Reaching 1,700 feet in elevation after a moderate 2-plus mile hike from Route 40, Annapolis Rock Campground sits just off the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge highlands near Myersville, Maryland. This is hike-in only. No cars, no drive-up sites, and no campfires, a restriction that reflects years of restoration work to recover the area from heavy overuse.
Around a dozen individual sites and at least one large group site spread across the area, with some offering reasonable separation from neighbors. Two bear poles are positioned along the campsite trail, one near the trailhead end and one closer to the water source. As Christopher B. notes, it's a "short walk to cold natural spring for water," which supplements the available drinking water on site. Two composting privies handle sanitation. Cell service is available.
The main draw is the Annapolis Rock overlook, roughly a fifth of a mile from camp, where open sightlines face out across the Maryland ridgeline. Single-pitch rock climbing is available on the cliffs there. One detail worth noting: copperheads have been spotted warming on the rocky surfaces at the overlook, so watch your footing. The campground is free to use, managed by the National Park Service as part of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail corridor.
Campers based in the region can find places to camp near Myersville that include drive-in alternatives, among them Greenbrier State Park Campground a couple of miles to the southwest. For those who prefer to stay on trail, Annapolis Rock rewards the climb.
