Buckhorn Draw Wickiup Site Dispersed Camp

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Dark skies and sandy soil greet campers who pull off I-70 at Buckhorn Draw, a free dispersed area on BLM Land — Price Field Office land outside Ferron, Utah. Sites sit roughly a mile from the interstate, yet Lydia P. notes you can "cannot hear or see the traffic" once you're settled in. The gravel road in is mostly solid, though a washboard surface means slowing down pays off. Cell service is available, which campers staging a longer desert route tend to appreciate.

The area is large enough to absorb a crowd without feeling packed. Sparse trees provide some cover between sites, and one reviewer observed that the trees in the area will hide other campers even when occupancy is higher. The soil here is sandy rather than the clay-heavy ground found at some nearby spots, which means the area drains reasonably well after rain. Summer days can push into the upper 90s, and the site is dry and dusty by mid-season, so shade is limited and water should be packed in.

ATV and SXS riders use this area regularly, particularly during daylight hours. Once the sun goes down, activity tends to quiet considerably, and the absence of light pollution makes the night sky a draw in its own right. The site suits both overnight stops and longer stays, and the BLM designation keeps it free with no reservation system.

Other free dispersed options are close by for campers who want to scout alternatives. Exit 131 Dispersed Camping sits roughly a mile to the south, and BLM 7198 Dispersed — San Rafael Swell is a few miles further into the canyon country that begins north of the main pull-off area. Buckhorn Draw works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with pack-in, pack-out conditions who want a no-cost stop with reliable cell coverage along the I-70 corridor.

Campers regularly cited the spacious, level sites and good cell service at this convenient highway-accessible location. Many mentioned it as an ideal stopover spot, though some noted dusty conditions in summer and occasional highway noise.

Easy access, quiet, spacious.

No one else was here, but there's room for a ton of campers. There was a wind warning in San Rafael Swell of up to 35 mph gusts, but my campsite saw no wind. Trees were barely swaying, maybe 1-2mph breezes at best.

Great spot. Will definitely return.

Close to Highway lots of privacy and good reception

Started to go right off the 70 but that takes you to another BLM spot much further away. This is just 2 miles from the highway and it's very quiet and lots of small trees for some shade and plenty of room for big rigs.

Very nice…very open

This spot was much easier to find off I-70 since it’s associated with an exit. No gates to find. It was still 98 degrees at 8pm when I stopped, but no humidity and totally tolerable. Had the place to myself. Would absolutely stop here again.

Great spot

4/28/25 stay on our way back to CO. Was very quiet, only one or two other campers spread out. Road is gravel/ paved to the pull off sites. Mile off the interstate but cannot hear or see the traffic

Spaced nicely

This campground is quite sandy with sparse trees that provide a decent amount of cover. It’s a decently sized lot. There were many people here, but it still felt pretty well spaced apart.

Peace and quiet for us.

We needed a place for the night after leaving the crazy busy area of Moab and this was the perfect spot. We will absolutely return again but with the ATVs.

There were several people camping and riding their ATVs and SXSs but when the sun went down it was quiet and so dark. The night sky is beautiful.

Pack it in and out but a perfect place for us. It had rained the day we arrived and it was not muddy and no problem getting in and out.

The road getting in has a bit of wash board so just take it slow.

Good quick stop

Lots of spots. Visited after a rain storm and dirt was dirt and not clay like others spots in the area. Trees in area will hide other campers.

Great rest stop

Lots of flat ground, highway noise wasn’t too loud but also wasn’t too far away from the road.

Great views with good cell service

This is a huge area. Right off the highway has dozens of good sites all levels with good views. Fire ours built in most. There are more if you continue north down the good gravel road which leads into fantastic canyon country. Bonus is good cell service. Only downside is dry and dusty in summer.
