    Poncho's Pond RV Park

    Loved It!

This park is a very nice RV park. All 257 sites are full hook-up (with cable), level, and have paved patios and for a $2 up charge you can get a paved site. Our site was super long (over 100’) and had a nice view of the large pond. There is pretty good separation between sites and on one side of us were large bushes that added privacy from our neighbors and the adjacent pathway. There are tent sites set off along one area of the park near the bathrooms. There are a few trees among the tent sites but they are not very private and located near the garbage dumpsters/recycle bins and on a main exit thoroughfare. There are also three “haciendas” for rent.

One of my favorite features of the campground was the fitness center. Poncho and his wife are triathletes so the facility is top notch with weight machines, free weights, cycles, treadmills, elliptical, medicine balls, and lots of bands. There are three heated pool on the property – two outdoor and one indoor with and two spas. Since we were there in mid-October the outdoor pools were closed but the indoor hot tub and pool were open (albeit, super crowded on the weekend with kids). There are two laundry rooms and three bathrooms that are very modern and clean. One of the cable television stations displays security camera footage around the property which was nice because I could see how full the laundry was before carrying all my stuff there. There is a game room for kids, playground, shuffleboard, and a clubhouse. There is a stocked pond on the property but it is only for kids (17 and under) to fish in. Cable television yielded 55 channels and WiFi was available at our site with a decent signal. The campground is very well-maintained with nicely mowed grass. The grounds crew was always working but they were not annoying with constant loud machines. There is a railroad track that runs behind the park but it does not get a lot of use so the noise was not too bad. If you don’t want to be near the tracks, ask for a site away from the south side of the park. There is an off-leash dog park but it really is too small and narrow for big dogs.

The campground is very convenient to lots of shopping and restaurants and within walking distance of a McDonalds, fruit market, drug store and grocery. Downtown Ludington is only about five minutes away which has a cute downtown with shopping, galleries, and restaurants. Ludington State Park is about 15 minutes away and has miles and miles of hiking trails and beach access. There is also a city park downtown which is along Lake Michigan with beach access and lots of room for a nice walk (but dogs are not allowed). The office staff was super helpful pointed out places to hike and things to do for the weekend. Also loved that they gave us a choice of sites and let us drive around the campground (in their golf cart) and pick out the one we wanted.

We camped here in an RV and really couldn’t find anything we didn’t like about it. New customers get a 10% discount and during our stay we fell into low season and nightly rates were discounted 50%. So for $28/night we got a really nice site with lots of amenities in a great location. If you are looking for a nice RV park at a great price near a nice coastal Michigan town, give this place a try.

    Holiday Camping Resort

    We love Holiday Camping Resort

This will be our third year camping at Holiday Camping Resort. Just a few miles west of US 31. It’s a hilly white pine forest. With several cabins, many tent sites, group campsites and large staggered full hook-up campsite. Joanie (the owner) operates a very nice campground and usually has organized activities, but because of the pandemic she hasn't been able to do them in 2020 and who knows about 2021. This campground reminds me of our beautiful Michigan state parks, but with full hookups. There is a very nice swimming pool, playground and basketball half court for the kids and a small dog run. The campground is close to the small town of Stoney Lake (with a nice little city park on Stoney Lake) there you can swim or launch your kayak, The Hart - Montague bike trail, Country Dairy and Lewis Farms are a few miles away. It’s about a 35 minute drive to Silver Lake.

    Chinook Camping

    Fun tubing down the river

This is a great campground for tubing down the river. They rent the tubes right at the campground, take you up river, and then you get out of the river back at the campground. They have a pool, arcade, food window, Restaurant(although it was closed when we were there), and a convenience store right across the street. Our dislikes were they have very narrow roads that were very difficult to maneuver a large trailer. Lots were smaller and hard to back into. And no full hook up sites. We also found the bathrooms to be very disgusting. Very dirty and not kept up.

