    River City Campground

    Did Not Meet the Mark

We had read that this campground (CG) could be confusing to find, but following our GPS and the confirmation email instructions, we had no major issues. Coming off I-90, we turned right at a Food Mart and followed the road and“River City” sign through a small industrial area that borders the CG. Per the email, we drove straight in and went to our assigned pull-through site 90 with full hookups. The gravel site was level, with utilities placed toward the rear and the sewer hookup at the very end. We needed 20’ of sewer hose. Water pressure was decent (~45 psi) and the 50-amp electric worked well. After setting up, we picked up an envelope from the info board that his additional CG info by the one-room shower house and paid the required $50 cash for our overnight stay. The email mentioned we could contact the camp host if needed. We had 2 bars on Verizon and 3 on T-Mobile. There would be no issues with satellite reception—there are no mature trees. There’s no CG Wi-Fi. There’s one row of pull-through sites that are packed tightly together. This seems to be where the overnighters go. Each has a metal-wheel fire pit, but if your neighbor lights a fire, it could be dangerously close to your rig. Our site had no picnic table, although most others did. This is a newer CG still under development—some grass and patios were going in, likely catering to seasonal boaters and full-timers (based on the number of older rigs). There’s no designated dog area, and green space is limited. The grounds currently feel more like a dusty parking lot, and we noticed heavy truck traffic on the entry road during the day. Most of the CG sites are back-ins with better spacing between sites. The CG is a few miles away from the interstate so none of that noise. There’s a pleasant view of nearby hills. We often travel through South Dakota and were hoping River City could be a destination stop. This time we were here to see the Dignity of Earth and Sky statue. At $50, and with the current layout and conditions, it wasn’t worth it—even just for an overnighter.

    Hills RV Park

Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

PROS Secluded, well maintained, new comfort station, horsecamp I don’t think any site is bad

CONS Short sites, narrow country road

Firewood fish cleaning station water horse trails playground biking birding boating fishing hunting swimming flush toilets showers picnic tables fire ring/grill boat ramp dump station

The Pease Creek Recreation Area Horse campground is a nonelectric site. You will find a fire ring picnic table horse corral vault toilets water spigots Generator may be used from 8 am to 9 pm. Dogs must be on a ten foot leash. Make sure out of state horses have proper documentation for health.

Recreation Area was created when the Fort Randall Dam was created in 1953. There are 540 miles of shoreline and 102,000 acres of surface water. The land surrounding the recreation area was the ancestral homeland to numerous Plains Indians. Mainly short sites in this cozy campground with a new bath/shower house. Campground is well maintained. The road in is a very narrow country road meaning the camp and road are better suited for smaller rigs. You will find 600 acres to hike, horseback ride, fish, bird watch, hunt, all things outdoors along the Missouri River. This area provides all types of water sports, winter sports, wildlife viewing, fishing and hunting.

Firewood Alert:   Please purchase firewood in the local area. Do not transport from another state, if you do please burn immediately due to the Emerald Ash Borer.

CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY Another issue that has become an increasing problem is Aquatic Invasive Species .(AIS) which is spreading in the United States. There are different types of AIS and they are being spread by several methods. Boaters, of all types, help spread or help stop the spread by taking care of their watercraft. Before leaving a boat launch practice the CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY technique. Many states require a AIS permit before you place watercraft in the water.

    R & R Campground

Couldn’t ask for more from a highway stop

This is a full-service campground directly alongside I90. Even though it’s adjacent to the interstate, we really didn’t hear any highway noise. The park has full hookups with both 30 and 50 amp sites. The water pressure is great and the water/sewer connections are well-placed. The sites are level and many are well-shaded. There is a small convenience store with ice and a couple of other essentials. There are restaurants and other amenities within walking distance. Everything is very clean — the laundry room is spotless. The host, Julie is exceptionally hospitable, friendly and accommodating. If you’re just passing through or just want a centrally located spot from which to explore the area, you’re unlikely to find a better spot.

    Mitchell KOA

    Family Friendly Stop Over

We stayed at the Mitchell KOA one night as a stop over on our way to Custer, SD. The feature we liked best is that all RV, 5th Wheel/Camper sites are set up as pull through. We called while on the road to see if they had any open spots, and they got us in for the night:) The campground hosts were very welcoming and friendly. There is an outdoor pool, but it was pretty crowded (With temps in the 90's who could blame anyone!!!) and they have a cute little miniature golf course too!! This is a pet friendly place with a large fenced in area for your pets to play in. The only drawback we saw was the lack of trees for shade and privacy. You can literally shake hands with your next door neighbor while sitting at your picnic table.

    Hidden Gem Campground

    Wide open spaces. 1-605-481-1741 reservations.

This is a relatively new campground. Trees are young but hold promise. Lawn care is immaculate. Sites are level gravel pads. 15 - 30 - 50 amp service. Water, sewer, and WIFI at each site. There are 71 sites to choose from. This campground can be found on Facebook. There are no showers or bathroom facilities at the campground. Payment can be made at the bar just north of the campground sites. Also, volleyball, pizza, and chips at full bar can be enjoyed. There are no fire pits, but you may use your own fire pit if it is contained.

    Oasis Campground

    Great campground

This campground is smaller but we have a 44 ft fifth wheel toy hauler and we had plenty of room. Their sites are close but it really was not a problem there is so much room to walk and places to sit and enjoy the sunsets. The showers were very clean with good hot water. We wi stay there again!!
