Mears State Park Campground

Mears State Park Campground, near Pentwater, Michigan, is a popular spot for those who love the beach and want to camp right by Lake Michigan. The sandy sites are just a stone's throw from the water, making it easy to enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing.

This campground offers essential amenities like electric hookups, clean bathrooms, and hot showers, which visitors appreciate after a day outdoors. Many campers have noted the tight spacing between sites, so if you’re bringing a big rig, be prepared for some maneuvering. As one camper put it, “It’s really more of a tailgate feel rather than camping experience,” but the friendly vibe and community spirit make up for it.

When you’re not lounging on the beach, you can take a leisurely stroll into Pentwater for some local eats or grab a drink at a nearby bar. The area is perfect for biking and exploring, with trails that lead you through beautiful scenery. If you’re looking for a beach-centric camping experience with a lively atmosphere, Mears State Park Campground is worth considering.

First time staying

It’s a little cramped making it a bit overwhelming but the sites are nice and kept.

Beutiful location for beach lovers.

The campground is located next the beach near the town of Pentwater. The location is beautiful and sandy with easy access from the paved road. They have internet but quite slowly due to the fact that many are connected. The spaces are a bit tight and it is not very easy to back up from the narrow alleys if you have a big rig. All campsites are equipped with electricity only. Bathrooms and showers are located in the buildings in several places. The one on the beach is directly from the campground.

Great beach

Love the setting practically on the beach. Fantastic public restrooms and showers that didn't run out of hot water.

Fall camping

Mears lake campground is located right on the beach of Lake Michigan. There are about 5 spots that have water views and the rest are sand dunes, to the lake but an easy climb.

All sites have a bonfire pit and picnic table

Sites are very tight! In the summer months it’s hard to even drive down the street. The fall is a little calmer, campsites are a little more spread out but the cement pads are very small.

Bath house on street two ( nice and clean) Bath house near the water closed in fall

Fire wood is sold up near the beach stands $6 bundle ( cash or Venmo)

The thing we love most about this campground is the easy walk into Pentwater. Brown bear is a good bar with good food.

Think Tailgating vs. Camping

Very very tight camp spots, some barely long enough. Tow vehicles protrude into the drive to hitch/unhitch. Cheek-by-jowl spacing with rigs, toads and tow vehicles parked anywhere and every where at odd angles. All campers we met were pleasant and often downright friendly to the point of inviting us strangers for dinner. This was a college game weekend, so it helped if you were supporting the same team. Excellent bath facilities, Friendly helpful staff. Just be prepared for tight spots! It’s really more of a tailgate feel rather than camping experience. Oh, and lots of dogs. Did I mention it’s really really tight? Great for beach lover’s. And dogs.😄

Not worth it

Go to the beach for the day, but don't camp here. The sites were on top of each other and there was no privacy. There was only one bathroom for the entire campground meaning that only 3 stalls were offered for all of the women. Because there is only one bathroom and it isn't in the middle of the campground, it is a long walk for most of the campers. The showers were nice, but the bathroom could use an upgrade.

All of the sites were sandy with no shade. Traveling on bike meant having few comfort items. We really could have used a tree or some other shade after a long day of touring, but there was no shade at the site or anywhere nearby. Most folks had awnings on their campers. I could see how having a camper or RV (or even a car) would make the experience more enjoyable, but still I would not choose to return here.

It is not a tent friendly site because the tent gets blown off the sand. Sandy sites make it difficult to stake down a tent. We went on a particularly windy day and the gear we had was not enough to hold down the tent. I ended up going to bed at 7:30pm just to keep the tent from blowing away.

There was wifi, but it hardly worked at the site. The beach was decent, but nothing any more impressive than anywhere else on the lake. If you have the opportunity to stay somewhere other than here, go there instead. I was shocked that so many people would pay so much for such a pathetic campground. If you are paying to stay at a Michigan State Park, find yourself a better one!

I intended on taking pictures, but was so unimpressed I completely forgot.

Camping right on Lake Michigan

Awesome location for camping, and is right on Lake Michigan. However, there is no grass and is pretty much all sand. As long as that doesn’t bother you, you will have a great time camping here.

Clean but tight.

Beautiful campground. Clean facilities and closely located to Lake Michigan. Only drawback was how close the sites were to each other.

Great Campground, but crowded when full

This is a great campground. You can pretty much walk into town to access anything you need. However, when the campground is full, it is packed. Not a lot of wiggle room and your neighbors are not always pleasant. People will park in every direction too, which makes it difficult to park a camper.  I would suggest getting a spot towards the back of the campground as they are not as desirable, but you'll have a little more room to work with.

Gorgeous Part of Lake Michigan

Situatated across the parking lot from Lake Michigan. The beach is beautiful with crystal clear water and plenty of room to play! The campsites are essentially a parking lot in the sand. they are short and crowded. if you like being near the beach, this might be your place. As a glamper, I’d rather camp somewhere else and just come here for the beach.

If you like Lake Michigan Beaches, This place is for you!

If you enjoy sunshine, beaches, trails and camping...this is the best place for you! Bring your bike, enjoy the sand, water and people watching along the shores of Lake Michigan! We rode our bikes for miles enjoying the beaches, took the dune rides, got icecream and relaxed by the campfire. We should have taken the entire week off to relax! We will be back!

beach lyfe

A super well organized state park with clean facilities, but you have to book fast or it's gone. Non-RV sites have you put up your tent on sand. Easy walk to the beach for beautiful views, or into Pentwater to go to boutiques, restaurants and ice cream shops. We loved our time here! Awesome campground, and I cannot wait to go back!
