About a mile off NM-35 on a gravel road, Sapillo Dispersed Camping Area sits within Gila National Forest at no cost to campers. The access road handles big rigs without difficulty, and the sites themselves are level with fire pits and picnic tables. No reservations are needed. Vault toilets and trash bins are on-site, which puts this spot a step above typical dispersed camping.
Tree cover is consistent throughout the area. "Trees provide shade no matter which spot you choose," notes Alisa P., and campers with hammocks will find plenty of anchor points. The Continental Divide Trail runs through the area along Sapillo Creek, giving hikers a direct route into the surrounding forest. ATV and UTV use is common, particularly on weekends and through summer, so expect engine noise during daylight hours. Evenings tend to quiet down considerably. No cell signal reaches the site on any major carrier.
Lake Roberts is a short drive north for fishing, and general stores in both directions along NM-35 handle basic resupply. Firewood is typically available on-site from Forest Service cleanup work, so there is usually no need to haul your own. Campers with dogs can bring them along without restriction. Those planning a visit in summer should expect company; shoulder seasons and winter see far lighter use.
Description
This is a nice shady campground under ponderosa pines. Sapillo is an undeveloped campground under ponderosa pine and is a favorite of group campers. For any large group, we recommend this large campground.