    Stony Haven Campground & Cabins

    Peaceful

This campground is peaceful. Nice sites, even a place for rustic camping. Rustic camping you hike up the road, no cars are allowed to sites. Perfect!!! Full hook ups, 3 50 amp sites. Others are 30 amp.
Tent camping has platforms, so your tent is off the ground. Cabins are available for rent.
There is a playground, for the young ones. Rental of bikes, tubing, row boats and canoes are right at the campground. Beach access across street.
The campground is the older type, but the quiet, and professional care you get is awesome!!! This place is a must visit campground. Family feeling here. Vet friendly. Bathroom house is cleaned perfectly every day. Always clean. Day excursions, to see are, sand dunes, ludington, etc. then after the fun, come back to a peaceful evening, beside the fire. Each site has a fire ring.
    Peaceful!!!
Just FYI. No drinking of alcohol is allowed. Perfect for my family, but just FYI.
    Camp peacefully!!!

    Stony Haven Campground & Cabins

Great fun was had by all

We had a large family camp weekend at Stony Haven. We had 5 sites (21-25) pack to capacity with 32 people.  They owners allowed use to squeeze in a few extra bodies more than their policies specify.

They offer so much at the campground!! We rented bikes and tubes, but they also rent canoes & kayaks (including launch & pickup), pedal cars, yard games and wifi hotspots.  They have a nice playground with swings, a sandbox, slide and climbers.  Adjacent to the playground is a large pavilion with charcoal grills and a volleyball quart.

The tent sites were very nice. Well maintained, each with their own fire ring, a picnic table,  water spickets and electric.  They also have full hookup sites for RVs, rustic sites and mini cabins.

There is a walking path around the back of the campground. It cuts through the woods and past a pond.  My kids (ages 1.5, 3, 5,& 6) spent hours at the pond catching frogs.

The bathrooms were clean and checked several times a day. There were public bathrooms with a few stalls and a shower, but there were also 2 private bathrooms with showers, one of which was handicap/family.  There were 2 additional private shower rooms.  They also have a laundry facility ON SITE!!!!  This came in very handy when I opened up my canvas hammock and found mold.

There is access to Stony Lake across the street and that connects to Lake Michigan.  There was an awesome county beach 5 min down the road on Lake Michigan.  It was right where the big lake meets the outlet for Stony Lake, Benona County Park. When they weren't at the pond my kids were playing in the sand and swimming at the beach.  I love little outlets like this because they are usually shallower and warmer than the big lake and are great for my littles.

They offer a short worship service on Sunday mornings for all that wish to participate.

They owners were so sweet and easy going. We called several times to adjust our reservation right up to the day before and they gracefully tolerated our shuffling and were able to accommodate us. They even allowed us to leave our packed trailer at the site while we spent the afternoon at the beach after checkout.  We came back to the site ate, used the bathroom, hooked up the trailer and took off for home.

Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park

    Location is perfect!

Campsite is located 2 miles from downtown Pentwater, adorable small town on the water. Mears state park is 2 miles from the campground as well, Lake Michigan beaches. The playground on the beach is perfect for younger kids. There is a pavilion that serves hot food and ice cream ( hot food ends at 5pm/ ice cream till sunset.) Our kids loved walking in town and heading to the beach.

With that said, there is plenty to do at the campground . Outdoor pool, AJs (putt- putt golf, arcade, playground, go-karts) extra fee for AJs but reasonable priced, basketball court, volleyball court, small baseball diamond, tennis table, general store, shower house by pool ( very clean), private bonfire pits ( most campsites).

Seasonal’s were very friendly and helpful with local things to do. RV camp, Tent camp, or tent cabin.

Dump station available, firewood for sale, ice for sale, general store has several camping items, 15 minutes away is meijer in ludington. 2 minutes away gas station 2 minutes to Lake Michigan beaches 2 minutes to Pentwater downtown shopping

    Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness

Quiet, off-grid, close to the dunes

The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness is dispersed camping, and nearby is Lake Michigan Campground with tent and dry rv camping. We stayed there and almost had the whole place to ourselves.

