Best RV Parks & Resorts near Groton, CT

Several RV parks near Groton provide full hookup options for motorhomes and travel trailers. Aces High RV Park in East Lyme features big-rig friendly sites with water, electric, and sewer connections, plus a sanitary dump station. The park includes both waterfront back-in sites and spacious pull-through areas with gravel pads and grassy surroundings. One visitor noted, "Sites are well organized and no issues with hookups. Propane is available at the store." Sun Outdoors Mystic (formerly Seaport RV Resort) operates from April through mid-October with electric hookups, water connections, and level pull-through sites that accommodate larger RVs. Mystic KOA in North Stonington offers 50-amp service and full hookups on predominantly gravel sites, though some travelers report tight spacing for larger rigs.

Throughout the region, most RV parks maintain proximity to Interstate 95, providing convenient access to coastal attractions in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Cell service varies by location, with stronger coverage near Groton and more variable reception in outlying areas. Many parks implement seasonal operations, typically closing between mid-October and April, though Ashaway RV Resort in nearby Rhode Island remains open year-round with 257 sites. Pet policies generally allow dogs with standard restrictions, and most parks provide trash service and bathhouses with showers. According to one RV owner who stayed at Mystic KOA, "The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn't quite reach our part of the park." Reservations are strongly recommended during summer months and fall foliage season when occupancy rates peak.

    Newport RV Park

    Great location to Newport

We chose this park due to its location close to downtown Newport (a mere five miles). There is a lot to do in this area and we wanted to spend time sightseeing. The other camping option, which did appeal to us, was Fishermen’s Memorial State Park but it was a good 30-40 minutes away from downtown Newport and required paying bridge tolls so we decided to give Melville Ponds a go. There is another RV park closer to downtown but it seemed more like a parking lot not very appealing. Melville Ponds worked out the best for us because it was adjacent to a county park with wooded hiking trails, a large pond and an off-leash dog park which were very appealing because of our dog.

The park has over 100 sites and spread out over many acres. Roads are gravel and easy enough any size RV to navigate. Some sites are set beneath large trees in an attractive wooded setting while others are in an open grassy area with pads being both gravel and grass. The park is a mix of seasonal and transient campers. Site types include full hook-up (max 30 amp), water/electric only, dry camping, and a large tent section. There is a dump station located at the entrance to the park and gray water dump stations are spread among sites without sewer. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. The bathrooms and shower house are located in the middle of the park and were very clean. There is a small camp store, large playground, basketball court, and open air covered pavilion with picnic tables.

We chose a site in the open because the winds were projected to be 40-50 mph while we were there and we did not want falling branches on the coach. Our site (F4) had 30 amp and water. Satellite reception (Dish TV) was good and we were able to get a number of air antenna channels. The section that we were in was very big rig-friendly and one site that can be used as a pull-thru.

The park is open from April 15th to November 15th. Prices vary depending on the season, if you have a weekly/monthly rate, and the type of hook-ups you want. We paid $38/night for water and 30 amp service.

The park is located within 1/2 mile of restaurants, gas stations, grocery, shopping, and more. Downtown historic Newport is a 10-minute drive away and you are only 35 minutes from Providence.  There is definitely lots to do in Newport and Providence. You can tour 70-room mansions, visit the beach, brush up on tennis history at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, watch boats cruise in and out of a beautiful harbor, shop, eat at fabulous restaurants, and gawk at the charming historic homes.

The location of this park was great for what we were doing – not too far from Newport but in a nice quiet section of town. The distance between sites was far enough that you did not feel cramped or on top of your neighbor. The nearby hiking trail was perfect for our dog and while it was just a few miles long, it was great because it was within walking distance and she could swim in the pond. The close proximity of restaurants was an added bonus.

    Newport RV Park

Clean and quiet camping close to downtown

We stayed in the premium pull through sites here. The whole campground is gorgeous. You’ll notice how clean and quiet it is right when you first arrive. Check in was under a minute; the staff already had everything prepared which made it super simple. The premium sites have no shade and are a little close to the neighbors. However, they have great paver stone patios and fire pits. They also had a slight downhill slope so it required some extra blocks to level out. Overall, the whole place is a great campground. Plenty of hiking within walking distance and a short drive to all local attractions. Plenty of amenities and a modest camp store as well. I’ll be back for sure.

