"The creek that runs by the campground is gorgeous, and my kids had fun finding Crayfish. Swimming and fishing: Harriman State Park features multiple water bodies for summer recreation. "A quick 40 minutes north of NYC, Harriman State Park has an eclectic little campground called Beaver Pond. The grounds are just steps away from Welch Lake, offering a lifeguard monitored sandy beach which is open during the summer season for swimming, fishing, and small boat craft further out," according to Steve W.

It is not a concrete pad haven and yes, there is mud. Our site was even and easy to level on. Site variability: Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground offers diverse camping spots with varying levels of privacy. "This is one of my favorite campsites I have been to but only because after several visits we have finally found our favorite site. This place can book up during camping season in the Northeast so make sure to book early in advance," advises Asher K.
Weekend crowds: Many campgrounds in the region experience significant differences between weekday and weekend occupancy. "Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great," notes Rebecca S. about Beaver Pond Campground.
Temperature fluctuations: The Hudson Valley experiences significant seasonal temperature variations. Nights can drop below 50°F even during summer months, while daytime temperatures regularly exceed 85°F in July and August. Layered clothing is recommended for comfortable camping.
Tips for camping with families
Look for platform sites: Raised camping platforms provide advantages in wet conditions. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained or if you are expecting rain during your stay," suggests Ethan K.
Check out recreation programs: Mountain Top RV Park offers structured activities for children. Jason G. notes, "The family-friendly atmosphere was evident through the thoughtfully designed property, including an updated pool, playground, game room, and a brand-new pickleball court that added a unique touch to the stay."
Consider off-season visits: Autumn camping provides fall foliage viewing with fewer crowds. "We make a habit of going during the end-of-summer/fall when you can watch the leaves change along the hiking trails, go apple and pumpkin picking near the campsites, and eat some scrumptious apple cinnamon doughnuts and drink pumpkin hot chocolate," recommends Robyn S. regarding Fahnestock State Park.
Tips from RVers
Highway access considerations: Tri-State RV Park offers easy highway access, which has both advantages and disadvantages. "Located just off the highway so lots of vehicle noise 24/7. Sites are on a gravel lot. Restrooms are clean. Not much else to say about this CG, is just a parking lot with hookups," explains Michael H.
Winter camping limitations: Most rv campgrounds near Buchanan, New York close during winter months. Dave B. notes one exception: "Friendly, aim to please staff. This is a point to point camp on the freeway. Easy on and off on I 84. Great place to pull in for the night if you are traveling. Safe, clean, and right on the Delaware River."
Advance reservations essential: Popular RV parks fill quickly during peak season. "This campground is great. Lots of activities a pool access, food court and basketball courts," reports Kaitlin B., highlighting the amenities that make advance planning necessary, especially for weekend stays from May through September.
