Campgrounds near Smyrna, Tennessee range from basic tent sites to full-service RV resorts along J. Percy Priest Lake and surrounding waterways. Nashville I-24 Campground, located in Smyrna proper, offers cabin, tent and RV camping with full hookups and is open year-round. Several Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds, including Poole Knobs just 7 miles northeast of Smyrna, provide more natural settings with waterfront access. Most established campgrounds in the area feature mixed-use camping areas that accommodate both tent and RV campers, with varying levels of amenities from primitive to resort-style facilities.

The camping season for many sites runs approximately April through October, with a few locations like Nashville I-24 Campground and Nashville KOA Resort remaining open year-round. Water-based campgrounds managed by the Corps of Engineers typically close during winter months. "Great, spacious sites with concrete or wood picnic tables, fire pits and grills. Fairly level sites. Clean and well maintained. Only downside is limited bathroom and shower facilities (a long trek, uphill)," noted one visitor about Poole Knobs. Most waterfront campgrounds feature a mix of primitive sites and sites with water and electric hookups, though availability can be limited during peak summer weekends. Reservations are recommended, especially for weekend camping during summer months when lake activities are popular.

Waterfront camping sites receive consistently positive reviews, particularly at Poole Knobs and Anderson Road campgrounds along Percy Priest Lake. One camper shared: "Absolutely loved waking up next to the water. Great location and super clean. Lots of shade and privacy." Several visitors mentioned shoreline views and water access as key highlights of their camping experience. Many campgrounds in the region strike a balance between natural settings and proximity to urban conveniences, with most sites being within 30 minutes of Nashville and even closer to shopping and dining in Smyrna or Murfreesboro. While RV-focused campgrounds tend to have more developed amenities like laundry facilities and camp stores, they often feature more closely spaced sites compared to the Corps of Engineers campgrounds, which typically offer greater privacy and natural surroundings.

A Big-Rig-Friendly COE Worth Returning To

We stayed here overnight on the way to Gatlinburg and three nights on the way back. GPS and signage was good as getting to this COE was easy. Often you don’t know what you’re going to get at a COE i.e. tight roads, low hanging branches etc. This was not the case as the campground (CG) is big rig friendly. For the overnighter, we checked in at the gate and proceeded to back in site 50 with water and electric (50/30/20 AMP). We had no problem backing into site 50 which sits above the creek that runs through the side of the CG. The gravel pad was fairly level(didn’t need any blocks under tires) with a picnic table, fish cleaning station, fire pit and stand up bbq. For the three nights we were in back in site 37, which was along the fence side of the CG. Site 37 had the same picnic table, cleaning table, stand up bbq and fire pit. This site’s pad was plenty long enough so we could put our toy hauler patio down. For both sites we got 1 bar on both Verizon and T-Mobile. As there is no Wifi in this CG, we used starlink. Since our starlink antenna is not hard mounted, we were able to move the antenna around to get a good signal through the trees. We were surprised this COE didn’t sell firewood nor ice. We enjoyed walking our dog around and even did some fly fishing in the adjacent river. We thoroughly enjoyed this COE.

      Nashville Shores

      Great Off Season Stay

We followed RV Life Trip Wizard GPS and Waze off I-40 to Nashville Shores RV Resort without any issues. Check-in was quick, easy, and informative, and we headed to back-in site 7 with full hookups (FHUs). The concrete pad was level, with the water hookup located at the very back of the site. Water pressure was good at around 60 psi but dropped somewhat as the campground (CG) filled up over the weekend. We had 3 bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile, with T-Mobile providing a respectable 108 Mbps download. We used our T-Mobile Home Internet, which delivered 126 Mbps, rather than Starlink. Although there were trees along the CG's perimeter, most sites appeared to have a reasonably clear view of the sky for satellite internet. Site spacing was okay, although neighboring RVs were still fairly close. Several sites were located along the lake, with a few appearing long enough to accommodate larger rigs. We suggest calling the office for details on reserving one of those waterfront sites. One of our favorite amenities was the large fenced dog run, with plenty of room to throw a ball and let our pup burn off some energy. We also appreciated having two fire pits at our site. One was behind our rig, providing a nice spot away from the CG road, while the other was near the front, next to a small concrete patio with a picnic table. Although the CG filled up during our mid-October weekend stay, the adjacent water park had closed for the season on October 1. Without the water park crowds and activity, we found Nashville Shores to be a very enjoyable place to stay."

Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park

The waterfalls are beautiful and relaxing. You can hike the high-easier trail (but tree roots are present) or the lower-harder trails and be a unprofessional rock climber right down to the falls. 2.5 mile hike if you go all the way around. We spent over 2.5 hours here. Bonus is that if you are not camping here... you can use the very very clean showers for $5!

      Wiseman Park

      Self serve campsite

Sides are clean and well spaced. The review said before that it was $20 a night. It’s now $30 a night for 20 amp service and I believe 44 for 30 or 50 amp service.

Great RV Resort and Perfect for Visiting Nashville

We had such a nice stay. From the moment we arrived, we felt comfortable and welcomed. The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and the whole campground had a really nice, relaxed feel to it.

Our site was spacious and easy to get into, and we really appreciated how clean and well cared for everything was. After spending the day exploring Nashville, it was nice to come back to the campground, slow down and just enjoy the evening.

