The layout rewards those who arrive early and climb higher. As Kathy S. notes, "view improves as you go up," though RVs should stick to the lower sites, particularly sites 1 through 3, where there is more room to maneuver and at least one pull-through option. Campers with rigs longer than 35 feet should know the road has significant potholes and that backing out of the upper area is likely. Pieces of furniture serve as informal site markers, which reviewers find functional if unconventional.
Noise is worth factoring in. Highway sound carries through the campground continuously, though the sites themselves stay relatively undisturbed by other campers, especially on weekday evenings. "Area is buggy and dusty but great views of the rocks and secluded," writes Aly V., which captures the trade-offs accurately. Campfires are allowed, firewood can be gathered on the ground nearby, and cell service is available. Pets are welcome.
Navigation deserves attention before arrival. iPhone users relying on Apple Maps have reported being routed to a dead-end private road. Google Maps produces more reliable results. The campground also appears under at least two other names on mapping platforms, including Chutes and Ladders Dispersed and BLM across from Mesa Verde, which are listed as nearby sites. The campground closes from December 1 through April 30 for wildlife preservation, per signage on-site.
Campers who want hookups or a more developed setup can find camping destinations around Mancos that include options with amenities CR 34 does not provide.
