    Paulson RV Park

    RV, tent, and mobile homes

They had long term parking for campers not hooked up to anything and long term parking for full hookups. No dumping station because most the sites all have sewer. Were able to hook to water through the winter as well. No one else around could hook us up to water. Super cheap too. $200 per month for long term plus electric you are responsible for and $15 per day for short term. Cheaper if you are just going to park or pop a tent.

Modern Campground — Niobrara State Park

Tree shade and spacious back in.

Nice camping for extended stay of 14 days. Different length back in sites with picnic table and fire ring with grill. Camp host available. Handicap pad sites. I would have given a five star except for the cost!

We think $30/day for just electric is expensive but we’d been boon docking so we sprung for the expense for 3 nights. Showers are extra😳. Laundry available.

Little town of Niobrara, just a few miles away has limited shopping but a nice little grocery store, hardware store, museum, and fuel.

Confluence of the Missouri and Niobrara Rivers.

Nebraska State Parks have walk up and reservable spaces. We usually risk it and easily found a walk up on a Monday afternoon after the weekend crowd left.

We stayed in the RV campground but took a bike ride around the rest of the park. We stopped at the park office and chatted with assistant superintendent Nate. Very nice guy with lots of good info.. He told us about a nice loop we could continue our bike ride and we went around the picnic and tent area. Some incredible exclusive sites and great views of the Niobrara.

    Hidden Gem Campground

    Newer Campground

The campground (CG) was easy to find right off SD-46. Our friends got in before us and were told to go pick a site and then check in at the Pad 71 restaurant/bar. They passed that info to us, and we went straight to back-in site 53 with FHUs. It had been raining, and the gravel site was narrow and at 90 degrees. We ended up putting ruts in the ground. The campground is fairly new, and there were not many campers— a few transient workers and maybe full timers— but their sites were clean and well organized. The water hookup was in the middle of the site, but the electric and sewer were at the very end, so we needed about 25’ of sewer hose. All the sites were back-in. We got 3 bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. There were no trees in this campground, so satellite is not an issue. None of the campsites had a picnic table nor fire pit. There were no formal dog areas, but there was plenty of room to walk your dog. When we stayed there, there were no restroom/shower facilities nor a dump station. The CG did not have Wi-Fi. There is no dumpster in the CG area, so you have to drive up to the back of the bar/restaurant building. There’s pickleball, volleyball, and horseshoe pits at Pad 71. The town of Wagner, South Dakota, has several useful amenities for RVers, including a full-service grocery store, hardware store, multiple gas stations, a laundromat, and a few restaurants. This campground worked well for our 6-days stay to pheasant hunt.

CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY Another issue that has become an increasing problem is Aquatic Invasive Species .(AIS) which is spreading in the United States. There are different types of AIS and they are being spread by several methods. Boaters, of all types, help spread or help stop the spread by taking care of their watercraft. Before leaving a boat launch practice the CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY technique. Many states require a AIS permit before you place watercraft in the water.

    Spencer Park Fairgrounds

Basic campground near the South Dakota border

Spencer Park Fairgrounds in Spencer, Nebraska is a basically a square grass lot with campsites along one side. It's quiet and peaceful here. Each site has electric and water hookups. There is a dump station about a block away. The rate is $20/night and there is a drop box by the bathrooms.

You'll enter through the fairgrounds parking lot which is gravel and fairly bumpy. They don't have individual picnic tables or fire rings at the campsites, but I did notice a stack of fire rings sitting nearby, so it looks like they might put them out by the sites occasionally. For amenities, there's a public pool right there on the fairgrounds and a brand-new playground.

The bathrooms have concrete walls and concrete floors, and everything seemed very clean. It’s a single-occupancy setup with one shower, so only one person can use the bathroom or shower at a time.

I had a great Verizon 5G signal here with 350Mpbs down and 50Mbps up.

    Gilman Park

Four sites in a city park

If you are passing through northeast Nebraska, Gilman Park Campground in Pierce Nebraska is a convenient, budget-friendly stopover. It is a small, basic setup located right inside a lovely city park. There is not a dump station directly inside the park, but there is a public dump station located in the town about two minutes away. In May 2026 the nightly rate was $20, with a 5 night maximum stay.

The camping layout is very straightforward, with four campsites lined up together. There are two shared power pedestals, with each pedestal serving two campsites. These are 30-amp electric only. All four sites share a single water spigot as far as I could tell, so you may need a long hose to fill your tank. There is one shared charcoal grill, a trash can, and an area with a picnic table.

The surrounding park is beautiful and I enjoyed my time here. There is a lake with a fishing dock. There are two separate playgrounds and multiple picnic shelters equipped with their own grills. There is a brick bathroom building in the park, but I did not go inside.

Right next to the campsites sits a local Pioneer Museum. It wasn't open during our visit, but it looks like a neat historical feature when accessible.

Verizon is strong here, with a 5G signal providing 200Mbps down and 6Mbps up.

This campground is a gem snuggled along the Missouri River on the Nebraska side of the river. Lewis and Clark journeyed up the Missouri River on their way to the Pacific Ocean. In 1874 a group of Mennonites settled along the now Lewis& Clark Lake. Ground was broken in 1952 at the damsite. Now the public is able to recreate in numerous campgrounds and recreation sites along the Nebraska and South Dakota shore line

    Ewing City Park

Nearly free small town camping with full hookups

The Ewing City Park campground features about 10 gravel sites that are mostly level. Each site offers full hookups including power, water, and sewer for$13 a night. What a bargain!

