Pine Ridge Park's campsites accommodate both tent and RV campers with pets. Located in Steamboat Rock alongside the Iowa River, the park permits dogs throughout the camping area with standard leash requirements. Campers note the grounds are regularly maintained with adequate space between sites for walking pets. The park features electric hookups, drinking water, firewood availability, and clean restroom facilities with showers. Quiet campground setting allows for peaceful evenings with pets, though campers should be aware that during heavy rainfall, riverside campsites may experience flooding when water levels rise. Pine Lake State Park Campground, approximately 7 miles away, also welcomes pets with additional amenities including cabins that accept dogs.

Pine Ridge Park provides direct river access for dogs that enjoy water activities, with the Iowa River bordering the campground. Eagle City County Park offers another pet-friendly option with primitive riverside camping and several designated sites with fire rings and picnic tables. Pet owners should bring waste bags as dedicated pet waste stations are limited at these parks. Hiking trails at Pine Lake State Park provide exercise opportunities for leashed dogs, with paths following the shoreline and through wooded areas. During summer months, the gun range near Pine Ridge Park may create intermittent noise during daylight hours that could disturb noise-sensitive dogs. The convenience store in Steamboat Rock, a short drive from the campground, provides basic supplies for campers and their pets. Both campgrounds remain accessible year-round, though Pine Lake's facilities are more developed with recently updated bathroom facilities appreciated by campers with pets needing regular cleanup.

      Tower Rock

Modern cabins and a beautiful park

The two cabins are fairly new and have all of the amenities. My mother-in-law stayed here while visiting recently and we enjoyed spending time at her cabin.

While camping is no longer allowed in Tower Rock park, you can still enjoy a walk down to the river or bicycling on the paved bicycle trail. Tube rentals are available nearby for the Iowa River, and a local outfitter will rent a boat for the day to fish Pine Lake or the small lake northwest of Steamboat Rock.

Pine lake is not that far away either and offers many fun activities.

      Riverview Park Campground

Urban campground is near a busy highway

This campground has many sites to choose from - RV with hookups as well as some non-electric tent sites. There are quite a few activities in Marshalltown, and it is within the Marshalltown city limits.

The downside is proximity. It is right next to the highway. When I was there in a tent, the hog trucks would drive by all night (loud and smelly). The RV sites are closest to the road, so maybe it is not so bad in an RV, but it is not particularly enjoyable in a tent.

      Pros:

+ Marshalltown has quite a few places to eat

+ Nice bike trails (and a great bicycle store downtown)

+ It is near the Iowa River

+ Nice park in general with activities like a dog park

      + Camp host on-site

      + Decent sized campsites

      + Playground for the kids

      Cons:

+ It can get busy on a summer weekend

+ Noisy - right by the highway

+ Mosquitos are really bad here

Waterloo - Lost Island Waterpark KOA

      Something for everyone

Great RV park. Lots of room and cabin rentals for folks that don’t have an RV. The fenced dog park was fantastic for those of us with dogs. A lake with beach area and an area for fishing founded it out! Would recommend!

      Wilder City Park

      Beautiful city park

Wilder Park is a beautiful city park. Very much a gem, quiet and peaceful . 50 + sites with about half of them full hook up. Costs for a full hook up in 2022 was under $25 a night. The park has two fishing areas, a dog park, pickle ball, volleyball mini golf, basketball and two playgrounds. A beautiful walking and bike path connects the parks to the neighboring cities. A free dump is also available. We highly recommend this park. 1

      Twin Anchors Campground

      Small, Close Campground

The campground was nice, but it seems more for RVs. Sometimes you have to share a fire pit with other tents if it's busy. They have a small petting zoo and a small beach. This place feels more like a neighborhood verses camping in nature. Most people use this as a "summer home".

      Prairie Bridges Park

      Very nice!

Great small town campground. Very quiet, especially on weekdays. Great place to take long walks with great paths and scenery. Small town Iowa with convenience store close by.

      Beed's Lake State Park Campground

      Camping by a beautiful lake

Beeds Lake campground offers an opportunity to camp by a picturesque lake with a beautiful waterfall.

There are many campsites to choose from. My only negative point for Beeds Lake is that the campground is very "campgroundy". Many of the RV sites are very close together, which is the norm in Iowa. However, there are a few on the outskirts that have a little more privacy.

      Things to do:

      • Nice trails to hike or bike
      • Beautiful small lake, great for kayaking and fishing
      • Paddle boat rental available
      • Man-made waterfall
      • Fishing (lake and beneath the waterfall)
      • Enjoy the nearby town of Hampton

      Timmons Grove County Park

Electric sites only, but beautiful area

All campsites at Timmons Grove are$18/night and are electric. I have visited this place many times but only camped once. This place has never been busy when I have visited.

I generally do not camp electric, so$18/night was steep for non-electric tent camping. There is no shower and the restroom is a port-a-potty.

The area itself is really beautiful. There are good hiking trails, including a walk through some wildflowers. Bird watchers will love this place. Also expect to see deer and turkeys.

There is boat access to the Iowa river as well as a public hunting area(I have not gone boating or fishing here, or hunting).

Other than the nearby highway, which is not too bad for noise, the campground is really quiet.

The price and the nearby highway are my only real complaints here. I am giving it 4 stars.

