Silver City KOA, located approximately 20 miles from Mimbres, offers more developed facilities for pets including clean grounds and cabin accommodations that accept dogs. Dream Catcher RV Park

    Welcoming and friendly

This RV park is right off of highway 10 so there is quite a bit of road noise and train noise. Park is currently operating at 25% capacity due to Covid and managers are doing a good job keeping everything sanitized and safe. We had no problem driving up and getting a spot for the night.

The La Quinta next door allows campers to use their pool and work out room so that was a nice bonus; there was an entrance in the side of the fence so you don’t have to walk on the busy road. Large gravel sites with full hook ups 30/50 amp. Facilities were very clean and well maintained. Staff was very friendly and helpful about surrounding area. Dog park fence currently under construction but we are informed of a nice dog park nearby.

In the clubhouse was a table with unwanted traveler items that you could pick up for “donation”

    * see picture for rates.

    Other useful info:

Nice library for books & DVDs (borrow or trade)

    Clean free showers

Laundry room $1.25 ea. washer / dryer  (included iron and ironing board)

    Activity room (closed for covid)

    Dumpsters and aluminum can recycling

    Sunrise RV Park

    Clovis, NM….Nice sized park

Nice lady checked us in and we were shown to our pull through camp site. Nice size for our 42’ 5th wheel plus parking our Dually. They have an enclosed pool, laundry room and nice dog park that has a double fence. Playground was large. No grass. It’s close to Walmart and a cute little downtown area.

    Ridge Park RV

Roomy sites, quiet, near Gila NF, CD trailhead and Silver City

This is an awesome park. The RV sites all have full hookups and are extra long and wide. Because the rv sites are situated around the perimeter of the very large greenspace and dog park, all sites have expansive views in all directions. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets! There are tent sites in the central green area with picnic table, firepit and shade trees. There is a great hiking trail, about 1/2 mile, that makes a loop. It is comfortably wide so you and your dog can see the trail and won't accidentally run into cactus. The park is a straight-shot easy 15 minute drive into Silver City and is convenient to Gila NF trails, several Continental Divide trailheads, the Catwalk and lots of other natural areas. Rosie and Bill, the owners are a wealth of info about the local sites and trails. The campground has a bathhouse, laundry, gym, communal library with books, games and puzzles.

    Silver City RV Park

Fun Easy Access to Silver City

We originally reserved one night and stayed 4. This modest little park (fairly priced) is next door to a market, 4 blocks from Silver City’s wonderful old town, and 7 blocks from a great dog park. They have a clean little laundromat, clean bathrooms, and friendly helpful staff. And a small coffee shop. We’ll be back.

    Dream Catcher RV Park

    Great Stopover

This Escapees RV park is right on the freeway and is a great stopover especially if you need hookups, a laundry and good cell signal. Facilities are excellent. It is not a beautiful place for camping, but it met all my needs including friendly, helpful service in the office. Wonderful dog park.

Guide to Mimbres

Mimbres, New Mexico sits at approximately 6,000 feet elevation in the southeastern portion of the Gila National Forest, characterized by pine-covered mountains and high desert terrain. Summer temperatures typically range from 75-90°F during the day, dropping to 50-60°F at night, while winter brings freezing temperatures and occasional snow at higher elevations. The area receives most of its precipitation during the late summer monsoon season, creating ideal camping conditions in spring and fall.

What to do

Hiking on CDT trail segments: Several dispersed camping areas provide direct access to the Continental Divide Trail. At Sapillo Dispersed Camping Area, hikers can explore the original branch of the CDT. As one camper notes, "Sapillo Creek lies straddling the original branch of the CDT. This is a free, national forest dispersed site with a couple pit toilets and very few other amenities, no cell signal either."

Fishing at Bear Canyon Reservoir: Located about 15 miles from Mimbres, this small lake offers catfish, largemouth bass, and trout fishing opportunities. A visitor to Bear Canyon Reservoir shared: "Great little lake, camping is free. 14 day limit. Lots of fish. Catfish, LMB, Trout."

Explore unique rock formations: About 30 miles southwest of Mimbres, campers can explore unusual volcanic rock formations. One visitor to City of Rocks State Park Campground described the experience: "You can spend hours exploring all the rocks. With reservations you can get a spot with power but they are closer together. We were very happy with the great place we had."

What campers like

Stargazing opportunities: The dark skies in the Gila National Forest region provide excellent stargazing. At Upper Gallinas Campground, a camper shared: "Just a great free place to pull off for the night. Outhouses and trash cans available, but that's it. Countless spots to chose from. Pack it and pack out. We were the only ones there for two nights. It was super quiet and the stars at night were amazing."

Private campsites: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Mimbres offer well-spaced sites. At Rose Valley RV Ranch, a visitor noted: "The sites are huge and feel very private, offering a little fenced in, personal yard at most sites. The bathrooms were very clean and also private feeling."

Cooler temperatures: The higher elevation provides relief from summer desert heat. One camper at Sapillo Group Area Campground observed: "It is cooler here so it was a nice respite from the heat of the desert. Trees provide shade no matter which spot you choose."

What you should know

Seasonal closures affect access: Many campgrounds in the area close during winter months. A visitor to Railroad Canyon Campground noted: "The four campgrounds in this area (Iron Creek, Railroad Canyon, Upper and Lower Gallinas) are all closed in December 2021. Perhaps just for the season. Contact NFS for status."

Limited cell service: Most dog-friendly campgrounds near Mimbres have no cell coverage. According to one camper at Sapillo Group Area: "Keep in mind zero cell service." Another visitor added: "No cell signal with Verizon."

High winds can be challenging: The region experiences significant wind, especially in spring. A visitor to City of Rocks State Park observed: "Very unique landscape, great campsites but wow the wind was too much. We had friends go in spring who said it was windy and we went in mid May and it was the same story."

Tips for camping with families

ATV-friendly options for kids: Some dispersed camping areas permit off-road vehicles on designated trails. A visitor to Sapillo Dispersed Camping Area shared: "Lots of easy trails to ride around on with our mini bikes. Plenty of space to set up camp with 2 families and a few smaller tents."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The region offers chances to see native species. When camping at dog-friendly locations near Mimbres, maintain awareness of wildlife. One camper cautioned: "We almost stepped on a camouflage rattlesnake, the bees take over the drinking water (if you turn it slowly, they don't seem to be bothered)."

Consider cabins for multi-generational trips: Silver City KOA, located about 20 miles from Mimbres, offers alternative accommodations. One visitor reported: "Friendly staff, great area. Campgrounds clean. KOA Kabin was better than I expected. Wi-Fi password available. TV in cabin, heated, toilet and shower. Great place to stay whether just passing through, or staying awhile."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: For RVers looking for dog-friendly campgrounds near Mimbres, carefully evaluate site access. A visitor to Manzanos RV Park advised: "Our site was a pull through but was too tight with other sites to actually pull our 33 ft trailer and truck through. We had to back out. Park navigation a bit tight for big rigs. Not impossible just a bit of a nail brighter."

Hookup availability varies: While several campgrounds offer full hookups, not all sites are created equal. At Silver City RV Park, a camper noted: "Small but well run campground, perfect for resupply. You might want to go to a laundromat rather than use the onsite laundry. Nighttime was very quiet."

Full-time residents impact experience: Some parks primarily serve long-term residents. A visitor to Mountain Spirits RV Park reported: "Park was almost full and every unit there occupied by local workers who live full time in their RV. We were the only campers on our way to Gila Cliff dwellings."
