Several RV parks serve the Churchton area with varying levels of amenities and site configurations. Cherry Hill Park in College Park offers premium full hookup RV sites with 50-amp service, concrete pads, and pull-through options for larger motorhomes. Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina in Abingdon provides 91 sites with waterfront options, many featuring 50-amp hookups and gravel surfaces. "The daily waterfront sites are pricy but right on the water with great views. Some of the trailer sites are a tough back in but worth the trouble," according to one camper. Prince William Forest RV Campground near Triangle, Virginia accommodates recreational vehicles with pull-through sites, though some areas have limited maneuvering space due to tight roads and tree coverage.

Advance reservations are highly recommended during peak seasons, particularly at popular parks like Cherry Hill where Washington DC visitors frequently stay. Most campgrounds in the region provide sanitary dump stations, with some offering full sewer connections directly at sites. Cell service varies significantly by location, with AT&T coverage ranging from excellent at Cherry Hill to spotty at more wooded locations. Pet restrictions differ between facilities—some have designated pet areas while others allow pets throughout with standard leash requirements. Between April and October, campgrounds operate at maximum capacity, though several parks like Camp Meade RV remain open year-round with winterized water connections. A reviewer noted, "The entire park is clean and well-maintained...our site was level and the full hookups all worked fine."

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Burke Lake Park Campground

      Amenities good

The park is very well maintained, and the campsites have clean fire pits and cooking grills. The restrooms are clean, spacious, and well maintained, and my campsite was large enough to comfortably fit a 6-person tent and a canopy.

However, there were a few concerns during our stay. Despite the campground’s quiet hours policy starting at 10:00 PM, many campers continued to make noise well past that time. I did not notice any campground staff or maintenance personnel making rounds to enforce the quiet hours.

I also felt concerned about security. One of my neighboring campers, who was visiting from South Carolina, told me that his generator had been stolen during the night. He reported the theft to the police, and an official report was filed. Incidents like this made me feel unsafe while camping.

I recommend increasing staff or security patrols, especially during the evening and overnight hours, to enforce quiet hours and improve the safety and security of campers and their belongings. With better enforcement and security, Burke Lake Campground would provide an even better camping experience.

      Bay Shore Campground

      Fred’s bay shore

One of our favorite places. Very well kept. No bathhouse so bring your own. A lot of shady sites. Great views of Chesapeake bay. Flat roads in the area for cycling.

      Ramblin' Pines

      Weak WiFi

For $90 per night the WiFi should work better. Didn’t connect at all. Had to use the antenna pointed East to get local Baltimore news.

    Guide to Churchton

Camping areas near Churchton, Maryland offer varying amenities and operating schedules across multiple state and county facilities. Located on Maryland's western shore between Annapolis and Washington DC, the region maintains moderate humidity levels throughout summer with precipitation averaging 3-4 inches monthly. Most campgrounds operate at full capacity between April and October, with a limited number remaining open year-round for winter camping.

    What to do

Nature walks and hiking trails: Prince William Forest RV Campground provides access to hiking options in the adjacent national park. "Prince William Forest National Park is accessible for awesome day hikes. Civil War National Parks nearby. DC just up the road. National Marine Corp Museum just around corner," notes Kenneth H. about the convenient location for outdoor activities.

Fishing opportunities: Waterfront sites at Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina allow fishing directly from campsites. "You have to drive through a residential neighborhood to reach Bar Harbor, so big rigs take care/caution," warns Craig Z. The park offers a fishing pier and opportunities for crabbing, which is particularly popular with Maryland campers.

Historical exploration: Visit George Washington's birthplace near Thousand Trails Harbor View. "Right down the road from George Washington's birthplace," says Jason E. The campground serves as a good base for exploring Colonial Beach and nearby historical sites, with most visitors spending 2-3 days exploring the surrounding area.

    What campers like

Waterfront camping views: At Bar Harbor RV Park, waterfront sites provide immediate water access. "Beautiful water front sites and good location right off 95. We are here visiting family for the holidays and it's serving us well," notes Casey L. The park has 91 sites with many offering direct water views.

Swimming pool options: Greenbelt Park Campground offers basic but clean facilities with reasonable rates. "Showers were decent. You can hear some traffic noise. Perhaps from the highways or just in the park. Overall very nice and convenient," reports Nick C. The campground maintains four separate loops with varying accommodation types.

Urban convenience with nature setting: Military Park at Annapolis Naval Station provides a strategic location. "Military campground. Very spartan but great location. Not much to do in the campground and some long timers there. Dirt cheap," states Ginny L. The campground offers basic amenities while providing proximity to Annapolis at significantly lower rates than commercial alternatives.

    What you should know

Seasonal closures and availability: Many campgrounds in the region have limited winter operations. Cedarville State Forest operates from April to October only. "Ranger delivers firewood to your site within about 10-15 min of calling, which was very convenient. Cost was $5 for 8 logs," mentions Nurse N., highlighting the personalized service available during operating months.

Military base access requirements: Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp requires proper credentials for entry. "You need military credentials. Handy to the DC Metro Transit system. Nice views of river. Eagle's nest were interesting," explains Mike H. The campground offers security advantages but restricts public access.

Insect considerations: Ticks and mosquitos can be problematic during warm months. "Bring bug and tick spray - definitely need it! We hiked the brown trail and it was a nice walk," advises Nurse N. about Cedarville State Forest. Most campgrounds recommend insect repellent with at least 25% DEET for effective protection.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Cherry Hill Park offers extensive family-friendly amenities. "Playground, Mini Golf, Swimming Pool, Hot tub, Basketball court, Snack bar on site, Nightly hayride," lists Beth R. The campground provides structured activities specifically designed for families with children.

Transportation considerations: When visiting DC attractions, public transportation offers advantages. "The train ride from the Greenbelt station to the national mall is about 30 min. Get off at the Archives station to be in the center of all the sites," advises Laura M. about using Greenbelt Park Campground as a base for city exploration.

Site selection strategies: At Harbor View, site placement affects camping experience. "Sites are CLOSE, but the bathrooms are very clean! Very close to Colonial Beach. The spaces are CLOSE, but the bathrooms are very clean," emphasizes Samantha G. Families should request end-of-row sites when possible for additional space and privacy.

    Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Some regional campgrounds have uneven terrain. "Some sites are a little unlevel, front to rear, but definitely manageable," notes Mike H. about Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp. RVers should bring multiple leveling blocks, especially for the waterfront sites at Bar Harbor where the slope can exceed 3 inches.

Driving and site access: Camp Meade RV Park accommodates larger vehicles but requires awareness of military base protocols. "Was great not to have to really worry about anything because you are securely on post. I forgot all about revielle. They reminded me," shares Elvin J. RVs entering military installations must undergo security inspection and provide proper identification.

Hookup considerations: Most commercial RV parks near Churchton offer full hookup options but with varying electrical capacity. "Sites vary in levelness, some are fairly level and some are on a mini hill. Driveways are all very narrow," observes Laura M. about site conditions. Most state parks provide only partial hookups with 30-amp service being standard while private parks typically offer 50-amp connections.