      Briggs Woods Park

      Nice campground, lots of options

Brigs Woods is close to Webster City, IA.  There are several campsites, cabins, golf course, access to canoeing or kayaking on the Boone River, along with hiking trails, swimming and fishing.  This is one of the many county parks spread across Iowa.  They have reasonable rates and many do not take reservations.  One area is good for a group of campers as the sites are in a circle.  A walking bridge links the back loop to the other loop that has the bathhouse making it a shorter walk.

There are sites with full hookups, H2O and Elec, or Elec only.  Here is the website: https://www.mycountyparks.com/County/Hamilton/Park/Briggs-Woods-Park-and-Golf-Course.aspx

The wonderful thing about the park is the magnificent trees.

    Guide to Steamboat Rock

Pine Ridge Park sits along the Iowa River in Steamboat Rock at an elevation of approximately 1,050 feet. The camping area features level, grassy sites in an open setting with minimal tree cover. During summer months, temperatures typically range from 60-85°F with occasional thunderstorms that can cause rapid changes in river levels affecting riverside campsites.

    What to do

Hiking nearby trails: Pine Lake State Park Campground, located about 7 miles from Steamboat Rock, offers multiple hiking options. As camper Kerry M. notes, "There are hiking trails (all around lower Pine Lake)" that provide scenic walks along the shoreline and through wooded areas.

Paddling the Iowa River: Pine Ridge Park provides direct river access for water activities. Kerry M. mentions, "It is right on the Iowa river near a takeout, so you can put in upstream and paddle down, or do as I do and paddle upstream and then back down (works when the water flow is not too swift)."

Fishing opportunities: Stoehr Fishing Area has "excellent shore fishing on the two ponds. The main species are black bass and bluegill, however I did catch a northern pike once," according to Kerry M., making it a worthwhile stop for anglers staying near Steamboat Rock.

Disc golf course: Prairie Bridges Park in nearby Ackley offers disc golf among its recreational amenities. Dan B. describes it as having "disk golf, fishing, basketball court, shuffle board, clean shower houses" and mentions it's "not expensive."

    What campers like

Peaceful camping environment: Many dog-friendly campgrounds near Steamboat Rock offer quiet settings. At Pine Lake State Park Campground, Mitch notes, "If you camp mid-week you may be the only folks around. Very peaceful."

Affordable camping options: Eagle City County Park provides budget-friendly camping near Steamboat Rock. Jonathan mentions, "For a free spot with picnic tables and fire pits, it's definitely 5/5. I wish more municipalities had these types of campgrounds!"

Clean facilities: Dakins Lake County Park maintains high standards of cleanliness. Michelle A. reports, "The campsites are large and very clean... The shelter is very nice and overlooks Dakins Lake. The camp host was very responsive and helpful."

River access for dogs: Eagle City County Park offers excellent water access for pets. Megan C. states, "Wow! This campground surprised us! Not only is it directly on a river with wildflowers, it has a pit toilet and hand pump water."

    What you should know

Gun range noise considerations: Pine Ridge Park is located near a shooting range that may disturb noise-sensitive dogs. Kerry M. advises, "This campground is quiet at night, but I will point out that it is near a popular members-only rifle and pistol range... you may hear the continuous sound of gun fire during the day."

Seasonal flooding risk: River levels can change quickly after rainfall at several campgrounds in the area. Brian F. cautions about Pine Ridge Park: "If it rains heavily, the campground can flood quickly when the river rises."

Limited shade at newer facilities: Dakins Lake County Park is still developing its tree canopy. Debra T. notes, "Unfortunately being a newer campground there are no established trees for shade, we found the best spots are on the south side where the camper door faces east."

Permit requirements changing: Some previously free camping areas now require payment. Brian reports about Eagle City County Park: "Note that they do now require a permit to stay here. Sites are first come first served with no reservations. Cost is $10 and you can pay up to 30 min after claiming your site."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Steamboat Rock feature play areas for children. At Wolf Creek Rec Area, Kerry M. mentions, "The campground has a nice playground, which was a feature we enjoyed when my daughter was little."

Nature observation opportunities: Eagle City County Park provides wildlife viewing chances alongside camping. Kerry M. suggests visitors can "Enjoy the sound of pheasants and song birds in this area. It is not heavily wooded, but there are oaks, walnuts, and buckeye trees as well as a variety of aquatic plants."

    Tips from RVers

Best camping loops: For RVers traveling with dogs to Pine Lake State Park, specific loop selection matters. Kerry M. advises, "The campground itself is nice, with some decent sized campsites, many having a great view of upper Pine Lake."

Hookup availability: Alden Riverview Campground offers good electrical options for RVers with pets. Greg K. notes, "30/50/110 power. Drinking water and dump onsite but not on sites. Wifi! Hot showers, playground, boat launch, fire pits, grills, good camp host."

Limited big rig access: Not all dog-friendly campgrounds near Steamboat Rock accommodate larger RVs. At Eagle City County Park, Jonathan points out, "You could easily park a van here, and probably a small trailer but nothing all that long."

Proximity to supplies: RVers should note the distance to necessities. Debra T. cautions about Dakins Lake: "Zearing does have a small gas station/convenience store, the closest grocery store is about ten miles away so come prepared!"
