Tent campers near Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania have access to several established campgrounds within a short drive, including Ridley Creek State Park's group camp area and Hibernia County Park. Ridley Creek State Park offers a tent camping experience with open field sites and two fire pits, approximately 5 miles from Garnet Valley. This campground provides access to multiple hiking trails while maintaining proximity to suburban Philadelphia areas. Other options include Fort Washington State Park Campground and Evansburg State Park, both offering tent camping within 30 miles of Garnet Valley.

Most tent sites in the region feature basic amenities with varying levels of facilities. Ridley Creek's group camping area provides fire rings, picnic tables, and allows pets, but lacks showers and individual tent sites. Hibernia County Park offers more rustic tent camping with two small loops—Lake Loop and Fiddler's Loop—for $15 per night with picnic tables and fire rings with built-in grills but no hookups. Campers should note that many sites require advance reservations, particularly during peak season. Water availability varies significantly between locations, with some parks offering drinking water access while others require campers to bring their own supply.

Walk-in tent sites at these parks provide a more secluded experience compared to drive-in options. The heavily wooded sites at Hibernia County Park create natural separation between campsites and offer hammock hanging opportunities among the trees. Morning wildlife viewing is common, with trail access directly from most campgrounds. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, tent campers appreciate the natural setting: "We loved the lake campground. The lake is about a 3 minute hike down the clearly marked trails. Each site has a large picnic table and a fire ring with a built-in grill." For backcountry tent camping enthusiasts, the trail networks throughout these parks provide day hiking opportunities, though true backcountry camping options are limited in this developed region of southeastern Pennsylvania.

Washington Crossing State Park - TEMP CLOSED FOR 2024

      Revolutionary History near Delaware River

Nestled along the picturesque Delaware River in beautiful Bucks County, Washington Crossing Historic Park is one of those destinations where American history practically jumps out from behind every tree. This sprawling, beautifully preserved historic park commemorates George Washington's daring Christmas night crossing of the Delaware in 1776, with charming colonial buildings, expansive green spaces, shaded walking paths and lovely riverfront scenery. Divided into Upper and Lower sections, the park offers plenty to explore, from historic homesteads and interpretive exhibits to scenic picnic areas and the impressive Bowman's Hill Tower. Unfortunately, while the park delivers a wonderful outdoor experience, traditional overnight camping isn't part of the equation unless your a Boy Scout or accompanying one of their troops.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spectacular Revolutionary War history at the very site of Washington's legendary Delaware River crossing; (2) Beautifully maintained grounds featuring mature trees, open lawns and scenic riverfront views; (3) Fascinating colonial-era buildings, historic demonstrations and educational exhibits that bring America's founding history to life; (4) Wonderful recreational opportunities, including walking, cycling, fishing, kayaking and picnicking; and (5) Convenient proximity to charming New Hope, the Delaware Canal towpath and Bowman's Hill Tower, offering plenty of opportunities to extend your adventure.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) No conventional public tent or RV camping, with overnight group camping restricted to organized Scout groups by prior arrangement; (2) No dedicated RV campsites, electrical hookups, water connections or dump station; (3) Park grounds generally close at sunset, limiting opportunities to linger into the evening; (4) Some historic buildings and attractions require admission fees or operate on limited schedules; and (5) Periodic restoration projects and special events can restrict access to certain areas, while the historic Washington Crossing Bridge's three-ton weight limit makes it unsuitable for larger RVs.

      Happy Camping!

      Country Acres Campground

      Lovely campground!

Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!

      Old Mill Stream Campground

      Never Again

The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.

This campground is part of the Wharton State Forest and has several campgrounds in the area. Great wooded sites right on a lake. Pretty good separation between sites with good tree separation between sites. Some road noise not overly affecting site.

      Beacon Hill Camping

      Great location

We stayed here to go to the Hershey RV show—about 55 min drive. Right in the center of Amish country. Campground is adults only. It was very clean. The bathrooms were very clean with great water pressure. The roads are tight for getting into sites. Site 5 was not level side to side. We met great people there.

      Tohickon Family Campground

      Simple, peaceful FHU

We stayed just a couple nights here on our way north. The camp host was helpful before our stay and during check-in. Our site was pretty isolated from the others, so it was very quiet (no complaints here). There is a decent mix of sunny sites by the river and shady sites under the trees. The weather was perfect mid September. There wasn't anything spectacular for me, but it was a good experience and it was a nice taste of fall PA scenery. Beware that the roads are tight for a big rig. Side note, it did seem like most campers lived there.

      Country Acres Campground

      Excellent But.

The campground is in excellent condition. The facilities are top notch. The excellence and care of the campground is evident. The 4 stars is only due to the road noise and many of the sites are on top of each other. You feel like your neighbor is at your camp fire.

