Summer temperatures average 80-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer more comfortable camping conditions between 60-75°F. The acidic soil produces a distinctive environment where tent campers will encounter cedar-stained streams and sandy campsites throughout the region.

Hiking the Batona Trail: This 50-mile marked trail passes through multiple campgrounds and provides access to backcountry sites. At Goshen Pond Campground, "Our site was right next to the Mullica River, and had excellent views if you walked just a couple steps from the tent," says Anna D.
What campers like
Secluded camping options: Many tent sites in the Pine Barrens offer privacy away from crowds. At Batona Campground, "While the individual campsites appear to be somewhat close together and the campground area is very open, there were few other campers during our visit, and privacy was not an issue," reports Brittany L.
Direct trail access: Several campgrounds provide immediate access to hiking trails. "Best part of this campground is trailheads begin directly from campsites. Trails vary in length but all are flat and easily accessible," explains meghan G. about Batona Campground.
Wild blueberries: Summer campers can forage for wild blueberries at certain backcountry sites. "This campground is hike-in or boat-in only, no car access. We camped here for one night on an overnight loop in Wharton State Forest. Wild blueberries abound during summer months!" notes Rebecca S. about Mullica River Campground.
What you should know
High tick and chigger activity: Pine Barrens campers should perform regular checks for ticks and chiggers, especially in warmer months. At Goshen Pond Campground, a camper advises, "Great sites, great trails, lots of hiking and off road trails for dirt bike/atv/ trucks. Pretty good boating/ fishing. Just gotta check often for chiggers and ticks."
Sandy access roads: Vehicle access to some tent camping areas requires navigating sand roads. "The road into the campground is about 1 mile of loose sand. It can be accessed by a standard vehicle," explains a Batona Campground visitor.
Weekend crowding: Many sites experience significantly different conditions between weekdays and weekends. At Abbot Sawmill, a camper notes it feels "Close to the main roads but feels remote," highlighting the contrast between accessibility and seclusion.
Tips for camping with families
Beach options nearby: Families camping near Dennis can combine tent camping with beach excursions. At Shellbay Campgrounds, "I remember my excitement to go camping, meet other kids at the campground, and have plenty of things to do close by (beach, shopping, swimming pool)," remembers Alyssa D.
Seasonal activities: Family-friendly campgrounds often offer structured activities during peak seasons. Suzi S. shares about Shellbay, "Enjoy evenings by a campfire and days by the pool or at the beach. The family owned campground makes you feel a home away from home from May - October 1."
Noise considerations: Family groups should consider proximity to other campers, especially on busy weekends. Christopher E. notes about tent camping at Shellbay, "The tent sites were close together and since it was Labor Day weekend it was pretty full. There were a lot of things for kids to do but it was not the kind of camp ground for peace and quiet."
Tips from RVers
Site limitations: Most Pine Barrens campgrounds have restrictions on RV size and limited hookups. At Batona Campground, "Site are suitable for tents or small campers. The unpaved road into the site is narrow and tree lined. A larger RV would not fit," advises a camper.
Seasonal access: RV campers should note that most facilities operate on a limited seasonal schedule. Red Wing Lakes has "Season camped for 2 years there. Swimming lake catch and release lake sells wood has bath houses, electric, water and sewer hookups," according to Barry G.
Alternative RV options: For full-hookup camping near Dennis beaches, consider private campgrounds instead of state forest sites. "Looking for a trip to the Jersey shore (near Stone Harbor, Avalon, Wildwood, Cape May, & more) - look no further than Shellbay Camping Resort. Great sites for camping with electric and water, seasonal sites with water, electric and sewer hookups," recommends a Shellbay visitor.
