      Swallow Falls State Park Campground

Beautiful area with a waterfall hike

Lovely little campground in a beautiful forest, with a great waterfall hike walkable to the campground. I stayed in Garrett in October and it was still packed full of people, which for me was nice because I like feeling like I'm in a community of campers. But the sites were super close together, basically right now the main drag, not very private, especially without leaf cover, and a little smaller than I expected. But well kept, in more forest than I was expecting, and I enjoyed myself. The canyon trail was mobbed, but it was a stunning weekend so that's not surprising. Bathrooms in the offseason could have used a bit more attention, but they weren't too bad.

      Keystone State Park Campground

      Decent place

Stayed the weekend for the first time and it wasn’t bad! There were kids playing at sites nearby but that was all the noise, highway noise at all! I like how they have a spot for your tent with a picnic table and fire ring. I was in my rooftop tent on my truck so I wish the parking spot went back a little deeper for a little more privacy. But it was nice that there was bathrooms and showers within a 1 minute walk from the site! Also it says on here there is no AT&T signal, that’s not true…it’s not great but there is a bar or 2 at times!

      Rocky Gap State Park Campground

      Quiet campground with private sites

This quiet campground has plenty of wooded campsites that offer privacy to campers. We were in the electric loop and it can be a bit tight if your rig is larger, and also you need to be prepared to level your rig in several different directions. But all in all, it was a great spot for an overnight day and we even got to check out some of the trails. Very nice park overall.

Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground

      Beautiful location

The spots are spread out and the trees are beautiful. The people are so nice. The drive in is tight narrow lanes. We stayed one night at #49, pull through with water and electric, no sewer. We booked #43 but Becky moved us to 49 cuz it’s more level.

Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park

Restrooms, showers and visitor center get an F

Stayed one night. Close to Fallingwater and Fort Necessity.  The campsite was terrible; close to water and buggy, steep grade required lots of blocking to level the camper and challenging to hook up to the vehicle. Thick canopy kept Starlink from working. The worst part was the bathrooms. The one closest to our spot had no hot water. So we had to walk about a half a mile to two other restrooms and showers within 100 yards of each other. Makes no sense. Anyway, both bathrooms were filthy, had paint peeling everywhere, lots of black mold growing on the ceilings, growing everywhere. No place to hang clothes while taking a shower. One of the two toilets in each of the men’s room was probably 3 feet off the ground. Made for giants I guess!  And good luck finding the visitor center. It’s hidden from view and parking is terrible.  You’ll have to walk 150 yards from the nearest point of the parking lot to find it. To walk there from the bus and RV parking, add an additional 1/4 mile each way. Be aware that the visitor center store does not accept credit cards. Cash or check only. Who does that? It’s 2026 Pennsylvania!

      Shawnee State Park Campground

      Well maintained

The sites and roads are well maintained. Some sites are on hilly roads but are acceptable for tenters. The bathhouse is older but the showers are hot. August 2026

Yough Lake Campground at Tub Run

      Fantastic for Family

We love it here so much we almost never leave. There is a creek, playground and games for the kids year round. The lake is great for fishing, boating, swimming and more from March-August usually but even longer this year it seems. They are INCREDIBLY strict about 5mph and I LOVE THAT! My 8 year old can run around and be a kid at camp like I was without me being panicked. They even have events once a month. They are constantly adding and upgrading around the campground. Everything from walk to primitive sites to full hook ups and dry cabins.

Highly recommend for a long or short get away.

    Guide to Friendsville

The Friendsville area sits at approximately 1,700 feet elevation in Maryland's mountainous western region, where temperatures can drop 10-15 degrees cooler than eastern parts of the state. Campers find diverse terrain with rocky outcroppings, dense hemlock forests, and stream valleys throughout the region. Seasonal considerations are important when planning yurt camping near Friendsville, as many facilities close between December and April due to freezing temperatures and snow accumulation.

    What to do

Hiking near waterfalls: At Swallow Falls State Park, trails lead to Maryland's highest waterfall. "The trail head is right in the campground so that made it extremely easy," notes camper Don L., making it convenient for families with children to access the natural attractions without lengthy travel.

Winter exploration: Blackwater Falls State Park transforms completely during colder months. "Skiing must be very popular in the winter," observes camper Cynthia K., who visited the park's numerous trails. The area maintains some yurt accommodations throughout winter, offering a unique opportunity for off-season camping near Friendsville.

Mountain biking: The Great Allegheny Passage trail connects to several campgrounds. "We loved being able to access the GAP trail right from the campground," shares Bounding Around from their Ohiopyle stay. The 150-mile trail system offers flat, converted railway paths suitable for cyclists of all experience levels.

Stargazing: Benner's Meadow Run offers dedicated astronomy facilities. "We went to Benner's meadow the end of September... This was our first big trip with two large dogs and it did not disappoint," writes Emily L., who enjoyed the "star gazing platform" despite noting it "leaves a lot to be desired and is in need of repair."

    What campers like

Natural water features: Yough Lake Campground at Tub Run provides direct water access. "The swimming area is lovely as is the playground. This is one place that we would definitely go back to visit the incredible friends that we made," explains Kathy G., highlighting the social aspect of lakeside camping.

Wildlife viewing: The forests around campsites offer wildlife observation opportunities. "We were lucky enough to witness a spectacular light show put up by thousands of fireflies at night," shares Simon S. about his Deep Creek Lake stay, adding a reminder about local hazards: "It is Maryland so watch out for poison ivy when walking through bushes."

Privacy between sites: Site selection impacts camping experience significantly. "The campground was quiet, regardless of it being a holiday weekend with lots of kids around," notes Erin O. about Swallow Falls. Many yurt camping locations near Friendsville maintain good separation between accommodations for a sense of seclusion.

Camp store conveniences: Blackwater Falls State Park Campground provides on-site necessities. "The office has some basics," reports Cynthia K., while another camper notes "The camp store has firewood and helpful rangers." These amenities reduce the need for long drives to resupply.

    What you should know

Site layouts vary dramatically: At Ohiopyle State Park, campsites have specific placement requirements. "You have to stay inside the wood that bounds the pad," explains Jonathan F. about tent restrictions at Deep Creek Lake, which can limit flexibility for larger group setups.
