Cherry Creek Campground

Within Gila National Forest, Cherry Creek Campground provides drive-in access to approximately 10 sites tucked among tall pines. The US Forest Service manages this first-come, first-served facility, which accommodates RVs up to 17 feet and welcomes tent campers seeking higher elevation camping near Silver City.

Each site includes concrete picnic tables and fire rings, with vault toilets and trash service maintained throughout the camping area. Sites sit relatively close together with limited privacy screening between them. The campground runs alongside the road, though traffic remains light according to campers. Creek access varies seasonally—flowing during winter snow melt and spring runoff but often dry by midsummer.

Access requires navigating a rough road that can become challenging during wet conditions, with the creek occasionally running over the roadway. Vidalia S. notes "clean well-maintained vault toilets" and mentions tree encounters are common for larger rigs due to tight maneuvering space. Cell service reaches the campground, and an informal quarter-mile trail extends from the north end past the restrooms.

Campers looking for full hookups might consider McMillan Campground less than a mile northeast.

Guests frequently mentioned the scenic mountain setting with tall pines, clean facilities, and concrete amenities. Some visitors expressed disappointment with site proximity and noise from both road traffic and other campers.

Great free spot

We had a great experience. There were a few other people but not crowded at all. Level spot and pretty quiet. You can hear some cars drive by but nothing crazy. 10/10 would stay again!

Beautiful site in the tall pines

Beautiful location in the tall pines. Sites were well spaced but little privacy, and close to the road which was not busy at all. Picnic table and fire ring at each site. Clean well-maintained vault toilets. We were there in the winter and there had been some rain and snow melt, and the creek was running over the road, but still crossable even in our Transit van. The sites themselves are a little small with lots of trees and you can see where many larger campers and RVs seem to have had a tree encounter. The drive up from Silver City was stunning.

Great camp ground

The camp site had nice spacing , great environment and the views are nice . My only complaint would have to be that it’s pretty close to the Main Street so you will hear some cars passing by but other than that, it’s a great place to camp

Has lots of potential but . . .

We tent camped at Cherry Creek campground in late July 2023. We arrived about 4pm on a Saturday and there were like 2 sites available. First come, first serve, no fee, but a ranger told me that could change soon. Lots of nice tall pines. The creek was dry. Very scenic valley. There’s a short, informal trail at the north end of the campground past the bathroom. The trail goes about 0.25 miles out; so 0.5 mile round trip. A nice evening or morning stroll or both. But…there was a big group next to us that partied loud and late—with a generator that lit up their site, and ours. Oh well! At least they were enjoying the outdoors like we were, I think.

A little too close for comfort

The campsites are pretty close together but otherwise it is a great place to getaway from the summer heat. The bathroom was clean and trash cans were maintained. Beautiful drive.

One of my favorites

Nice campground with about 10 sites. With concrete picnic tables, and a fire ring. Vault toilets, hiking trails, and with cell signal. No hookups. Curative camping at its finest
