Baker's Acres Campground and Sea Pirate Campground feature family-friendly facilities within 15 miles of Long Beach Island beaches. The region includes several established campgrounds with wooded sites that offer varying levels of amenities, from basic tent camping to fully-equipped glamping accommodations. Lots to see and do within a 30-minute drive depending on traffic," noted one visitor about Sea Pirate Campground. Summer months bring higher demand and often require advance reservations, particularly for holiday weekends. Water pressure can fluctuate at some facilities during peak usage times, and insects can be prevalent in wooded areas, especially near water features.

The developed campgrounds typically offer amenities such as swimming pools, playgrounds, game rooms, and scheduled activities, making them popular with families seeking recreational options. According to one camper, "We liked the interesting vignettes they created around the campground as well as the goldfish pond near the office and store." Sites with mature shade trees receive positive mentions in reviews, providing relief during hot summer months. Many campgrounds maintain a traditional, rustic camping atmosphere while still offering modern conveniences. Proximity to beaches and boardwalks on Long Beach Island represents a significant draw for visitors, with driving times ranging from 10-40 minutes depending on traffic and location.

      Lowe's - W Windsor

Upscale Parking Paradise at This Home Fixer-Upper

Located just off US Route 1 in the upscale Princeton area, this spacious Lowe's serves up a surprisingly pleasant patch of pavement for weary road warriors looking to catch some shut-eye. Set back roughly 80 yards from the highway, this big blue home improvement retailer offers a generously sized parking lot with relatively manageable traffic, good maneuverability and a quieter atmosphere than you might expect from such a busy suburban retail corridor. The western and southern edges of the lot are particularly appealing for an overnight stay, and with Trader Joe's, Starbucks and several other retailers nearby, convenience certainly isn't in short supply. Better yet, the store management was friendly and accommodating when we called ahead to arrange our overnight visit.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spacious, paved parking lot with plenty of room to maneuver larger rigs; (2) Convenient access to US Route 1 and nearby I-95; (3) Western and southern parking areas offer quieter spots away from the busiest customer traffic; (4) Excellent nearby conveniences, including Trader Joe's, Starbucks and several dining options; and (5) Friendly store management that welcomed our overnight stay, plus surprisingly good opportunities for outdoor recreation nearby.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) Some daytime retail traffic and occasional road noise, although nothing terribly disruptive; (2) No RV hookups, dump station or dedicated overnight camping facilities; (3) Parking areas closest to the store can become crowded during business hours; (4) Limited greenery and little of the scenery you'd expect from a traditional campground; and (5) While the overnight experience was excellent, this is still a commercial parking lot rather than a destination for an extended stay.

      Happy Overnighting!

      Colonial Meadows Family Campground

      Great park

Many long term seasonal sites. Good community. Large shower house good and clean . Pool. Game room. Off leash dog park. Wooded/shady sites or no shade sunny sites. Lots of area to walk or play. Large field, basketball couture, frisky golf, play area and laundry room. We were here all summer (June-october). Lots to do in the area. Good food nearby. Ocean city 10 minutes away.

      Ocean View Resort Campground

One of the best campgrounds I have ever stayed in

This is one of the largest, if not the largest, campgrounds in Southern New Jersey. While on the pricier side, everything is top-notch. The roads are all paved, and not gravel (I hate trying to sleep and listening to the sound of stones grating together). The sites are more spacious than most campgrounds, so it doesn't seem so crowded. The bathrooms are all modern and spotless. There are numerous bathrooms which means most sites have one nearby. They do charge a quarter for showers to encourage water conservation and donate the money to conservation causes. The pool is large, as is the lake. Both are well-maintained. The camp store is enormous and is really nice and well-stocked with everything one might need from food to pool and beach stuff to camping supplies and equipment. There is a nice cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. The camp store has a lending library of books and DVDs. There are numerous activities that appear to be well-run, The grounds are shaded with many trees for a great wooded campground feel. The campground is so large that it has an internal shuttle with stations scattered about to help people go between the various important sites such as at the pool, the lake and the store. I found other campers, particularly the seasonals, to be more friendly than other campgrounds at the shore. This requires constant tree care including removing dead trees and branches which they do regularly. The staff is friendly and well-trained. I was in a tent, and when a rare October nor'easter came through, I was offered the opportunity to use a cabin free-of-charge. Fortunately my tent and equipment made it through days of rain and high winds just fine . On my first stay in May, I had to run my dog back to Baltimore towards the end of my trip where he was sadly diagnosed with incurable metastatic cancer. When I returned, I was late and unable to check out by 11, but they allowed me to take as much time as needed to clear the site, as nobody was staying there the next day, which was deeply appreciated - I was an emotional wreck. Oh, and I found the complimentary Wi-Fi to be a great service, and sufficiently fast to allow me to stream ultra-high-definition movies at my site - Most campgrounds charge extra for less-than-good service - a lot more. I find that a big bonus. Overall, I LOVE this campground and highly recommend it.

