## Overview

Rock Creek Recreation Area is named for the small creek that runs alongside this recreation site. The facilities, creek-fed concrete pond and bathhouse were originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. It is located just outside the town of Erwin, TN at an elevation of 2,300 feet - a welcome respite from the summer heat.

## Recreation

Hike on one (or all) of the trails adjacent to Rock Creek Recreation Area. Visitors can enjoy cooling off in the creek-fed concrete pond. Younger children can enjoy the playground located in the day use area of the recreation area. Campground programs are offered every Friday night in July at the amphitheater.

## Facilities

There are 27 fully accessible single and five double campsites in Rock Creek Recreation Area; all with electric hook-ups. In addition, there are five walk-in tent sites without electric hookups, which are available first-come, first served only. Three bathhouses are located within the recreation area; one in Loop A, one in Loop C, and one located by the concrete pond - it is a Civilian Conservation Corps-era bathhouse adapted for modern use. Each bathhouse has flush toilets and shower facilities. A dump station is located on site. An on-site host is located in the campground.

## Natural Features

Campsites are nestled in a cove hardwood forest. Adjacent to the campground is Unaka Mountain Wilderness area, a rugged and undeveloped area. 

## Nearby Attractions

The Appalachian Trail crosses TN 395 at Indian Grave Gap, 3.1 miles east of Rock Creek. Mountain Balds, Beauty Spot and Unaka Mountain Overlook are located nearby along Forest Service Road #230. Whitewater rafting on the Nolichucky River is provided by private companies located in Erwin, TN.

## Overview

Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area sits in the scenic mountains of Pisgah National Forest. This is a great place for small to medium-sized groups to swim, fish, tube, hike, camp, picnic and simply relax in the cool shade of the forest.

## Recreation

The river provides endless hours of fun for families and water enthusiasts, including swimming and tubing. Anglers can also try their luck for trout and smallmouth bass from the shore. Picnickers will enjoy relaxing in the shaded picnic shelter set amidst the deep woods. After eating, visitors can take a leisurely walk along a one-mile trail or get a workout on a 3.8-mile trail.

## Facilities

Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area offers 35 primitive campsites, sites equipped with picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts and campfire rings with grills. The facility provides hot showers and restrooms with flush toilets. Campers can purchase firewood, ice, tee shirts, souvenirs.

## Natural Features

As the name suggests, Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area is shaded by a thick hemlock forest with a mix of deciduous trees and rhododendrons. The facility is adjacent to the South Toe River and sits at an elevation of 2,900 feet.

Visitors can enjoy scenic driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway or hiking in Mount Mitchell State Park.

Carolina Hemlocks Rec Area

## Overview

Briar Bottom Group Campground is the perfect getaway for visitors to enjoy mountain scenery and easy access to hiking trails. The campground sits at the base of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, in Pisgah National Forest.

## Recreation

With the South Toe River located near the campground, visitors will have no shortage of things to do, including picnicking, day hiking, scenic driving and trout fishing. Hikers will be pleased with a variety of trails from which to choose, including a leisurely half-mile walk through the forest or a challenging 5.6-mile hike up Mt. Mitchell.   
  
The adjacent Black Mountain Campground has a playing field, volleyball courts and horseshoe pit available.

## Facilities

The facility has six separate campsites; each can accommodate up to 50 people. Sites are organized around a single loop with individual parking spurs, providing plenty of space for tents. The campground is equipped with flush toilets and campers can use showers at the adjacent Black Mountain Campground. A campground host is available for visitor assistance. 

## Natural Features

The campground sits at an elevation of 3,040 feet. The 6,684-foot Mt. Mitchell towers over the area, with several other high peaks of the Black Mountains nearby. The lush forest in this part of the Appalachian Mountains is rich with wildlife, plants and scenery. 

## Nearby Attractions

Groups can easily head out for a day of scenic driving along Blue Ridge Parkway or hiking in Mount Mitchell State Park.

Briar Bottom Group Campground

The campground is located in the shadow of Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain in the east at 6,684 ft. Accessing this mountain from the campground can be accomplished via Forest Rt. 472, a scenic but steep and curvy drive. From within the campground take a right on Rt. 472 and drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway (NOT for RVs). Take a right on the Parkway and proceed several miles to the Mt. Mitchell State Park and the mountain. Great views of the Black Mountains and several trails. Large football-size sports area. Camp Driftwood is located on the French Broad River, just a 12 minute drive to downtown Asheville. A very convenient location, easy in and out, you park at your site and Weaverville shopping and conveniences are just 3 miles away. The camp offers a bathhouse near the cabins&nbsp; and porto-jon on the southern more remote end. There are two beaches one for swimming, tubing and boating access the other for fishing and chillin dog friendly. The sound of the water rapids will captivate you. Located below Marshall highway (river road) you do hear vehicles mostly during work hours and across the wide river there is a train, super cool WNC feature, but some things to be aware of. The tent sites all come with a rock fire ring and picnic table, the first 4 sites have power and there is hose water at the bathhouse. The camp stretches 1/4 mile along the bank of the river. LEAVE NO TRACE CAMPING