Be warned- there is no cell service or wifi, so plan ahead and let people know you won’t be reachable. And then enjoy being disconnected :)

The campsites were big and beneath mature trees for max shade and privacy. There’s a small bath house with flushing toilets. No hook ups or electricity of any sort. Camp hosts sold ice and firewood and there was potable water.

The dunes are a quick walk and well worth it. There is a trail from the campground right down to the beach. We hiked all day and lounged on the beach. Dogs are welcome on-leash.

Ranger Review: Wonderful OOFOS 00MG Fibre Shoes at Tippy Dam Campground

We sought out a campground near some good hiking. My feet need to be tired to review the Oofos 00mg fibre shoes. Tippy Dam Campground is less than 20 minutes from the Manistee River Trailhead, which is a beautiful hiking trail.

    Campground review:

The campground owner was out when we arrived but a helpful lady told us to grab a campsite and he would find us. With only one other camper, and a handful of long term campers, finding a site was easy. Most of the sites have electric but we went to the back to get a spot without electric. We drove straight in and set up camp. Pretty soon the owner came by and talked for a bit while confirming our site. The campground fills up in the late summer fishing season. This weekend is the start of his busy time. For now, we will enjoy the quiet.

The sites are large with some even having grass for tents. The vault toilets could use some updating. Walking around camp uncovered a dumpster for garbage near the front. A fish cleaning station has extra plastic tubs ready to use. It wasn’t until we were leaving that we found a water source. A map of the campground would help locate resources and even campsites. Another family drove through looking for their site but left in confusion - numbers on the sites are hard to find or just not there. One site flows into the next in the area without electric. With just one other camper, we didn’t need to worry about the site size.

Through the gate at the back of the campground is the Tippy River Dam. We walked down the long stairway to the water and watched a heron doing its own hunt for dinner as a few people tried their luck fishing. A neighboring farm has some horses and adventurous chickens. The roosters fluttered over the fence and spent time searching out food in the campground. My dog was occupied by the movements of the beautiful horses. Evening brought the sound of guns - I’m guessing that a target range is nearby. A short drive over to the Manistee River Trail on the following morning and we got in a full day of hiking. This was a decent stay in the off-season and seems popular with fishermen in season.

    Product review:

As a Dyrt Ranger, sometimes I get products to review. I was fortunate to be sent some Oofos 00mg fibre shoes to try out. Oofos just released these men’s shoes in August. This expands their line of sandals. These are recovery footwear - claiming to reduce the load by 37%. I don’t know how to measure that but my feet are in heaven wearing them.

We hiked 9 miles on the nearby Manistee River trail and our feet were ready for some love. Dakota, my dog, tried out the Oofos but I quickly commandeered them. The heels are thick so it took a bit of getting used to. If almost felt like my toes were hanging off into the shoe. However, I adjusted quickly as my body weight brought my heels into line as they sank into the oofoam material. Wearing them around camp as we ate lunch gave my feet a breather. The thick strap held the shoes securely on to my feet. The breeze blew through the top fibre material of the shoe and felt wonderful. Walking around camp worked out perfectly. A moderate pace down the row of campsites was enough to feel the cushion. These aren’t shoes I would run around in but they are clouds to nestle in. I appreciate the way the fibre top helps hold the shoe on my feet but remain breathable. This made recovery time more comfortable. Normally I have issues with a narrow heal but the Oofos felt comfortable from the start and all the way through the rest of the day. Switching back to my hiking shoes for an evening walk with Dakota was an easy transition. I recovered quickly. My foot soles were ready for the hiking shoes and we took off into the woods for a walk. Oofos live up to their claims in helping me recover.

I’m LOVING the Oofos 00mg fibre shoes!

    Best Campground We've Stayed At!

A+ Campground! Free WiFi, larger sites, great staff, full hookups at the site and can accommodate anything from larger rvs (we have a 33ft. 5th wheel with slides) to tents, clean restroom facilities (if need them) and reasonable rates! This is a smaller campground so the sites tend to reserve quickly and there is an additional county park fee per day/night but it is well worth it! It's a short walk to Lake Michigan/beach and the campground is quiet and well kept.

