Algonac State Park Campground permits pets throughout its grounds with sites positioned along the St. Clair River. Campers can observe freighter traffic from riverfront sites while their dogs enjoy the camping experience. Addison Oaks County Park provides pet-friendly accommodations across tent sites, RV spots, cabins, glamping options, and yurts. Bald Mountain Recreation Area allows pets at their cabin accommodations while maintaining clean facilities. Most campgrounds in the Mount Clemens area require pets to be leashed at all times, with owners responsible for waste cleanup and proper supervision. Sites often include standard amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and drinking water access alongside pet-friendly policies. Mosquitoes can be problematic during summer months, especially in wooded areas like Algonac's Wagonwheel section.

Hiking trails throughout these pet-friendly parks provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs and their owners. The bike trail running through Algonac State Park offers additional recreation options for active campers with pets. Several campgrounds feature modern restrooms and shower facilities while maintaining their pet policies. Ridgewood Campground enforces a policy requiring tent campers to park vehicles in designated lots after setup, which may impact pet owners needing frequent access to vehicles for pet supplies. Seasonal considerations affect facility availability, with some parks offering year-round access while others like Addison Oaks operate from April through October. The archery and shooting ranges at Algonac create noise that may disturb sensitive pets. Wildlife encounters are possible, so keeping dogs leashed helps protect both local animals and pets.

      Shoefelt Trailhead

Small Parking lot in state hunting area. We have a 21 ft TT and were able to back in. If you can’t access the parking lot, there is a turnaround just past the lot. No water or dump. T-Mobile 1 bar. Good road. Hiking and pet friendly.

      Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park

      Great stop over

This isn’t a remote getaway, it’s a great spot that’s close to everything you need. Some reviews commented on the highway noise, I had no issues. Staff was friendly and helpful, facilities were clean. There’s an illuminated walk path that connects to the Walmart which is super convenient.

      Home State Kudos

I came, desperate and exhausted...I saw, an opportunity for an extended stay...I conquered, my inexperience was met with warmth and accommodating camp attendants and camp neighbors. And God was with me the entire journey from Virginia to this Blessed Ground in Michigan. Seems forever had I longed for so much Peace and Quiet. Forever grateful am I. 😇🥰

      KOA Campground Emmett

      Great Campground

We had a great stay! Didn’t enjoy any of the activities but heard they were a blast. We enjoyed the texted alerts on activities. This was our second trip with our new rv, just chilled and enjoyed. It was a bit noisy at night, it’s to be expected with children and the generation we live in today. Overall a great experience! Hope to return soon to enjoy the activities.

      Lakeport State Park Campground

      Great state park!

I was pleasantly surprised by this state park. I prefer camping that is more secluded and the pictures on the DNR site appeared very close together.

The North loop of the campground was very noisy and crowded. However, the South loop had more of the rustic vibe I prefer. The sites were spacious and while there weren’t trees in between each site, there were trees lining between each row that backed up to each other.

The beach is a bit rocky so beach shoes are recommended. The rocks are well worth the seclusion on the south side of the beach.

I will definitely be back to this campground!

      Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area

      Nice state park

As usual, there's only electric at sites, but the pedestals seem fairly new, and tight. South loop is nicely wooded & has a newer, larger restroom/shower building, not much lake view. The north loop is a little less wooded, with the NW end having a little better lake views, but a pretty ancient restroom/shower facility.

Across the lake is the day use area with a beach and concession stand. (There's a small camp store in the north loop.)

ADA Only sites are asphalt paved. Some of the regular sites could be a challenge to get level on, but the rangers told me they have wood blocks for loan if you don't have enough.

Our first night & a half, we had some terrible neighbors two sites over. Constant profanities, yelling at & threatening their kids... real dirtbags. Rangers booted them from the park! Good to see them taking such positive action. I have not run into a single staff member here that wasn't pleasant.

This was our first time here. A test run, since it's only an hour from home (but feels farther). We'll be back for sure. (Especially with gas prices so high anymore.)

T-Mobile was only slow LTE at our site, but our Starlink worked perfectly at our site. Might be harder to get a clear shot in the more wooded areas of the park.

    Guide to Mount Clemens

Mount Clemens camping areas sit along the St. Clair River watershed, which connects Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair through southeast Michigan. The region maintains relatively flat terrain with mature deciduous forests and wetland areas throughout the recreation zones. Summer temperatures typically range from 75-85°F, while spring and fall camping seasons experience temperature fluctuations between 45-70°F depending on timing.

    What to do

Archery practice: 10-station range at Algonac State Park Campground open April through October, daily from 8am-sunset. Equipment not provided. "They also have a range for archery, and firearms. The park was kept clean," notes Sandy K., who adds this is "A fantastic state park to enjoy the view of the river, bonfires and meet people."

