Best Campgrounds near Steamboat Rock, IA

Steamboat Rock, Iowa provides several camping options along the Iowa River and nearby lakes. Pine Ridge Park, located directly in Steamboat Rock, offers tent and RV camping with river access, making it popular for paddlers and anglers. Tower Rock County Park features modern cabins with full amenities, though tent camping is no longer permitted there. Eagle City County Park, approximately 5 miles north near Iowa Falls, provides primitive dispersed camping on 172 acres with vault toilets and hand-pump water access. Pine Lake State Park, located about 7 miles southeast in Eldora, rounds out the region's developed campgrounds with electric hookups, showers, and lakefront sites.

Seasonal considerations affect camping experiences throughout the area, particularly regarding river conditions. The Iowa River, which runs alongside several campgrounds, experiences periodic flooding that can impact site availability and access roads. Campgrounds like Pine Ridge Park remain open year-round, though amenities may be limited during winter months. Most developed campgrounds in the region offer electric hookups, with Pine Lake State Park providing the most comprehensive facilities including showers and flush toilets. Primitive camping areas like Eagle City County Park maintain minimal facilities but offer greater seclusion. As one visitor noted, "Eagle City is located on 172 acres of land. It has an enclosed picnic shelter, hand pump well, vault rest rooms, primitive camping, and 2 swing sets."

Campers consistently highlight water access as a primary attraction in the area. The Iowa River provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and tubing, with several campgrounds offering direct river access. According to reviews, Pine Ridge Park is "right on the Iowa river near a takeout, so you can put in upstream and paddle down." Visitors should note that some campgrounds have specific considerations - Pine Ridge Park is located near a members-only rifle range which can create daytime noise, though "it is very safe as the range points away from the campground." Tower Rock Park no longer permits tent camping but maintains modern cabins that receive positive reviews. The region's campgrounds generally maintain clean facilities with reasonable spacing between sites, though proximity to water means mosquitoes can be problematic during summer months.

    Lake Cornelia Park

    Beautiful place

This is a beautiful county park with lots of camping sites with great views and generous camping spots. It is on a small lake that has good fishing, full hookups, and very nice swimming b each beach. We also enjoyed walking on the many trails.

    Deerwood Park

    Cash Only

Good place to camp. Seems safe and friendly. Only down side is that it's cash only. Who carries cash these days?!

    George Wyth State Park Campground

    Great State Park

This is a clean and well kept campground. There are great paved trails, and it is close to the free John Deere Museum, and the Cedar Valley Arboretum. I’m not giving it a 5 star rating for two reasons: one there are a lot of mosquitoes (I get that it is their home), and two the showers are the type that don’t allow you to mix your own water temperature, and they only stay on for a few seconds every time you press the button. The water was a comfortable temperature for me though. Also, the park does occasionally close for flooding.

    Deerwood Park

A parking lot would be more welcoming

I had a seasonal spot at deerwood and was constantly harassed by the camp hosts, I had my reviews removed (only to be reposted by the city attorney), and was told to trim the trees as round my spot. I've been full time for 7 years and this was by far the worst experience I've had at a campground.

If the metal bolts sticking out of the speed bumps don't get you..... The sewage plant 200 yards away will.

This place is CHEAP. and you get what you pay for.

    Rock Creek State Park Campground

    Sites close together

RV sites are close and busy. Grass and shade. Tenting area had a much quieter vibe. Lots of dogs. Ranger was helpful. It was a Sunday.

    Dows Pool Park & Campground

    Dows Campground

Pulled in one evening on our way to Texas from Minnesota. Large, open spaces equipped with a fire pit and picnic table. Electric hookups and water also available. Reasonable rates (I think we paid $15) for one night.

    Rock Creek State Park Campground

    Too close for comfort

Very nice lake. Very nice grass for your tent. The sites both tent and RV are simply too close for you to enjoy the place. Camp fires every 10 feet.