The location worked out great for us too. We were close enough to enjoy everything Nashville has to offer, but when we came back to the RV, it felt like we could get away from all the activity and relax.

One of the things we enjoy about RV travel is finding places that you actually look forward to coming back to at the end of the day, and this was definitely one of those places. We made some great memories here and would absolutely stay again the next time we’re in Nashville!

      Rural Hill Farm

      Shake out

We came here for our shake out of our new trailer as it’s only about 20 min from home and we could still go to work. We will probably come back when we just want to “get out of the house” for a few days.

The place is beautiful and if you want to be in the middle of nowhere, this is it! The grounds are easily walkable with a lot of open spaces. Saw a lot of wildlife so come in slow so you don’t hit a deer.

Do NOT come in from South Mount Juliet road. The turn onto Couchville Pike is tight for cars, let alone pulling a camper. Come in off of I-840 and you will be fine.

We got decent wifi and I did a video call without lag. Full hookups (50amp)

No on site staff that we saw other than grounds crew.

    Guide to Smyrna

Camping options near Smyrna, Tennessee range from primitive lakefront sites to full-service RV parks along Percy Priest Lake. The region sits at approximately 550 feet elevation with a moderate climate featuring hot summers and mild winters. Most campgrounds in the area remain heavily wooded, providing natural shade during the summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.

    What to do

Kayaking on Percy Priest Lake: Seven Points Campground offers excellent water access with clearly marked launch areas. "This is a great, easy access campground with great amenities. Lake front sites for campers or tents. Close to groceries and gas station," notes Austin R. about Seven Points.

Hiking through cedar forests: The unique cedar glade ecosystem at Cedars of Lebanon State Park provides distinctive hiking opportunities on marked trails. "Cedars of Lebanon is a great State Park in middle TN for camping and for day hikes. It has a great pool, and the natural area where it's located features tons of endemic species to the area!" states Phoebe A. about Cedars of Lebanon State Park Campground.

Swimming at designated beaches: Nashville Shores combines camping with waterpark access during summer months. "The water park is amazing," says Jared B., though another camper notes "the water park is not open during the week although it had officially opened the week before."

    What campers like

Secluded waterfront sites: Anderson Road Campground receives praise for its spacious, private campsites. "These campsites are great - nice and spread out and tucked in the woods. Plus, the campsites closest to the lakes are right on the water or across the road from the water, so great for fishing and gorgeous sunsets too!" reports Sara U. about Anderson Road Campground.

Level concrete pads: Four Corners RV Resort features modern, well-maintained sites. "The sites are concrete, level and roomy with full hookups (great water pressure!), new picnic tables and fire rings. There is not one bad location on the lakeside sites," explains Susan & Kevin W. about Four Corners RV Resort.

Year-round camping options: Nashville I-24 Campground in Smyrna provides camping access regardless of season. "Full hook-ups, plenty of trees for shade, laundry, showers and toilets. No frills. They have a pool and a pavilion with live music every once in a while. Pull though and back in sites," states Jacob S.

    What you should know

Bathroom accessibility varies: At Poole Knobs, prepare for potentially long walks to facilities. "First of all, I love COE campgrounds. They are usually clean, scenic, and have lots of space between campsites. Poole Knobs has all of that, but the bathrooms were ridiculously hard to get to. If you get a site along the lake, expect a long walk and then an arduous climb," warns Larry R. about Poole Knobs.

Mosquito populations: Waterfront camping often means dealing with insects. One camper at Four Corners RV Resort cautions, "MOSQUITOS! The first and last night we stayed the mosquitos were so bad we couldn't be outside. There were two nights in between that it was tolerable."

Airport noise: Some campgrounds sit beneath Nashville airport flight paths. A visitor at Nashville Shores mentions, "No one mentioned that this place is on the flight path of the international airport."

    Tips for camping with families

Seasonal programming: The Halloween weekend at Cedars of Lebanon offers special activities. "Their halloween weekend is a great time of fun for the kids!" says Justin L.

Playground access: Nashville KOA Resort provides multiple play areas. "Paved roads the kids loved scootering on. Would definitely stay again," shares Jennifer H. about Nashville KOA Resort.

Swimming options: Multiple campgrounds offer water access, but facilities vary. One camper at Anderson Road notes the lake bottom is "rocky here but we had no trouble walking in and swimming with our Crocs on."

    Tips from RVers

Site length verification: Check measurements carefully when booking at lakeside parks. A camper at Safe Harbor RV Resort advises, "Be very cautious of the site lengths. Some are extremely short and I'd say the measurements are nearly exact. Since our site backed up to a drop off, there was a small fence so no way to 'hang over' the pad a little for extra room."

Seasonal differences: Consider timing for the best experience at Nashville I-24 Campground. "Spent about a month there in a large class A at 2 locations, 1st was a pull through easy to get in and out obviously but way too open only shade a dead hickory tree that still had some nuts that kept dropping on my roof the second was a shady spot along the back fence," reports Victor S.

Leveling requirements: Some campgrounds require equipment for proper setup. A reviewer at Seven Points notes, "I did notice, however, some the sites had seriously sloping drives so lots of leveling would have been required."
