Camping options in Aztec, New Mexico encompass a range of established campgrounds and dispersed sites throughout San Juan County. Notable locations include Ruins Road RV Park within Aztec city limits and Alien Run Trailhead Basecamp offering primitive camping. The area provides several full-hookup RV parks with amenities alongside more rustic options for tent camping, with most campgrounds situated along the Animas River valley or on nearby mesas offering views of the surrounding landscape.

Many campgrounds in the region operate year-round, with varying levels of amenities and accessibility. The road quality can differ significantly between developed parks and primitive sites. As one camper noted, "The road in was quite rough and washboarded, so I had to drive slowly at about 10 mph for a while." Lake Farmington provides camping with basic facilities approximately 15 miles from Aztec, while Brown Springs and Angel Peak Scenic Area offer more remote experiences. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F, making shade a premium feature, while winter camping requires preparation for freezing temperatures. Most established campgrounds provide at minimum vault toilets, but water availability is inconsistent across locations.

Campers consistently mention the diverse terrain and views as highlights of the area. Several visitors appreciate the balance of convenience and natural setting, with Moore's RV Park receiving positive reviews for its "nice shady sites" and swimming pool. For those seeking more solitude, the mesa-top locations provide expansive vistas. A recent review of Alien Run noted it as "a gravel parking lot with a shelter and bathroom" but gave it five stars for the "flat, very clean pit toilets, picnic tables with shade and a great trail." Most tent and RV sites in the region are within 30 minutes of services in Farmington or Bloomfield, making them convenient basecamps for exploring nearby attractions like Aztec Ruins National Monument or the quality fishing waters of the San Juan River.

Morefield Campground — Mesa Verde National Park

      Hit or miss

Campground is ideally located in an area without other easy options to get to Mesa Verde’s dwellings. We stayed on Taos loop with a tent and roof tent for one night, and used showers and laundry.

Tent pads are level, parking sites are not, but not all that far off. Bathrooms were functional- tap water is cold and potable. Sites are moderately spaced and about 50% are shaded by scrub oak.

After hours check in is not clear, but there is a sign at the camp store that gives the basics- grab a sit without a reservation tag and pay the next day. Sites are expensive as others have noted. Campers were arriving until around midnight which was pretty disruptive, but that could have been because we were near the front of the loop.

Showers are hot and private but certainly not a spa. Laundry is reasonably priced but only half the machines were working.

TLDR- Another camper summed up the campground as “hit or miss”. Spot on.

      Missionary Ridge Road

      Horrible

If I could give zero I would. The Drive is beautiful however there are at max 3 viable camp sites. We drove 15 miles up the road and Henderson lake is beautiful but no actual camping. Just warning people looking for a quick campsite.

Morefield Campground — Mesa Verde National Park

      Convenient location

Stayed in early Sept ‘23. Convenient to be inside the park for getting up to the top for our tours. Not a lot of vegetation shade but privacy was decent and our site backed up into a bit of some woods. I don’t have the site number anymore (assigned at check in) but we were in the Zuni loop near the bathrooms. To this day I think about the Jerusalem beetle we saw here because it freaked me out but also remains the most interest bug I’ve ever seen. WiFi available, breakfast for purchase by check-in as well as a camp store and laundry.

      Mancos State Park Campground

      Nice spot

All the sites are shaded, lake right next to it. You do have to buy a day pass & camping pass to camp here. So it’s $35/night total

Morefield Campground — Mesa Verde National Park

      Good enough campground

We were happy to have a small motorhome as we watched larger trailers, vehicles struggle to find a spot and get level. Okay value with the senior pass, but somewhat overpriced for others. Positive is decent free showers. Still 20+ miles from the tours.

The pricing listed is not correct. Campsite start at $59.00.

      Forest Road 316 Roadside Camp

      Great spot

There are so many spots available, some shaded some not. A bunch of cows all around too. It’s also a very easy gravel road to drive on. We walked around & there were some rough spots way back but mostly all very easy to drive.

      Chutes and Ladders Dipsersed

      Beautiful and Buggy

Amazing views of Mesa Verde especially Park Point. There are a lot of designated, numbered campsites along this road. I went as far as site 8 easily in a Subaru Outback. I could have gone further down the road if I wanted to - no high-clearence needed. Some sites are pull-through and some are back in but all have ample space for multiple tents, multiple cars, or an RV. Firepits at all sites but there is a fire ban in place. Was here early June and the midges are horrendous. If you get a site on the South side the wind helps a bit but I ended up hiding in my vehicle for most of the evening. On Sunday night it was very busy and people coming in around 7-8 struggled to find a spot. Monday night was nearly empty.

Arboles Point Campground — Navajo State Park

      Beautiful and Quiet Campground

Spacious campsites with a fire pit picnic table. Some of the picnic tables had metal canopies over them. Most of the campsites in our loop were pull through and level with electric. The views from our campsite overlooked the lake. The bathroom and showers were clean.

    Guide to Aztec

Campground options near Aztec, New Mexico range from established sites with full amenities to primitive dispersed camping areas. The landscape includes facilities like Ruins Road RV Park located within Aztec city limits and Alien Run Trailhead Basecamp offering more remote experiences. Most campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, while Moore's RV Park & Campground also provides cabin rentals for those seeking additional comfort. The surrounding San Juan Valley offers a mix of desert terrain and river access points, with several campgrounds positioned near the Animas River.

Road conditions vary significantly throughout the camping areas, with many sites accessible via gravel roads that may become rutted during wet weather. "It's a gravel parking lot with a shelter and bathroom. The road is ok. You do have to straddle some ruts but nothing a low to the ground car can't handle. It looks like it would be slick when muddy," noted one visitor about Alien Run Trailhead Basecamp. Weather patterns include hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and cold winters with occasional snow, particularly at higher elevations. Several campgrounds implement seasonal closures or limited services during winter months. Cell service remains strong near town but becomes spotty in more remote areas, especially in canyons and draws away from major roads.

Waterfront sites rank consistently high in camper satisfaction, with the Animas River providing a natural backdrop for several camping areas. Ruins Road RV Park receives positive feedback for its proximity to the river, with one camper noting it offers "a nice view of the trees along the Animas River and a short distance from the river." Lake Farmington campsites provide water recreation opportunities with boating and fishing access, though reviews indicate the sites themselves have limited shade. Public lands surrounding Aztec feature primitive camping with fewer amenities but greater privacy. Mountain biking trails near Alien Run Trailhead Basecamp attract outdoor enthusiasts, making the area popular for mixed-use recreation. The region experiences busy periods during summer weekends and holidays, with many tent and RV sites requiring advance reservations during peak season.
