Tent campsites near Codorus, Pennsylvania include several options for those seeking walk-in tent locations within state parks and rural settings. Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area offers walk-in tent sites with fire pits and picnic tables, while Mill Creek Camping Area provides tent-only camping along a creek with drinking water available. Lower Allen Community Park features walk-in tent sites along Yellow Breeches Creek, providing a more secluded tent camping experience.

Sites at Patapsco Valley feature crushed stone tent pads, which reviewers note can be uncomfortable without extra padding. Most walk-in tent areas provide fire rings and picnic tables, but tent campers should verify amenities before arrival as they vary by location. A camper noted that "sites had a bit of a grade/slope to it and made setting up our tent a bit more challenging." Lower-elevation tent sites at Patapsco can experience drainage issues during rainstorms, with one camper reporting their site "was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm and it was very wet even after the rain died down."

Tent camping areas in this region provide varying levels of privacy and natural settings. At Mill Creek Camping Area, tent sites are positioned along the creek, creating a cooler camping environment with the pleasant background sound of flowing water. According to a review, "campgrounds are spaced out large spaces for multiple tents." For backpackers seeking more remote tent camping, Annapolis Rock Campground along the Appalachian Trail offers primitive tent camping with no fires allowed but provides two privies and a spring near the campsites. Most tent-only areas in the region maintain quieter atmospheres than mixed-use campgrounds, though proximity to urban areas means some traffic noise may be audible at certain locations. Many walk-in tent sites require moderate hikes from parking areas, so tent campers should pack accordingly.

      Country Acres Campground

      Lovely campground!

Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!

      Artillery Ridge Campground

Great campsite. Fire pit, picnic table, swimming pool ( not open), miniature golf course, laundromat, bathrooms, showers, dump station, gathering areas for groups, playground, and even a horse area and stalls for horses. Dog friendly. Staff was very helpful and curious.

      Gifford Pinchot State Park Campground

We booked two nights mid October not realizing that it's duck hunting season and that hunting is allowed RIGHT by the campground - with kids everywhere. We were jolted out of sleep at 5 am by gun fire right near our site. It kept up for the next hour. In addition, the bathrooms, although clean are in poor condition. Peeling paint everywhere with bare concrete in the showers. For such a pretty site, we had a miserable stay. We left after one night.

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

      Old Mill Stream Campground

      Never Again

The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.

      Hosack Run

Quiet & Dog friendly - 20minutes from Gettysburg Battfields

This pet friendly campground in Caledonia State Park is .8 miles from the larger Chinquapin campground (no pets), ranger station and swimming pool. Our site #171 was level, paved, full hook ups and next to modern clean bathrooms with flush toilets, warm showers and outside dish washing sinks. Many available sites with and without services on a Sunday in October. There were a good number of friendly, tidy, long term campers with large wall tents. (They allow 21 day stays after Labor Day)

      Beacon Hill Camping

      Great location

We stayed here to go to the Hershey RV show—about 55 min drive. Right in the center of Amish country. Campground is adults only. It was very clean. The bathrooms were very clean with great water pressure. The roads are tight for getting into sites. Site 5 was not level side to side. We met great people there.

    Guide to Codorus

Walk-in tent sites near Codorus, Pennsylvania range from convenient locations with basic facilities to more remote wilderness options. The region features tent camping areas along creeks and rivers with varied terrain at elevations between 300-1700 feet. Several camping areas remain open from early spring through late fall, with limited winter options available at backcountry sites.

    What to do

Hiking on the Appalachian Trail: Access primitive backcountry camping at Annapolis Rock Campground after a moderate 2+ mile hike from Route 40. "About a dozen campsites to choose, and several group sites. Some fairly private," notes a camper. The elevation reaches 1700 feet, providing excellent views and outdoor recreation.

Kayak camping: Lower Allen Community Park offers tent sites perfectly positioned for water access. "You can put in a few miles up and float down to your site. There is parking right there," according to one reviewer. The park provides portapotties, fire pits, and picnic tables for paddlers.

Stream exploration: Tent sites at several campgrounds provide direct creek access with cold, clear water. Kids enjoy wading in the shallow sections while adults appreciate the natural cooling effect during summer months.

    What campers like

Scenic overlooks: At Susquehannock State Park Campground, campers enjoy remarkable vistas above the Susquehanna River. "It's look out over the Susquehanna River is fantastic and puts you up with the birds," reports one visitor. The park features two camping loops including walk-in tent sites.

Running water ambience: Mill Creek Camping Area provides tent sites positioned along a creek, creating a natural soundtrack. "Love the sound of water flowing at night," writes one camper. The creek location also creates "a cooler camping experience" during hot summer months.

Trail connectivity: Several campgrounds connect directly to trail networks for day hiking. "There are lots of long scenic hiking trails down to Deer creek and to the Susquehanna River," notes a camper at Susquehannock State Park. These networks allow tent campers to explore without driving to trailheads.

    What you should know

Weather considerations: Lower elevation tent sites can experience drainage problems during heavy rain. Sites positioned along slopes may require careful tent placement. "The site is public access and there are lots of hikes, joggers, and people expecting you not to be camping," reports a camper at Lancaster County Mill Creek Camping Area.

Reservation requirements: Most tent-only sites in the region require advance reservations through park offices or reservation systems. Lower Allen Community Park sites are secured by calling the township directly.

Fire restrictions: Some wilderness tent camping locations prohibit fires entirely. Annapolis Rock Campground on the Appalachian Trail has a strict no-fire policy due to restoration efforts. Other sites permit fires only in established fire rings.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area features exceptional child-friendly facilities. "The Hilton entrance of Patapsco Valley Park is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park," writes one visitor.

Terrain challenges: Many tent sites require walking on uneven terrain. "Hiking poles would have been good for the trails when we had a kid in a pack on our back," advises one camper. Families should pack accordingly for walk-in sites.

Wildlife education: Several campgrounds offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. At Susquehannock State Park, "There's a great bike trail to the Conowingo dam which is a nice place to visit, and a great place to see lots of eagles."

    Tips from RVers

Limited options: Most walk-in tent camping areas exclude RVs entirely. The few that accommodate both tend to separate the camping areas for different experiences.

Nearby alternatives: Dahlgren Backpacker Campground offers facilities specifically for hikers. "The sites are nice, but seemed pretty close together. As far as campgrounds on the AT go, this is one of the nicer ones," notes one backpacker who appreciated the facilities after hiking.

Preparation advice: Tent campers should bring additional padding for sites with crushed stone surfaces, as several campgrounds use this material for tent pads.