This campground is part of the Wharton State Forest and has several campgrounds in the area. Great wooded sites right on a lake. Pretty good separation between sites with good tree separation between sites. Some road noise not overly affecting site.

Don’t go unless you want harassment

My check in was for 8-6-2026, and bc I’m a new driver and wanted to beat traffic I got there early (7am) so I sit there waiting till check in time. When suddenly the park police show up. He’s accusing me of camping over night there. I told him simply I wasn’t and where I was night prior (would never sleep somewhere without permission). So we go to the store to kill time before we check in. Come back for Check in and the whole staff in just the office alone were so arrogant and cold to my mom and I, leaving rude comments to us and not only where they like that but the staff outside the office was acting like that alongside the rangers and park police. They would watch us the whole visit in the distance parking there cars a little ways watching everything we did, even driving by slowly a bunch of times in just an hour alone. My mom and I couldn’t do anything with out them showing up 2 mins later. Example we were walking our dog enjoying our time(trying to) and all of a sudden one of the office ladies pulls up right in front of us speeding, parks their car, gets out and walks a distance from us standing there and taking pictures of us…. For walking our dog who’s on a leash and didn’t even do anything. The whole trip we felt uncomfortable and unwanted and to find out they police when we were going on walks where coming up to campers near us bribing them with free firewood to get any information on use (told to us by other camper). I paid a lot of money to be harassed and followed the whole time. We never did anything we abide by every rule and keep to ourselves everywhere we go. They even made my mother cry…

      Brendan Byrne State Forest

      Beautiful campground, loud campers

Beautiful campground but made the mistake of going on a holiday weekend, the campgrounds next to us were screaming and blasting music all day and throughout the night so we ended up leaving early. A beautiful campground when there aren’t noisy capers ruining it.

      Turkey Swamp Park

      Really nice campground

Stayed three nights in a tent and enjoyed it very much. Sites have electrical hookups, shared water connections, large picnic table, and fire ring with adjustable grate. Electrical and water are at the outer edge of each site so you might want an extension cord and/or hose. Bathrooms are clean; showers have separate stalls but they’re clustered together (not the most private). There are hiking and biking trails, a lake, and archery park. Staff are friendly. Office is open through 9pm, and firewood, ice, and bait for fishing are available. Site C3 is in an okay spot; it’s close to the bathroom and laundry room, but also right next to the playground. We were able to visit the beach; easy 25 minute drive to Asbury Park.

Atsion Family Camp — Wharton State Forest

      Not my vibe

I personally did not like this campsite. First of all, our site tag was leftover from SEPTEMBER. Did no one look at any of these sites and leave someone else’s registration posted there for almost a year? Wild. Our campsite had trash leftover from previous campers. The whole campground was loud - from other campers to just the sounds from the nearby road. If you are looking for peace it is NOT here. If you’re looking to have loud music time all night with no repercussions as your kids ride around yelling and carrying on past midnight then you’ll have a blast. The pros of this campsite was supposed to be the access to Lake Atsion but we were turned away at the gate at 12:30 as they stated they were at capacity. Checking into our campsite they specifically asked if we would be utilizing the recreation area so we would have a pass for entry, but that’s seemingly not in their logistical headcount. I would not visit here again.

    Guide to Manahawkin

Camping near Manahawkin, New Jersey offers diverse options from primitive forest campsites to full-service RV resorts within the sandy Pine Barrens ecosystem. The region receives approximately 46 inches of rainfall annually, creating a unique coastal-woodland environment that can become sandy and muddy during wet periods. Elevations remain relatively flat throughout the area, making navigation easier for novice hikers but requiring attention to drainage during rainy seasons.

