Buttersville Park Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Perched on a bluff above Lake Michigan, Buttersville Park Campground draws a lively crowd on summer weekends, with sites packed close enough that neighbors are hard to ignore. The campground sits within Butterfield County Park on the edge of Ludington, and the bluff location is its most defining feature: more than 70 stairs lead down to the beach, though campers with mobility concerns can reach the same shoreline through the adjacent public park. Site sizes vary noticeably, with larger spots like site 3 providing considerably more room than the average pitch.

Shade is generous across much of the campground, and several reviewers mention deer moving through the woods near the sites. Amenities include electric hookups, drinking water, showers, a dump station, and a playground. The shower house is generally well-maintained, though pit toilets away from the main office have drawn complaints about cleanliness. WiFi is listed but described by at least one camper as spotty.

The campground runs a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served sites. Firewood is available on-site at reasonable prices. Julie S. notes the bluff is "a great place to watch the sunset," which reflects why the site fills quickly in peak season. Campers who prefer more space and seclusion may want to look at Mason County Campground or Poncho's Pond RV Park as alternatives in the area.

Great location; packed-in sites

Came in on a Sunday, and the campground was packed. With a few exceptions, the sites are super close together. That’s not my preference, but it was clear many campers come in groups booking several neighboring sites, and it was fun to see everyone enjoying themselves. We were fortunate to have one of the larger sites(#3), which gave us plenty of room. The location is outstanding, perched on a Lake Michigan bluff with 70+ stairs leading to the beach. If stairs aren't great for you, you can also access the beach from the public park just around the corner. The campground staff was friendly and helpful at check-in, and they sell quality firewood at a reasonable price. The shower house was in good condition, though the women's bathroom could have been cleaner. The pit toilets near our site also needed attention. If you're looking for privacy and spacious, secluded camping, this probably isn't the campground for you. But if you enjoy a lively, family-friendly atmosphere in an amazing location, it's worth considering.

One of my favorite places, ever...

Beautiful campground if you can get a reservation. It used to be all first come first served, but now they have some reservable sites. I've been coming here since I was a kid. The bluff over looking the lake is a great place to watch the sunset.

Right on Lake Michigan!

Large shaded sites, gorgeous campground, playground, steps to the beach. Flush toilets are fairly clean near the office, others are pit toilets. Spotty Wi-Fi.

Great Campground

Had an amazing time at this campground. Beautiful quiet and great location. We had site 24 and faced the road. There was deer laying in the woods daily which was great entertainment for us. I would highly recommend you check this park out.