Disc golf courses: 18-hole course at Oakland County parks with concrete tee pads and basket targets. "Addison Oaks is a campground that features hiking and mountain biking trails, campground, cabins, disc golf course, and a lake for boating," explains Kate K., who visited in early spring.

Lakefront activities: Swimming beaches and fishing available at multiple locations with designated areas. James P. describes Camp Agawam as having "campsites, a playground, swimming, fishing, an outdoor amphitheater (with concerts!), pavilion rentals, and disc golf!"

Freighter watching: St. Clair River sites offer views of passing cargo ships. "If you can get a River View site its is awesome. Freighters come by at all times of the day," writes Kelly B., noting that October tends to have less traffic than summer months.

    What campers like

Wooded privacy: Sites with natural separation between camping areas. At Holly State Recreation Area, Jennifer H. found "several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees. I think site #1 was one of the roomiest and prettiest." Similarly, other campers appreciate how "the sites aren't super far away from each other but there are trees between sites so from most of the sites you can't really see your neighbors."

Modern facilities: Recently renovated bathrooms with hot water and proper maintenance. Laura M. was impressed at Proud Lake Recreation Area, noting "You need to know that this place is so so clean! The grounds, the sites, the bathrooms and the showers are all impeccable." Jennifer O. agrees the bathrooms are "BEAUTIFUL. They must have been recently renovated because they are spacious, tiled, well maintained, and very modern feeling for a campground."

Trail connectivity: Multi-use paths linking camping areas to beaches and recreation zones. Mary H. reports "Wonderful place for a quick get away. Park is clean. Beach is a 1.8 mile hike from the East loop in the campground but is well worth the walk."

Dog-friendly environments: Multiple pet policy options across campgrounds. Sarah P. appreciates Pontiac Lake's approach where "The sites aren't super far away from each other but there are trees between sites." Most dog friendly campgrounds near Mount Clemens enforce standard leash policies while providing dedicated pet walking areas.

    What you should know

Seasonal facility changes: Reduced services during shoulder seasons. A visitor to Pontiac Lake Recreation Area observed that "Since this is well beyond normal camping season here in Michigan we understand staffing levels are going to be low but they still charge the same price regardless of that. The newer, cleaner, and nicer facilities were closed up for the season."

Variable site conditions: Weather impacts can affect accessibility. Daniel from Pontiac Lake Recreation Area found his "Camp site was nice with blacktop pad and once parked felt very secluded and could barely see site past truck in parking spot. Great for getting away and seeing the night sky."

Road maintenance concerns: Campground access varies significantly between parks. According to one camper, "Sooo many ruts that I was deeply concerned for the undercarriage of both my truck and camper. Again, they are charging the same state fees as some of the nicer campgrounds we've stayed at, but the roads were inexcusable for a campground."

Wildlife encounters: Native species throughout camping areas. Many campgrounds near Mount Clemens report abundant wildlife that requires proper food storage. Kristina J. warns visitors to bring protective measures: "There are tons of mosquitoes and ticks, so make sure you bring bug spray. Also make sure that all food and garbage is secure at night, the raccoons have no fear."

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly programming: Weekend activities scheduled throughout peak season. At Addison Oaks County Park, Wendy K. reports they have "kids activities on the weekends, a lake for swimming, great playgrounds and everything is really clean."

Playground options: Multiple play areas within easy walking distance from sites. Stephanie H. from Holly State Recreation Area mentions "We've state at this campground on and off for roughly 3 weeks staying mostly at the Cedar cabin but we also tent camped as well. The staff is amazing, the campground is well maintained and quiet... the kids loved the parks."

Halloween camping events: Structured family activities during fall camping weekends. Justin G. explains: "Proud lake is very nice... we've been going to halloween camping for the past 2 years, decorate your site and the kids get dressed up an go trick or treating in camp, theres a costume contest and hay rides, fun family atmosphere."

Water recreation options: Swimming beaches available at most larger parks. One visitor appreciated that "Bring a bike or drive. Beach is nice. Has a water park on the lake," referring to the splash features available for children at certain locations.

    Tips from RVers

Electrical hookup locations: Variable access points depending on site layout. Mary H. suggests "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad."

Site selection for privacy: Consider specific loops when booking for maximum seclusion. At Bald Mountain Recreation Area, Kate K. notes the cabins are "rustic, so they don't have electricity or heat but there is a large wood burning stove" and are "popular with hunters and scout troops."

Dump station protocol: Designated dumping areas at main campground entrances. Sam H. appreciated that one park offered "Water hookup and dump on site" making extended stays more convenient for RVers needing to manage waste and water.

Back-in site considerations: Tree placement affects parking ease. Richard T. chose to stay "in the more wilderness area D with lots of trees and sites for tents or back-in trailers" at Oakland County Addison Oaks, noting that "Sites have electricity and water and are well spaced out."