    What to do

River adventures: kayaking and tubing along the Wading River provides a refreshing summer activity near several campgrounds. At Wading Pines Camping Resort, campers appreciate the river access: "You can tube down the river from one end of camp to the other," notes Layne, while another camper recommends "Have someone drop you off at Hawkins Bridge and float down to the campground. A little over 2 hour ride."

Wildlife watching in the pinelands: The Pine Barrens ecosystem supports unique wildlife viewing opportunities. Bass River State Forest offers sightings during trail walks. "We walked and explored, kayaked, and sang by the fire," shares Matthew H., while another visitor mentioned, "We saw deer every time we walked on it" when describing the nature trails at Baker's Acres.

Lake activities and fishing: Multiple campgrounds feature lake access with fishing opportunities. At Chestnut Lake, visitors report "good fishing" and "beautiful pool" amenities. Jeff J. describes Bass River State Forest as having "bathrooms and showers 24/7. The camp ground area is very large and signed extremely well making finding your campsite easy."

    What campers like

Large, private campsites: Many campgrounds in the Wharton and Bass River areas provide spacious camping areas. Brendan Byrne State Forest receives praise for site size: "The sites are a great size and many are set back enough that you have privacy," reports Maggie H. Another camper describes it as having "sites are large and well laid out. Bathhouse / showers were okay, but clean and in good repair."

Sandy terrain benefits: The region's sandy soil creates comfortable tent camping surfaces. A Bass River visitor noted, "The ground is always very soft and sandy, which makes for comfortable sleeping. It's noticeably NOT rocky. It also means that there's always plenty of kindling available for collecting."

Clean facilities: Sea Pirate Campground maintains well-kept amenities according to reviews: "Bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. They had several activities and sent text reminders of what was going on," writes Gennifer K. Another visitor adds, "The heated swimming pool was large and the water crystal clear."

    What you should know

Insect preparedness essential: Ticks and mosquitoes can be problematic, especially at certain campgrounds. At Godfrey Bridge, a camper warned, "We were getting these ticks just setting up and sitting at the campsites," while another stated "Beautiful campground but unfortunately it is unusable due to tick infestation." Multiple reviewers mention bringing repellent.

Water pressure fluctuations: Several campgrounds experience variable water pressure. At Sea Pirate Campground, one camper reported, "extremely low water pressure, often below 20 PSI. It was so low at times, that we couldn't take showers or flush the toilet."

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate April through October, with varying seasonal challenges. A camper at Bass River noted, "There were a lot of ticks when we stayed in May so keep that in mind." Atlantic Shore Pines Campground reviews indicate October camping can be quieter: "Came the weekend before the real Halloween, and the grounds were pretty deserted."

    Tips for camping with families

Activity-centered campground selection: Families appreciate campgrounds with structured programs. Baker's Acres Campground offers regular activities: "We enjoyed the scavenger hunt and Saturday night entertainment. There were very few golf carts and all the cars drove cautiously. We felt our daughter was safe to ride her bike," reports Becca U.

Proximity to attractions: Consider drive times to beaches and local attractions. One visitor mentioned, "We borrowed beach tags from the camp store for a fee and headed to the Brant Beach section of LBI," while another noted Baker's Acres is "Close to LBI and a short drive to Smithville, I highly recommend!"

Bathhouse locations: When camping with children, check bathroom proximity. A Baker's Acres camper mentioned, "Our campsite was a good 7 minute walk from the nearest bathroom which was a bit far so a small bathhouse near the nature trail would have been appreciated." Many state forest campgrounds have more limited facilities.

    Tips from RVers

Site levelness and access: Several campgrounds have challenging site access for larger rigs. At Baker's Acres, one RVer noted, "Backing my rig into the site, and exiting, was a bit challenging due to the angle and size of the service road but we managed well enough." Atlantic Shore Pines Campground received praise: "The site we had was a level pull-thru with 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable. It was easy to pull in and can accommodate larger rigs."

Surface considerations: The sandy terrain affects RV setup and cleanliness. "Sites are level and somewhat sandy (You're in the Pine Barrens, it should be expected)," explains one Baker's Acres reviewer, while another at Atlantic Shore notes, "Sites are packed sand so be prepared with a good broom because it tracks everywhere."

Hookup quality verification: Check specific sites for reliable utilities. "The hook-ups were all well-maintained and worked fine," reports one Sea Pirate camper, while another mentions issues: "My site was not very level and took a few tries to get levelled, but everything else made up for it."
