Camping near Bowerston, Ohio encompasses a variety of lake-oriented sites within the rolling hills of eastern Ohio. The area features several established campgrounds managed by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, including Atwood Lake Park and Tappan Lake Park. Salt Fork State Park, Ohio's largest state park at nearly 20,000 acres, lies approximately 30 miles south and provides year-round camping opportunities. Woods Tall Timber Resort in New Philadelphia offers highly-rated accommodations from May through November. Visitors seeking more primitive experiences can explore Harrison State Forest's Ronsheim Campground, which provides basic amenities without electric hookups or showers.

Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally from April through October, with limited year-round options. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F, while spring and fall bring cooler weather and occasional rain. Winter camping is available at Salt Fork State Park and Jefferson Lake State Park, though facilities may be limited. Reservations are strongly recommended during peak summer months, especially for lakeside sites. Cell service varies throughout the region, with stronger coverage near larger towns and more limited connectivity in forested areas. Fire restrictions may apply during dry periods, particularly in late summer.

The lake-based campgrounds provide distinct experiences based on amenities and atmosphere. According to reviews, Atwood Lake Park underwent significant renovations beginning in 2017, with campers noting the "beautiful landscape" and "clean, spacious facilities" in the newer camping areas. Many sites feature full hookups on level concrete pads with picnic tables and fire rings. RV campers will find the area particularly accommodating, with multiple campgrounds offering big-rig friendly sites with 50-amp service. Tent campers may prefer the more rustic settings at Jefferson Lake State Park, which one visitor described as having "mostly flat, shaded sites perfect for tents or trailers" with "18 miles of multi-use trails" for recreation.

Hidden Hollow Campground — Fernwood State Forest

There’s no electricity and no where in walking distance and the internet isn’t great, and at night u hear raccoons in the trash cans. If you come here bring a portable phone charger. There’s really nothing here, and the bathrooms are disgusting

      Berlin RV Park & Campground

This is the cleanest park we've ever used! The bathroom is tidy; the showers are roomy and convenient to use. There is a nice playground for younger kids as well as a pickleball court and basketball court for teens and adults. There also is a pleasant hiking trail. We stayed in Site 42, a concrete site, which was fantastic for my spouse's mobility issues. The sites are not super spaced apart, but, with the graduated elevation, we didn't feel smashed together. We visited Amish Country to absorb the beautiful fall scenery, to shop at local stores, and to relax by a campfire in the evening . The campground was perfect for us. If you're seeking a wilderness adventure , this park is not for you .

      Berlin RV Park & Campground

Nice home base in Amish country

Well maintained campground with friendly staff. Super spacious and clean bathhouse. Close to Berlin and Millersburg for exploring Amish country. Some road noise due to location on main highway.

      Salt Fork State Park Campground

Huge campground in huge park short drive from Route 70

We found site F26 at the far end of the loop. Short paved pad with electric very near a simple clean bathroom with flush toilets. Sites are treeless and fairly close together but the sites in our mini loop all backed up to the woods. Surprised to encounter mosquitoes in October. Overall the campground is huge with 5 separate loops that are spread far apart. The check in station is a significant distance from the first loop A and more than a mile from loop F so if you don’t have reservations, go to the website to find out which sites are available then drive around to make your selection -then call or go online to register. $45.50 for electric only site includes booking fee.

      Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

      beautifull park BUT!!!!

The park is beautiful, unlevel shade sites; is challenging to get the trailer level.  unfortunately, the bathhouses are neglected, dark and full of mildew inside the showers.  The park really needs to upgrade the bathhouses. The park itself is very nice and offers a lot of opportunities for outdoor exploration and hiking.

      Cherokee Park Camground

      Pretty area

This park is off the beaten path and filled mostly with Full Timers in beautiful landscaped sites. But room for overnighters like us. All sites have electric and water. The laundry is small, only 1 working washer, but it came in handy. The bathrooms have free showers but could use a deep cleaning. Big open field for the dog to play

      Crawford's Camping Park

      Nice little campground.

This is more a campground for RVs then tents or even roof top tents. Place is clean and the sites 90% of them are in the open. Very little shade. Travis runs the place and very nice and accommodating. Fire wood is 20 dollars for a massive amount.

      West Branch State Park Campground

Great overnight close to Ohio Turnpike

We were passing through on a weeknight in mid September. Many open sites. Sites are paved and many are sloped. Most are shaded. Our site #41 was fairly level with electricity. Close to huge bathhouse with flush toilets, showers and laundry. High above the lake with views through the trees. Appeared there were many long term campers but just as good for our short overnight stay. Online registration. $45 for electric only site.

