Atwood Lake Park Campground and Woods Tall Timber Resort are popular glamping destinations near Bowerston, Ohio, located in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The region sits at elevations between 900-1,200 feet with humid summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F. Most campgrounds in the area are situated on or near reservoir lakes created by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, providing water-based recreation opportunities throughout the May to October camping season.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Clendening Lake Marina & Campground offers a peaceful fishing experience with boat motor restrictions. "The lake is amazing fishing spot with 9.9 hp boat restrictions. The locals are very nice," notes Tanner G., who appreciates the kayak launches.
Hiking trails: Salt Fork State Park Campground has numerous hiking options. "There are several areas to pay for camping as well as primitive camp. It's near the water and they offer several trails. Other than the trails, there is a stone house to view as well as a cave," shares Jacqueline F.
Water recreation: With 1,500 acres of water, Atwood Lake Park Campground provides swimming and boating. "Atwood lake is a true gem. Has everything you need. The H campground loops are full hookups, some right on the water. Electric, and primitive sites too," explains Susan S., who enjoys the accessibility of the beach.
Winter activities: While most glamping in Bowerston closes for winter, several campgrounds remain open for cold-weather recreation. "We stayed in area 5. Awesome place. It was late October so most things were closed. We'll definitely be back in 2024," reports Denise H. about her experience at Tappan Lake Park.
What campers like
Private waterfront sites: Campers consistently praise the lakefront options at West Branch State Park Campground. "We're at site 160. No electricity, no hookups, but a HUGE lakefront site. We're in a self-contained RV so it's not a problem for us. Beach is right next door too!" raves Rino S.
Clean facilities: The attention to cleanliness is noted at Woods Tall Timber Resort. "WTTR is our families favorite place to be during camping season in Ohio. It has everything you can imagine, it's safe and CLEAN! We couldn't recommend a resort more than this one," shares Ashley S.
Family programming: Organized activities make camping with children easier. "My kids and I have been coming to Atwood for the last 10 years. We look forward to it every summer. The people are friendly and there is always something to do!!" writes Leslie C.
Nature viewing: The diverse wildlife creates opportunities for nature observation. "Just driving in saw turkeys and 'turkets' and two 6 point bucks. You can hike, swim, boat, bike and horseback ride," notes Shelly S. about Salt Fork State Park.
What you should know
Site selection matters: Many campgrounds have significant variation in site quality. "Section 5 is the bomb!! We stayed in the 5-520-531 section. Sites are new, clean, full hookups, with plenty of paved surfaces to park. Camper sites are level and the hookups are new and easy to use," advises Jim F. about Tappan Lake Park.
