Swimming, fishing, and riverside camping draw visitors to The Bend Gem, a free dispersed site along the Fremont River in Utah's canyon country, positioned within a short drive of Capitol Reef National Park. The river is the centerpiece. Campers use it for swimming, washing dishes, and cooling off after long days on the trail, though the water runs cold even in summer.
The campground splits into two distinct areas: an upper section that functions essentially as a flat dirt lot with limited privacy, and a lower section closer to the river where sites are more sought-after. Getting to the lower spots requires navigating a rocky drop at the top of the road, which most 4WD vehicles can manage but may stop rigs with hitch haulers or low clearance. Those who make it down find direct water access and open sightlines toward the surrounding mesas and plateaus. "Zero light pollution so the stars were incredible," notes Spencer L., who camped at the back of the lower road near a swimming hole. The upper area still has its appeal: at least one reviewer reported falling asleep to the sound of the river from there.
The turnoff is easy to miss. It sits in a bend next to a guardrail, and the entrance comes up fast from either direction. No cell service for Verizon users, so download directions before heading out. Bugs are manageable during the day, but mosquitoes increase after dark, making repellent worth packing. The site has no restrooms on-site; the nearest facilities are roughly five minutes away by car.
Fishing happens throughout the day along the reservoir section, and Azaali J. noted the site can get busy without feeling crowded, with enough space between groups even at peak times. Pets are welcome, campfires are permitted, and alcohol is allowed. One reviewer reported finding mountain lion tracks within 50 yards of their site, so wildlife awareness is reasonable here.
Campers wanting more developed options nearby can look at Mill Meadow Reservoir Dispersed — Fishlake NF to the south, or Forsyth Reservoir to the northeast for a different setting in the same general corridor.