The area sits at elevations between 900-1,200 feet, creating diverse fishing and boating environments across multiple reservoirs. Weather in the region can fluctuate dramatically, with summer thunderstorms common from June through August and relative humidity often exceeding 80% during peak camping months.

    What to do

Hiking trails around lakes: Jefferson Lake State Park features "18 miles of multi-use trails" with opportunities for both casual and more serious hikers. According to one camper, "Nice hiking trails around the lake and spillway" provide varying terrain for day hikes.

Fishing opportunities: Clendening Lake Marina & Campground offers a quieter fishing experience with boat restrictions. One visitor notes, "The lake is amazing fishing spot with 9.9 hp boat restrictions," which helps maintain the peaceful atmosphere for anglers.

Watercraft activities: Woods Tall Timber Resort provides varied water recreation. As one camper mentioned, "From the clean swimming lake, to ziplining, to rv camping," there are multiple options for enjoying the water. The resort operates seasonally from May through November.

Volleyball and recreation: Many campgrounds offer sports facilities beyond hiking and water activities. Jefferson Lake has "sand volleyball and basketball court" facilities maintained throughout the camping season, providing alternatives when weather conditions limit water recreation.

    What campers like

Spacious sites: Tappan Lake Park Campground has updated camping areas with well-designed sites. According to a recent visitor, "Sites are new, clean, full hookups, with plenty of paved surfaces to park. Camper sites are level and the hookups are new and easy to use."

Clean facilities: Salt Fork State Park Campground maintains high standards for their facilities. Campers report that "the vault toilets were cleaned thoroughly every morning" and the park is "well cared for" throughout the season.

Quiet atmosphere: Several campgrounds within 30 miles of Bowerston offer peaceful experiences. A visitor to Hidden Hollow noted it provides a "Great, quiet, close to nature experience," with minimal crowds even during peak season.

Affordable options: Free camping can be found at Ronsheim Campground. As one visitor succinctly stated, "It's nothing much, there isn't much in the way of activity save a few trails. However if you like adding trails to your list or you're fine with driving a little bit to Harrison or Salt Fork, they aren't far away at all. The overall reason I gave 5 stars though, is because it's free."

    What you should know

Campsite variations: Sites can vary dramatically in quality within the same campground. At Hidden Hollow Campground, "Most sites have fire rings. All free but you must fill out a registration card. There are pit toilets and a water pump. The ranger comes by everyday to collect registration cards."

Limited amenities: Smaller campgrounds typically offer fewer facilities. Jefferson Lake "advertise a water filling station but neglected to mention that it is non-potable water," requiring campers to bring their own drinking water.

Variable cell service: Connectivity changes across the region. At Clendening Lake, there is "ZERO cell phone reception" with both major carriers, while Jefferson Lake reports "AT&T 5g with 3 bars."

Seasonal closures: Most campgrounds operate from April through October, with limited winter options. Specific facilities may close earlier, with one camper noting, "It was late October so most things were closed" at Tappan Lake.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly beaches: Atwood Lake features recreational areas specifically designed for children. One family reported, "My kids and I have been coming to Atwood for the last 10 years. We look forward to it every summer. The people are friendly and there is always something to do!!"

Playground access: Atwood Lake Park Campground offers multiple recreation options. According to campers, "Kids love the playgrounds and being able to bike or scoot all around" which provides entertainment beyond water activities.

Fishing with children: Clendening Lake provides accessible fishing opportunities for young anglers. A visitor mentioned, "We caught plenty of fish up there for all 3 of us, including my 1st grader, all we used were worms and was surprised how much we caught."

Site selection for families: When camping with children, look for level sites away from steep terrain. One visitor to Jefferson Lake warned, "The majority of the campsites are also so hilly that you can't put a tent up on a flat spot. We ended up sliding downhill all night."

    Tips from RVers

Full hookup locations: Atwood Lake offers comprehensive services for recreational vehicles. A camper noted, "The H campground loops are full hookups, some right on the water. Electric, and primitive sites too."

Site leveling concerns: Many campgrounds in the region have uneven terrain. At Fernwood State Forest, "All paved sites with picnic tables," but visitors should still check for levelness, as many sites require adjustments.

Dump station access: Jefferson Lake has limitations for larger rigs. One camper reported, "Limited amenities. Only 5 electric sites. Very clean pit toilets. Well maintained campground," making it better suited for smaller RVs and trailers.

Extension cord requirements: Electric hookups may be positioned inconveniently at some sites. A Jefferson Lake visitor warned, "Electric is a little far behind pad. We almost needed extension cord," suggesting RVers bring additional power cord length.