      Beautiful campground, loud campers

Beautiful campground but made the mistake of going on a holiday weekend, the campgrounds next to us were screaming and blasting music all day and throughout the night so we ended up leaving early. A beautiful campground when there aren’t noisy capers ruining it.

    Guide to Garnet Valley

Tent camping options near Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania extend beyond the immediate area into neighboring counties. The region sits at elevations of 200-400 feet in the Piedmont Plateau, with typically humid summers and mild winters. Fall camping remains comfortable with daytime temperatures in the 50s and 60s through October, while spring brings variable conditions with occasional rain that can make some tent sites muddy.

    What to do

Trail exploration at Hibernia County Park: Campers at this tent-friendly spot can access a half dozen easy trails directly from the campground area. "We loved the lake campground. My kids are age 3-12... The lake is about a 3 minute hike down the clearly marked trails," notes Anna in her review of Hibernia County Park.

Birding at local observation points: Fort Washington State Park offers seasonal hawk watching from a dedicated observation deck. "Since he was 2 years old I've taken my son, and we always have an amazing time, either hiking the trails to wandering in the woods looking for 'adventures,'" writes Andrew about visiting Evansburg State Park, which offers similar wildlife viewing opportunities.

Water recreation on nearby lakes: Several campgrounds provide access to fishing and non-motorized boating. "The park is lovely, but the camping facilities are subpar, primitive and lack any kind of privacy. I bike toured there," reports Ra F. about Green Lane Park, where the deep creek area offers additional water recreation options.

    What campers like

Hammock-friendly wooded sites: The heavily treed areas at several campgrounds create ideal hammock setup options. "Fiddler's loop is where we always camp... We camp in a 28ft 5th wheel for the most part... Most sites are heavily wooded which means plenty of hammock hanging opportunities," explains Jennifer S. in her review of Hibernia County Park.

Proximity to water features: Many tent sites are situated with quick access to creeks, ponds, and lakes. "The back of the campground backs up to a beautiful creek/ swamp, and the Batona trail runs through the campground," notes Brittany L. about Batona Campground in Wharton State Forest, which offers water features for campers.

Isolation from urban environments: Despite being near Philadelphia, many sites provide quiet woodland settings. "I go camping here almost every year and they have a nice open field with two sites and two fire pits. They also have a tone of trails to hike on," says David K. about his experiences at Ridley Creek State Park.

    What you should know

Facility limitations vary significantly: Many campgrounds have basic amenities with varying maintenance levels. "This campground has 2 small loops, the Lake Loop and the Fiddler's Loop... There are NO HOOKUPS, and water is not easy to come by if you are in an RV... There is NO DUMP STATION... There are only pit toilets in Fiddler's loop," explains Jennifer about the facilities at Hibernia County Park.

Parking and site access challenges: Some campgrounds require walk-ins from parking areas. "I like campgrounds which have you park off and walk in to your site. There is more foot traffic, but you don't hear as many cars coming and going and driving past your site all the time," shares Elliott B. about Goshen Pond Campground.

Reservation requirements and timing: Many sites have specific seasonal availability and booking requirements. "This campground is only open on the weekends, in season. Sites can be reserved online, by phone, or by 'first come, first served' self-registration," notes Jennifer S. about Hibernia County Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Age-appropriate water activities: Some parks offer designated child-friendly water areas. "The children's pond is a short ways away for well stocked fishing," notes Anna about Hibernia County Park, providing specialized fishing opportunities for younger campers.

Playground access near tent sites: Several campgrounds include dedicated play areas within walking distance of campsites. "Great park to do everything outdoorsy including, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing... It also has a great picnic area with grills," mentions J K. in their review of Evansburg State Park.

Private tent site options: Look for campgrounds with natural separation between sites when camping with children. "Our site was private and secluded. We had a great time," reports Ashley R. about her experience at Goshen Pond Campground, which offers more isolated tent sites that can work well for families.

    Tips from RVers

Limited large rig options: Most sites near Garnet Valley accommodate smaller RVs only. "As I said in the first paragraph, we mostly camp in a 28ft 5th wheel and though at first glance the sites don't look big enough to house an RV, there are a few sites that will, including #3, #17 & #18 and plenty of sites will fit a small RV or pop up camper," advises Jennifer S. about Hibernia County Park.

Water access preparation: RV campers should arrive with full tanks at many sites. "If you are coming in an RV, you should come with a full water tank. There is one spigot at the 'bathroom'," explains Jennifer S. about Hibernia County Park, highlighting the limited water access for RVs.

Site leveling requirements: Prepare for uneven terrain at many tent camping areas. "They aren't level, but nothing a little creative positioning can't fix," notes Jennifer S. about the RV sites at Hibernia County Park, a consideration important for both tent campers and RVers alike.