    Lakeview Campsite

    Cozy, Quiet, Very friendly staff!!

Really cool rustic sites as well as full hookup sites for rv and a boat access to lake Hamlin that you can take right out to lake michigan. In a very convenient spot right in between ludington and Big Sable point lighthouse. Only downside is if you're staying in a tent the showers aren't updated so hopefully the owners get on that but that's it for the bad! This place was awesome and very cozy with nice access. Definitely going back again.

    Clean, good atmosphere

If you're looking for a nice family oriented car camping site this is it. Sites vary with full hookup to rustic. Cabins are available. On the river, beach is clean and picnic area is also clean and well maintained. Bathrooms are kept up well, individual shower rooms are nice. They do have a washer and dry for longer stays but only one unit so you may have to wait awhile. Heard they have plans to build a gas station and convience store. Which would be nice but, there is a gas station that is well stocked a few miles down the road. Reminds me of a KOA campground.

    Dunes Harbor Family Camp

If they have availability just book it!

I cannot overstate how well maintained and setup this campground is. Amenities galore, very friendly staff, and sites are well thought out. You cannot reserve individual campsites which is a bummer as not all sites are the same. The east side of the campground has the river and lots of mature trees for shade. The west side is nearly wide open to the sun. Only saplings trees that where planted when the campground was build in 2015. Their website has all the information you need so a couple of notable things that you won’t find there.

The whole place is clean. Very clean. They even pick up your garage from your campsite every day. The camp store is surprisingly well stocked with everything you could forget at home. And it’s clean (did I mention that?). If you purchase ice, firewood, or propane from the store they will deliver it to your site for free! Very nice touch. Also they have a lot of activities scheduled for the kids on a daily basis. They post the weekly schedule everywhere and the events are well run. You will never get bored staying here. Lastly this campground is quiet. After it gets dark about 10pm the whole campground seems to go to bed. I stayed over the 4th holiday weekend and the place was completely full and all you here is crickets. This is a huge plus in my family camping book.

I did a through investigation of all the sites for when we come back and found these to be the best for various reasons. But since you can’t reserve specific site you can request them. Here they are in no particular order.

    Paris Park

    4 days of camping

Quiet and safe campground. The staff is great, the campground has a transport service up river for tubing or canoeing.

    Bathrooms and showers are clean.

Wish more of the sites were full hookups, but I am guessing it's because of distance to river.

Also, it has a nice location to walk into the river and fish. A fish cleaning station near the river would be nice.

    Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness

    Best kept Secret

Great for the Backpacking novice. One of my favorite places when I want to camp off the Lake Michigan shore. A very short hike in if you want to stay on the beach. Also several Two-track sites for car and RV camping. Close to Hamlin lake for fishing and kayaking or for larger boats as well. Very Rustic. No utilities. But your neighbors will never see you running naked around the fire unless they happen to be driving by the two-track road.

    Hoffmaster State Park Campground

    Great campground with great facilities!

Hoffmaster State is a beautiful campground with great views and a very cool visitor center with a live animal exhibit featuring some of Michigan’s coolest native species! The campground is very large and is almost entirely covered by trees, providing great amounts of shade during the hottest parts of the year. Hoffmaster is a pretty clean campground featuring fire pits and picnic tables at most sites, however they do not have full hookup. The dump/fill station is clean and easy to maneuver. You do have to travel a little ways to get to the beach, but it is absolutely worth the travel once you arrive! Overall, Hoffmaster is a very cool state park campground that everyone should have on their list to visit!

    Hideaway Campground

    A favorite

Hideaway is one of my favorite campgrounds. We were on a tent site, which was kind of small, but the campground was great.

They offer both tent and RV sites ranging in from rustic to full hookup and cabins. The bathrooms and showers are very nice and cleaned daily. There is laundry on site. They have a full store on the grounds for all your camping needs. With a restuarant counter inside the store that serves breakfast-dinner and hand scooped ice cream you don't even need to bring a cooler.

