Peaceful Slice of Heaven on the Pacific Coast

Really cool atmosphere just steps away from the beach. The sounds of the waves can be heard right from your site. Nice facilities. Yurt is highly recommended and sleeps 5. Really liked that each yurt had its own deck, picnic table, and fire pit. The shrubbery around the campgrounds was really cool and offered extra privacy. They also had equestrian sites as well as tent and electric RV. Cannot wait to go back my only regret was that we couldn't stay longer!

      Camp with Horses!

We've stayed at Nehalem Bay State Park several times and always enjoy it.  In the past we have camped in our tent and we've also stayed in one of their cozy yurts.  This time was a first for us because we stayed in one of their primitive horse camp sites in our van, and had the opportunity to ride horses on the beach!  The campground has a ton of amenities and is located adjacent to the beach, bay and just minutes to Manzanita or Nehalem. Planning to return again soon!

Clatsop State Forest Northrup Creek Horse Campground

      Quiet secluded forest camping

We had the campground to our self midweek.  This is a wonderful campground far enough off the beaten path and being listed has a horse camp most likely keeps the crowds down.  While this is a horse campground, only 8 of the sites are for horse campers, a small tent/RV camping loop of 3 sites is also available, but the parking pads are small so don't think most RVs will fit in the spots.  Each campsite has a picnic table and metal fire ring.  Nice flat ground for your tent with plenty of shade from the large trees.  Campground has a hand pump for water.  Dish wash stations are through out the campground for pouring out you dish water.  The horse camp sites all have corrals for the horses.  Nice hiking trail starts at the tent camping area, "Big Tree Trail" will take you past some monster sized trees.  This will be a campground we return to the next time we visit Oregon

      Nehalem Bay State Park Campground

      Large beach campground

Nehalem State Park is located just south of Cannon Beach in the town of Manzanita. There beach lends some spectacular views of the coast. The beach is accessable from several short trails.

The campground has 265 campsites all of them include electrical and water hookups. There are also 18 yurts some with wheelchair ramps. There are also a number of walk-in and horse campsites. Each loop has a centralized bathroom/shower facility with hot water.

The only place to put garbage is located at the entrance of each loop which can be far hike. Campsites are a bit close together with no real privacy. Due to the location of the playground and bathrooms we had a steady stream of people cutting through ours and other neighbors campsites.

      Fort Stevens State Park Campground

      Buggy and crowded

I grew up in Washington state camping and when people say a campground is buggy, I take it with a grain of salt, usually. This campground has BUGS, huge mosquitos that do not quit biting. They made it difficult to be outside. On top of that, the sites have you packed in like sardines with no privacy. The only reason I gave this campground 2 stars was the walking paths off of the campground to get some exercise (still not forgiving on the bugs, in fact, even worse) and we was an elk the morning we were leaving. Otherwise, most likely won't be back to this campground.

      Camping with horses and friends

great place, camps set apart, park wheelbarrows to keep horse area tidy.

Had visitors over to meet and greet my horses

Should have checked the gate hardware more closely, horse caught her halter in an opened eyebolt ( had used my own panel gate while she was stalled)

      Peaceful and lovely in December!

Great beach state park! Short walk over the dune. Not terrible , but gets your blood pumping. The view of the ocean, the endless beach and the grass-covered dunes are worth the walk! We had the D loop almost to ourselves. I can imagine it feels pretty crowded in summer. The sites’ proximity to each other sees pretty standard for state parks. There is an illusion of privacy with the abundance of trees but no foliage on the trunks. We were next to our friends but didn’t feel crowded or imposed upon. The outside of the loop had angled back in sites. The inside were straight back in and shorter. Some sites are longer than others. Saw a large class A and 5th wheel comfortably backed in. We are about 48 ft with trailer and pick up and fit fine. Close to Manzanita, walking trails in the park and so many hikes nearby. Went to Short Sand Beach yesterday and it was beautiful. Granted having sunny weather helps!

