Sitting directly across the highway from the Mesa Verde National Park visitor center, Ancient Cedars Mesa Verde RV Park puts campers within a few minutes' drive of the park entrance, making it a functional base for multi-day visits to the cliff dwellings. The surrounding terrain mixes forested areas with more open sections, and "shade trees between spaces" give the RV sites some separation from one another, even if that separation is limited. The campground runs from March through November and accepts rigs up to 65 feet, with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer available throughout.
Sites are close together. That comes up repeatedly in reviews and is worth factoring into trip planning, particularly for larger rigs with slide-outs. One reviewer with a 41-foot fifth wheel noted that trees and tight spacing prevented opening the awning. Pull-through sites make navigation easier for longer rigs, but campers with tent setups should ask specifically about site conditions before booking, as at least one reviewer found a tent site uneven and poorly graveled. The campground enforces a lights-out policy at 10 p.m. to reduce light pollution, and Kim C. notes that on clear nights "you can see so many stars in the sky."
Amenities are extensive for a private campground of this size. A recreation room includes a pool table, TV, and board games. There's also a swimming pool, hot tub, mini-golf, a dog park with agility equipment, laundry facilities, and a small camp store. A horse-riding stable operates next door. Cell service is reported as reliable. WiFi is available, though the park discourages streaming. Cortez, about 10 miles east, covers grocery and supply needs. Campers can also find places to camp near Mancos if this park is full during peak season.
The cancellation policy has drawn complaints. One reviewer lost a full reservation payment after needing to cancel 13 days out, which falls within the 14-day no-refund window. Reading the fine print before booking is worth the extra few minutes, especially for summer trips when the campground fills up. Janice O. found the campground "clean and our campsite had a nice table," and the management has shown flexibility in some cases, including extending stays on short notice when campers had vehicle trouble. Reservations are available by phone, and booking well in advance is advisable for July and August visits.