Minutes from Silver Lake Sand Dunes and Little Saubel State Park this is a perfect location. If the sandy beach isn't your ideal vacation the park also features a full size inground pool and lounge deck.

Campers returning after dusk use a key code to open the front gate of this secure campground. Unlike camping at Silver Lake State Park, this location is quietly tucked off the main, very busy stretch of town.

    Brower Park Campground

    Beautiful County Park

Brower Park is a quiet campground with three separate areas with sites. They accommodate large RVs as well as smaller trailers and tents. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. Electricity and water hookup is included at each site. Our site was near the Muskegon River and was very peaceful. Bathrooms and showers were clean and easily accessible.

    Dunes Harbor Family Camp

    Tons of Fun!

I originally was a little bit wary of coming to this campground because I didn’t know if it would be great with our tent, but it was great! Our site was wooded for the most part and a decent size too, albeit on the smaller side. The tent sites and full-hookup camper sites are separate (but there were a couple campers and plenty of pop-ups in our area) and the tent sites are grassy/wooded and on the edge of the campground. All sites have electric and water. The campground itself is on a river/lake which was great for those who wanted to fish. There is an ice cream parlor, store, pool (so nice!), athletic field, activity/craft center, playground, and Gaga ball pit. This was great because everyone had something to do. From reading a book in a hammock to going down the water slide, no one was bored. I was a little disappointed that the hiking trail was not even a mile, but we took lots of walks around the campground. The silver lake sand dunes are nearby as well as a number of Lake Michigan beaches. The camp hosts were so friendly and the Christian environment was amazing! Very impressed with the cleanliness and modern facilities too (individual showers, brand new pool, etc.). Can’t wait to come back!

    Trailway Campground

    RV Camping

I’ve never stayed here, but my family has a cottage nearby so I visit all the time. The campground’s sites are close together, with electric and sewage hookups. Lots of RVs and large campers. No tents or small trailers. Toilets and showers onsite as well as a market. The campground is in the heart of Montague and right next to Montague Foods Grocery. Because it’s so close to everything, it can get pretty loud especially from car traffic on the road. It is also very close to Lake Michigan and it’s located on White River across the street from White Lake. I take it that a lot of people stay here for the whole summer and it’s not a very popular vacation spot. Overall, it’s a nice place to park an RV for the summer, but it’s not really a getaway, especially if you are looking to tent camp.

    Campers Paradise

    Conveniently located, no-frills campground

Don’t discount this campground, we found it did not live up to the angsty hype of the sour reviewers on google and Campendium. We had a very enjoyable and safe stay at Camper’s Paradise in Grand Haven.

Yes, the staff are very strict on the 5 MPH speed limit. But if you respect this rule, you’ll have a perfectly fine stay. Those who have kids or pets will probably find they like the enforced speed limit so their kids can play about without imminent danger.

And yes, the campground is not a quiet, silent getaway. A quick look at a map can tell you it is close to a highway. However, the road noise is not obnoxious and quickly drowns out as background noise. Anyone in a trailer won’t notice it. It’s mostly primitive campers and light sleepers who may need ear plugs. The advantage to its urban location is its proximity to Grand Haven Beach and Rosy Mound, both bike riding distance.

Bathhouses, though old, have been recently re-tiled and are cleaned daily.

RV spots are dirt, and nicely shaded. A fire ring and picnic table are provided at each spot.

Don’t get scared from the bad reviews. This campground was a welcome rescue when our other reservation fell through. Yes, it’s an urban campground and yes, the staff are vigilant about their rules. But none of this prevents having a good time enjoying the outdoors in Grand Haven.

White River RV Park & Campground

    Quiet Friendly Campground

We found this campground online looking for a place to hold our annual family camp out.  Staff was very helpful in making reservations and holding sites for our group.  We called in March for the 3rd weekend in July and were able to get all the sites we needed together along with cabins for those without access to campers.  Nice large level sites very helpful staff.  Very pleasant long weekend.  Reasonable checkout and check in times.  In at 3 PM  out by 1 PM.