      RV-camping

Loved this State Park! The trails around it were fun and led from the camp right up to the beach by the old ship wreck. My kids ages 2-14 always had something to do and we brought our bikes. The camping sites and RV sites are cheap compared to Utah, Washington and Idaho rates, but they were also very nice! A little close together but nice. You have to book your site months in advance at this place because it fills up fast. So much to do in this area! Close to seaside, the fort Stevens retired military site was free and interesting-with a scavenger hunt and prize at the end for the kids who complete it. Also, close to Astoria which also has many things to do! Loved that it was close enough to drive over the Columbia River to get to Washington to see the light houses!

    Guide to Ilwaco

Equestrian camping near Ilwaco, Washington provides access to miles of forest trails through the Pacific Northwest's dense coastal woodlands. The region experiences a temperate maritime climate with average annual rainfall of 70-85 inches, creating lush riding conditions throughout spring and summer months. Trail conditions in the area vary seasonally, with some routes becoming muddy after heavy rainfall periods.

    What to do

Beach horseback riding: Access beach riding trails at Nehalem Bay State Park Campground, located about 90 miles south of Ilwaco. "Great dune area. Always horses riding on the beach too. Super neat experience," reports Jamie B. The campground provides dedicated beach access points suitable for horses.

Trail exploration: The Clatsop State Forest offers extensive riding trails from Northrup Creek Horse Campground. According to Kelcie T., "We used the day use area this time but soon we plan on taking a trip up with our horses and riding the trails." The trail system extends through multiple sections of the forest with varying difficulty levels.

Fishing breaks: Rainbow Falls State Park offers opportunities to combine riding with fishing. "People played in the river. Camp was clean and spacious," notes L & K S. The river access points provide natural breaks during trail rides where horses can rest while riders fish.

    What campers like

Dedicated equestrian sites: Northrup Creek Horse Campground provides specially designed spaces for horse campers. Dexter I. explains, "The horse camp sites all have corrals for the horses. Nice hiking trail starts at the tent camping area." These dedicated facilities make overnight stays with horses more comfortable.

Private camping atmosphere: For riders seeking quiet camps, Snag Lake Campground offers seclusion. "Primitive, private campsites around a beautiful small lake," states Anna N. The limited number of campsites means less competition for space during peak seasons.

Trail variety: Experienced riders appreciate the diversity of terrain. At Rainbow Falls, Rich M. notes, "The river had a lot of great swimming holes for all ages." These water access points provide natural rest areas during longer trail rides.

    What you should know

Seasonal limitations: Most equestrian facilities operate seasonally. At Fort Stevens State Park, Gary M. advises, "The mosquitos were out in full force in the campground." May through September typically offers the best riding conditions with fewer insects in early fall.

Trail maintenance varies: Some trails receive more regular maintenance than others. At Snag Lake, Jaime J. warns, "Beautiful area, but a lot of campers have left trash behind." Always check current trail conditions before planning extended rides.

Parking restrictions: RV Outdoor Adventures and Cabins offers larger parking areas for horse trailers. JoAnna S. describes it as a "Large 36 acre peaceful Rv Park on the Clatskanie River," providing adequate space for horse trailers with tow vehicles.

    Tips for camping with families

Water activities: Combine riding with swimming opportunities. At Rainbow Falls State Park, Kirstin K. shares, "We loved that this was right by the river and we could go swimming." These dual-activity sites keep non-riders engaged while others enjoy trail rides.

Open play spaces: Look for campgrounds with fields for children. "Big open field for playing, horseshoe pits, small playground, river trail, and fishing," mentions ashley E. about Rainbow Falls State Park. These amenities provide entertainment options beyond horseback activities.

Historical elements: Fort Stevens State Park offers educational opportunities between rides. Jill T. notes, "There is sooo much to do in this area! It's rich with history and we could have easily spent another week touring around." Historical sites provide rainy day alternatives when trails are too wet for riding.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection for trailers: Choose sites specifically designed for horse trailers. Daniel S. cautions about Northrup Creek: "While primarily a horse-friendly campsite, there are few RV/tent sites, but definitely not friendly for larger RVs." Reserve appropriate spaces well in advance during summer months.

Hookup availability: For longer stays with horses, consider electric hookups. Jesse H. mentions about Northrup Creek, "Pit toilets were very clean! Big Tree Trail for hikers was well maintained." Basic amenities make multi-day equestrian trips more comfortable when returning from trail rides.
