Sitting along the Missouri River inside the city limits of Chamberlain, American Creek Campground runs from April through October and draws RV travelers and tent campers who want water access without driving far off Interstate 90. The campground is privately managed and priced accordingly, ranging from $28 to $60 per night depending on site type, which puts it well above comparable South Dakota state campground rates. That gap is worth knowing before you book.
The layout varies considerably depending on which section you land in. Pull-through sites near the entrance read more like a paved lot, while sites deeper in the grounds have tree cover and more breathing room. River-facing sites, particularly numbers 32, 33, and 36, sit directly above the Missouri and fill fast. Tyler Jensen calls site 36 "a shaded back-in site, ~80ft long with water and 50/30/20," which gives a useful sense of what the better spots actually provide. Asphalt pads keep RVs level, and water hookups are available at every site, with 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service throughout.
Water access is the campground's main draw. There is a swimming beach, a fishing pier, and a boat ramp on site, along with kayak and paddleboard rentals. A dump station is located near the office exit. Bathrooms and showers earn consistent marks for cleanliness across multiple reviews.
Storms can develop quickly in this part of South Dakota, and the campground sits in open river terrain with limited natural windbreaks in some sections. Cell service gets a passing mention in a couple of reviews but is not flagged as a problem. Nearby alternatives for comparison include Cedar Shore Resort and River City Campground, both within roughly a mile. Reservations are accepted and recommended for summer weekends, especially if you want one of the river-view sites.