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

Guide to Groton

RV camping near Groton, Connecticut provides access to the Thames River estuary and Long Island Sound coastline. The area features a humid continental climate with warm summers averaging 80°F and cool winters, making May through October the prime camping season. Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, with only select facilities offering year-round options for recreational vehicles.

What to do

Beach access: Located within 15 miles of Sun Outdoors Mystic, campers can visit Misquamicut Beach in Westerly. "We loved Westerly & Misquamicut Beaches. Lots to do in the area and stores if needed," notes one visitor who used their campground as a convenient home base.

Historic sites: Fort Trumbull State Park offers maritime history exhibits within walking distance of Crocker's Boatyard. According to a recent camper, "We went and visited Fort Trumbull which is also walking distance away. Very nice place to visit and learn. Also took a tour of the Coast Guard Ship at Fort Trumbull."

Water activities: Kayaking opportunities exist near many campgrounds, with one visitor to Aces High RV Park reporting, "There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun."

What campers like

Pool facilities: Swimming pools rank high on camper satisfaction lists during summer months. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, a visitor noted, "Our stay was in the spring before their busy season started so some things like the pool and water features were closed but the appearance was that it was well cared for and was a very popular attraction for families."

Clean sites: Well-maintained grounds receive consistent praise, particularly at Strawberry Park, where a recent camper mentioned, "Easy check in right at front gate, didn't even have to get out of the truck. Site was wide and allowed me to easily back in. Near perfect level. New fence poles show renovations were consistently done."

Recreation options: Organized activities enhance camping experiences at larger facilities. A Strawberry Park visitor shared, "Lots of things for kids to do. We watched a magician and played pickle ball on the courts. Kids had fun on the many play grounds. Live band on Saturday night was nice."

What you should know

Variable site sizes: Campground density varies significantly across the region. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, one camper observed, "Our site was a nice long, level pull-thru. Hook-ups were placed in ideal locations for the pad which was gravel. There is a nice tent section that has a number of nice sites but do not have hookups but are located near a bathhouse."

Staff interactions: Management quality impacts visitor experiences. At Meadowlark RV Park, "We were received very friendly by a nice lady who told us everything about the camp and its surroundings," while another campground received criticism for staff conduct.

Seasonal operations: Most facilities close during winter. While Sun Outdoors Mystic typically operates from April through mid-October, Aces High RV Park stays open year-round according to a visitor who noted, "Many pull-thru sites, maybe 20 back ins on a pond. Nice staff, nice pool & facilities. Also, this is open year round."

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Organized recreation programs benefit families with children. A long-time Strawberry Park visitor shared, "Bingo every night, and more activities than you could possibly do! The kids ride their bikes to the sports fields, the rec center for the pool and activities. Oh and my young children LOVE the air pillow, they have spent hours on there."

Age-appropriate amenities: Seek campgrounds with dedicated children's facilities. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, "They had an arcade, theater area. The mini golf course was actually really nice and not the run-down homemade ones that you usually see at campgrounds."

Rainy day options: Weather contingencies matter for family trips. One Strawberry Park camper appreciated that "The rec staff always have a smile and they change the schedule when it rains to rainy day activities."

Tips from RVers

Site configuration: Consider how campsites are arranged for social situations. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, "We camped here with friends and got one of the 'buddy sites' so our patios faced each other. I like this configuration when camping with friends but would not like this site if we did not know our neighbors."

Hookup reliability: Utility quality varies between parks. At Countryside RV Park, a visitor confirmed, "Water, electric & sewer sites. Very quite, rules are in-forced. This is camping, if you're looking for entertainment bring your own!"

Off-season options: Winter camping requires advance planning. When visiting during colder months, check which amenities remain operational, as one camper at Sun Outdoors Mystic noted, "Our stay was in the spring before their busy season started so some things like the pool and water features were closed."