The sites are fairly close together, spaced about 10 feet apart. There was nobody else here during my stay, so there was plenty of room and privacy. Houses and farm buildings surround the campground on two sides, which gives it a cozy feel. The campsites do not have any shade. I could see semi trucks and hear some highway noise from my position in campground. There are no fire rings, and only one site had a picnic table.

There are no restrooms located directly at the campground. However, there are restrooms at the city park/baseball field, which is about a 5 minute walk. They were older but functional. That city park also has a small playground, tennis courts, and a basketball court. There is a cell phone tower across the street, but evidently it is neither Verizon nor T-mobile. But I had a good Verizon 4G signal with 100 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up. My T-Mobile signal here was poor, at about 1 Mbps up and down.

The downtown area is within walking distance and had a few businesses. There is a scenic, historical mural in town.

Guide to Niobrara

The Missouri River forms the boundary between Nebraska and South Dakota near Niobrara, creating a diverse landscape for camping with river bluffs, wooded areas, and open grasslands. The region typically experiences hot summers with temperatures averaging 85-90°F and cold winters with lows often below freezing. Campsites in the area range from basic tent spots to developed RV sites near Niobrara, Nebraska, with varying levels of shade and proximity to water.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The Missouri River and Lewis and Clark Lake offer excellent fishing spots. At Nebraska Tailwaters, there's "a fishing pier and boat ramp" where many visitors enjoy "fishing along the river." One camper noted that they "had a good time fishing in the Missouri River" while staying at this recreation area.

Hiking and biking trails: Several campgrounds maintain trail systems for exploring the area. Yankton — Lewis And Clark Recreation Area features "hiking trails, parks, and a georgous lake for swimming or boating." A visitor mentioned "the park has a bike trail that connects all the beaches" making it easy to explore multiple areas without driving.

Water activities: Boating, swimming, and water sports are popular during summer months. One camper described Lewis and Clark Recreation Area as having "great fishing and boating, and sailing," noting that the campground is "clean" and "campsites are not sitting on top of each other." Several beaches along the lake provide swimming access from late May through early September.

What campers like

River views: Campsites with Missouri River views are highly sought after. At Weigand Campground — Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, campers appreciate that "Sites on near lake side are great" with one visitor noting they "had a full view of the lake and the surrounding area and it was beautiful." Another mentioned enjoying a "beautiful sunset on the water."

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and shower facilities. At Nebraska Tailwaters, one camper reported the bathrooms as "the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen at a campground" while another noted "shower facilities were clean." A visitor to Lewis and Clark SRA mentioned "bathrooms are very clean and well stocked."

Spacious sites: Several campgrounds offer ample room between sites. Visitors to Big River Marsh RV Park described it as "quiet and peaceful" with proximity to boat ramps making it "one of our favorites" for river access. One reviewer called it a "nice simple RV Park very close to the boat ramp."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds require advance booking during peak season. For Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, "sites get booked fast. If it is during peak season, you want to reserve a site 90 days in advance." Other campgrounds like Veterans Memorial RV Park operate differently, with one camper noting "make a free will donation at the city office 2 blocks south."

Seasonal considerations: Most water systems shut down in winter months. A March visitor to Lewis and Clark SRA reported "water is still shut down for the season" and "we are the only ones here in the entire park (mid-March)." Off-season camping offers solitude but with limited services.

Cell service variations: Connectivity differs significantly between campgrounds. At Lewis and Clark SRA, one camper reported "4 bars of 5G cell service at my camp site" with "a WIFI hot spot available at the camp office as well." Coverage tends to be stronger near Yankton and weaker in more remote areas.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and kid-friendly areas: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play spaces. Paulson RV Park offers both short-term and long-term camping options with a camper noting "we texted the host asking for a spot and got a quick response back." The park's location near town means "there is a gas station about 3 blocks away" for convenience.

Beach access for swimming: Look for campgrounds with designated swimming areas. One visitor described Larson's Landing RV Park as having "a family area and a swimming area with a park for the kids" where many campers gather during hot summer days.

Site selection for privacy: Choose sites away from main roads for quieter family camping. At Lynch City RV Park, sites include "picnic tables and fire pits with grates" with "a picnic area with cement floors and cover" for group meals or activities regardless of weather conditions.

Tips from RVers

RV hook-up availability: Ryken's RV Park offers full connections for recreational vehicles. A seasonal camper reported "there are sewer, water and electrical 30/50 amp hook ups" and "the pads are even" making leveling easy. They also noted "the overall cost of the seasonal spot is the lowest of all the other parks."

Site dimensions: Check length restrictions when booking RV sites. At Weigand Campground, a camper with a "28' 5th wheel and a 20' long truck" found "site 32 was a little tight" and "a little shorter than the 50' length expected," requiring them to "park the pull vehicle in the grass to stay off the road."

Winter storage options: Some RV sites near Niobrara, Nebraska offer off-season storage. One Ryken's RV Park visitor mentioned "we also stored our RV for the winter at the park and the fees are very cheap to do that," making it convenient for seasonal campers who return to the area regularly.
