Sauk River City Park

Anglers and families find multiple recreation options at Sauk River City Park, a municipal campground that doubles as the town's main community space. The facility sits directly along the Sauk River in Melrose, with grassy sites that include picnic tables and fire rings. Electric and water hookups serve RV campers, while tent sites cost $10 per night using an honor-system payment box.

The campground operates within an active city park featuring basketball courts, sand volleyball, horseshoe pits, disc golf, and multiple ball fields. "Large riverfront site with picnic table and fire ring provided," notes Tori K., though she mentions the park can get busy during daytime hours. Recent facility upgrades include new restrooms with showers, and campers report feeling safe with the sound of flowing water nearby.

Sites sit close together on recently mowed grass that can become muddy after rain. The location puts stores and a laundromat within walking distance of camp. Some visitors find the exposed layout and daytime park activity too crowded for their preferences. For those wanting more seclusion, Birch Lakes State Forest Campground offers a quieter forest setting six miles north.

Guests frequently mentioned excellent facilities with new restrooms, electrical hookups, and abundant family amenities. A common theme was the riverfront location and recreational activities, though some noted sites can feel crowded and exposed during busy periods.

Riverfront

Large riverfront site with picnic table and fire ring provided. Campground is on a city park so there were lots of amenities: Fishing, horseshoe pits, basketball court, sand volleyball court, disc golf, soccer fields, softball fields, picnic pavilions. Campground has a restroom with showers. Keep in mind it is a public park so it can get a little busy during the day.

Lovely, new, accommodations in small town

Rolled up in the middle of the night. $10 cash in the box for a tent site. Clean bathroom with shower. Felt safe and fell asleep quickly with the sound of the creek next to our site. Would definitely stay again.

Exposed

We arrived, checked it out and decided to leave. The grassy sites had recently been mowed, but were very muddy and right on top of each other. Lots of people fishing. We just felt exposed. Drive to Birch Lake State Forest instead.

Update of website needed

The linked website says this is a year round park. Called to make sure payment could be done after 5, which is when I found out that it’s in fact not open year round, even without hookups.
