving on third day

Toilet facility #1 women’s had raw sewage throughout deep enough to cover your foot. Site 11 has electrical hook up at rear on the door side of the camper

Site 11 water connection is centered at the rear of the parking pad.

    Site 11 unlevel.

Numerous piles of charcoal ash throughout site 11 campsite not in the fire pit.

Concrete picnic table needs degreased as surface has lots of large greasy stain

Site numbers are painted on the concrete picnic table so extremely difficult to see in the dark.

    No WIFI
