Adventure Bound Washington DC features full pet amenities for campers with dogs, including designated walking areas and trash disposal stations. This family-owned campground accommodates pets at all tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals without additional pet fees or breed restrictions. Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park Campground also welcome dogs, requiring leashes no longer than six feet when outside camping units. Most long-term residents at Adventure Bound maintain well-behaved pets that respect quiet hours, though visitors should secure proper identification tags for their animals. Lacy Oasis Campground allows pets at their six tent sites, providing picnic tables and fire pits suitable for camping with furry companions.

Cedarville State Forest's trails serve as excellent exercise routes for leashed dogs, though campers should check pets thoroughly for ticks after exploring—multiple reviews note significant tick presence during summer months. Sandy Point State Park permits pets in designated camping areas but prohibits them on beaches and swimming zones. The Washington DC/Capitol KOA offers pet-friendly yurts and cabins with nearby waste stations. Pine Tree Associates Nudist Club accepts pets at their camping facilities despite its unique clothing-optional environment. All campgrounds enforce standard rules requiring campers to clean up after pets and keep them leashed when outside designated exercise areas, with quiet hours typically beginning at 10 PM.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

      Campsites at Watkins Regional Park

Excellent choice for a Washington visit or local getaway

Based on my stay 3 nights and what I read of Greenbelt Park (the other closeby to Washington campground) I would say this has to be much better and I will stay here again on a future visit. Campground sits inside of a much larger park with great trails, amenities and well maintained. Campground is quiet, lots of trees, forest and yet each space is very large with good spacing and privacy to adjacent sites. High tree canopy at your site so lots of room to spread out. Sites themselves are a little rustic - a mix of grass, gravel and dirt, but not muddy (it rained a good bit prior to my stay) - but in good condition. Shower/toilet block is clean and good hot water and good water pressure. Most sites are flat or near flat and the ones that aren't need minimal levelling blocks. Campground apparently is never full and there was only 1 other when I was there - really hard to believe. There is a neighborhood road up by the sites near the shower block but it is low speed and lightly travelled and I had no disturbance from it. Nice surrounding neighborhood. No signs of vagrants. Park police patrolled multiple times per day and report very little non-camper entry to ther facilities. I felt very safe.Easy access to Eashington - bus stop outside the campground to metro or just drive to the metro (free parking weekend, $6 midweek) and then train (about 8 per hour) into the sites - an hour or less total to get there. For more local people, this seems like a good escape "to the woods" without travelling forever.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Burke Lake Park Campground

      Amenities good

The park is very well maintained, and the campsites have clean fire pits and cooking grills. The restrooms are clean, spacious, and well maintained, and my campsite was large enough to comfortably fit a 6-person tent and a canopy.

However, there were a few concerns during our stay. Despite the campground’s quiet hours policy starting at 10:00 PM, many campers continued to make noise well past that time. I did not notice any campground staff or maintenance personnel making rounds to enforce the quiet hours.

I also felt concerned about security. One of my neighboring campers, who was visiting from South Carolina, told me that his generator had been stolen during the night. He reported the theft to the police, and an official report was filed. Incidents like this made me feel unsafe while camping.

I recommend increasing staff or security patrols, especially during the evening and overnight hours, to enforce quiet hours and improve the safety and security of campers and their belongings. With better enforcement and security, Burke Lake Campground would provide an even better camping experience.

      Bay Shore Campground

      Fred’s bay shore

One of our favorite places. Very well kept. No bathhouse so bring your own. A lot of shady sites. Great views of Chesapeake bay. Flat roads in the area for cycling.

    Guide to Churchton

Campgrounds near Churchton, Maryland offer diverse accommodations within 30 miles of the Chesapeake Bay. The area maintains moderate temperatures between 45-85°F throughout camping season, with higher humidity levels from July through September. Summer camping reservations typically require booking 2-3 months in advance, particularly for weekend stays.

    What to do

Visit nearby parks and trails: Cedarville State Forest features multiple hiking trails with wildlife viewing opportunities. "There are decent trails to hike here too. There's a sacrifice of space here- I'd like to see it expand a bit, as the campground can fill quickly, especially if RV's are involved," notes one visitor to Cedarville State Forest. The forest maintains several loops for both individual and group camping.

Explore Washington DC: Several campgrounds serve as bases for city exploration. "It takes about a half hour to get downtown to the monuments. Our uber rides ranged from 20-45$ for a family of 5. So $4-9 per person. We rode in all 4 days this way," shares a camper from Cherry Hill Park. Many visitors use public transportation options rather than driving into the city.

Water activities: Kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are accessible from multiple locations. A visitor to Final-Lee Here Campground describes: "We kayaked the river and creek through beautiful marshlands where we saw caterpillars walk on water, a heron and bald eagles soaring above, turtles, a cove where thousands of tadpoles were amidst metamorphosis scampering through and atop the water, and a multitude of dragonflies."

    What campers like

Peaceful wooded settings: Many campgrounds maintain natural surroundings despite urban proximity. At Final-Lee Here, campers appreciate that "The land is well groomed with grassy, shaded tent sites, RV sites, tall, privacy-offering bamboo, evergreens (it's a tree farm), and forested trails to a soothing, water-trickling creek."

Kid-friendly amenities: Families highlight recreational facilities at several locations. At Washington DC / Capitol KOA, one reviewer notes: "We stopped at the DC KOA as a base to visit the Capitol. This is not a site for nature lovers but is perfect for kids. We had a site near the pool, outdoor chess set, jumping pillow and gaga ball pit. Our kids (9, 10 and 14) all had fun and made friends."

Convenience to attractions: Location advantages factor heavily in positive reviews. "This campground is conveniently located in the middle of the DC / Annapolis area and has a lot to offer! There are plenty of options, both for RV's and in general and the staff is super friendly!" reports a visitor to Adventure Bound Washington DC.

    What you should know

Long-term residents: Several campgrounds host extended-stay guests. "Mainly longterm construction workers and families," reports one camper about Adventure Bound Washington DC. Another notes: "Many staying at the campground are working in the area, but all seem to be great folks."

Limited availability during peak times: Summer months bring capacity challenges to some locations. At Greenbelt Park Campground, "Weekdays are pretty quiet in this campground. Living nearby but storing my popup camper elsewhere, I often park my camper here for a few days while I pack it for a trip."

Tick presence: Wooded areas require precautions. "I've never left this park without at least one tick," states a Cedarville State Forest visitor. Another camper warns: "LOTS and LOTS of ticks. I got one, but my wife and dog got about a dozen each. Just bring tweezers."

    Tips for camping with families

Pool facilities: Swimming options provide relief during hot months. Cherry Hill Park offers "Two pools, splash pad, arcade, 24 hour laundry, a store and office open early!! And late!!! Wow! Just can't be beat. Great sites. So many other things in the park. Splash pad, paved roads for scootering."

Nature programs: Some parks offer educational activities. At Greenbelt Park, campers report: "Rangers keep a close eye on things, and there are monthly programs at the campfire circle that I sometimes attend even when not camping here."

Pet-friendly options: Most campgrounds around Churchton welcome four-legged family members. Lacy Oasis Campground provides six tent sites with "picnic tables and fire pits suitable for camping with furry companions." Their small size creates an intimate setting for families with pets.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Some campgrounds offer varied experiences based on location. "If you get an area to back into it'll be more secluded, but the pull through spots offer no privacy," advises a KOA visitor. At Cherry Hill Park, another camper suggests to "Look at the park map and try to get a site at the end of a row. The sites are pretty close together but on the ends at least you only have a neighbor on one side."

Hookup availability: Electric and water access varies by location. Pine Tree Associates Nudist Club offers electric and water hookups at their RV sites, though sewer connections aren't available. "Camping fees include access to a large outdoor pool, an indoor pool and a hot tub. There is room for tenting and campers," notes a visitor.

Access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging entries. A reviewer at Adventure Bound Washington DC cautions: "Do not try and come in after dark. Very tight and very dark."
