Wedge Overlook

Campers are Saying

Wedge Overlook, near Price, Utah, is a stunning location for those who appreciate breathtaking views and a bit of adventure. This area offers dispersed camping along the rim of what’s often called the "Little Grand Canyon," providing a unique backdrop for your outdoor experience.

Visitors rave about the incredible scenery, with many sites perched right on the canyon edge. As one camper noted, “The views are breathtaking,” making it a prime spot for sunrise and sunset photography. While amenities are minimal—just a vault toilet at the main overlook—this location is perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy nature in its raw form.

The access road is a well-maintained gravel path, though it can be a bit bumpy, so take it slow. Campers have mentioned that the area can get busy on weekends, but if you venture a mile or so from the main road, you’ll find quieter spots to set up camp. For those who enjoy biking, there are trails that run parallel to the road, offering a fun way to explore the area.

If you’re planning a visit, be sure to bring plenty of water and prepare for the elements, as it can get quite hot in the summer. Wedge Overlook is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to immerse themselves in stunning landscapes and enjoy a peaceful camping experience.

Wedge Overlook Dispersed

This area is really just designated dispersed camping. No developed fee CG, NO WATER, no dumpsters. Vault toilets at wedge rim. BLM is going to construct a new developed fee CG in 2023 and fees of $20 will be charged. Not sure if all the existing free designated dispersed will go away. Cell signal is excellent. Closest town is Castle Dale 20 mi away. Road access is a wide graded gravel road from Castle Dale.

Amazing views

There are so many campsites in the area it should be hard to find one you like. Don’t just look at the end of the main road where there is a pit toilet and a small parking area. The first area you see has a lot of spots close together to the right of the pit toilet. To get swag from the crowds continue for up to a mile and get away from the crowds.

There are also many campsites if you turn left at the last junction on rout 407 which continues to one of the three good water trail heads

Amazing views!

This was our first visit and it was amazing. The views are breathtaking and we enjoyed a site right on the canyon edge. The mountain biking along the rim was rocky but easy. We rode mostly on the road but there is a single track that parallels the road east of the Wedge Overlook. There are 2 pit toilets along the rim which was a bonus.

We look forward to coming back in the winter!

Awesome views

20 miles of dirt road with some washboard. Drive slow. Views are worth the time invested. sites are not clearly defined and small. Our 22’ trailer barely fit. Busy with ATV’s and windy. No internet or cell service.

Wedge is Awesome!

20 miles of dirt road to get to the overlook.

Kind of far for a class c motor home, but we made it one piece. 😅 Slow and easy!

Pretty easy to get a spot on the edge of you come early Friday.

Beautiful views and not much else!

Views of "litte Grand canyon" are prey amazing, with singletrack trails that are incredible. Very exposed with minimal shade so it gets very hot in the summer. Bring lots of water. Dirt road is usually passable but would get very messy in the rain.

Beautiful view!

Easy to get to, dispersed camping all along the Wedge. No amenities except for a vaulted toilet at the actual overlook. Very quiet and peaceful. More busy on the weekends. Perfect for mountain bikers. Would highly recommend.

The Wedge Campground - Beautiful Views

Free to camp all along the Wedge. Multiple campsites available. One vaulted toilet at the beginning. No other amenities. T-mobile cell coverage very good. Very peaceful and quiet during the week, however it fills up quickly on the weekends. Easy drive to get there as it's a well maintained gravel road. Definitely recommend! We will be back.

Basic but beautiful

The wedge is located on the rim what is known as the little Grand Canyon. This is aptly named. There are perhaps 100 campsites scattered out long about 3 miles of road. Many of these are on the rim of the canyon. My judgment the road can be driven carefully by any vehicle with good tires. The last part of it gets rougher than the first part. There is no water there is no garbage pickup but there is a pit toilet at the beginning of the road at the main overlook.

Little Grand Canyon

Nice little slice of heaven up there. It is a massive canyon so wind is very prevalent, be prepared for that.

Breathtaking views for sunset and sunrise, and amazing history just a couple miles in. Great ATV recreation area

Amazing and Secluded

Great place to camp, only a few miles on a dirt road and you're in the middle of nowhere! No light pollution or sound from civilization. A nice, quick get away from town.

A site with a view

This is a free campground on public lands (BLM) in Utah’s San Rafael Swell. There is one vault toilet and a few campsites along the edge of a beautiful canyon carved by the San Rafael River. We have camped here twice, the most recent being last October, 2019. We managed to snag the one at the end by the toilet. We could sit on one of the large rocks just steps from our truck camper and watch the canyon change colors as the sun went down.

Access is via graded gravel road. We haven’t seen any larger RVs but there may a few places they could fit. There are mountain bike trails nearby including one that traverses the rim. There were some campsites along the rim on the opposite site of the road. There were a few sites in the junipers near us where a group camped.

Dispersed camping with amazing views!

Great camping spot, and the views are amazing! The road leading in is about 20 miles so make sure you have everything you need, but if not there is a town about 40 minutes away. We stayed here at the very beginning of October. It was 80 during the day and 40s at night, so dress accordingly. Sites are first come first serve and free!

Worth the drive to the little grand canyon!

This was a great campground! Small campground with about 10 sites. Some were pretty big and could accommodate an RV. We used a tent.

Around dusk the wind picked up and almpst destroyed our camp and sent it into the canyon. Tie everything down or be in camp for the show! The ground is hard for tent stakes. There are a few scrub mesquite trees for shade.

There is a pit toilet in the campground, but no water and no power. This is primitive camping!

We hung out on the rim of the canyon for sunrise and sunset. Awesome experience!

Great primitive camping area

Overall, loved the experience. It was a tad busy during our stay! We were able find a great site not too far from the actual overlook. Bring water, nowhere to fill any tanks. Lots of trailers, RV’s and tent campers. Stars at night are awesome. Beware of wind gusts! I will for sure be back again, I loved it here.

All the Splendor, half the crowds

This gem, not far out of Castledale Utah is a real treat. It's perfect for a quick weekend or day trip, and has enough to do to support a longer stay. To start, the canyon rim is breathtaking, having coffee in the morning as the sun rises, or a cocktail or wine as it sets just puts your soul back in alignment again. There are some official campsites, however they were full and we had to dry, primitive camp. This was more than fine because we got to be closer to the rim, had privacy and was still relatively close to the vault toilets. This is a have to see it place, and its perfect for larger families with ample room. ATVS are a common recreation in the area so if you have one this is perfect. This is Desert, so it will be hot. This is also Mountainous so it might get cold fast, so pack accordingly. Food is a pretty good drive away, but not terrible, water is scarce as you would imagine. Bring plenty of both. Pack in pack out. Enjoy.

Simply amazing!

I was worried about the roads out to the wedge, but the were great. I was driving a non all wheel drive but suv vehicle and it did great. Tip: it’s worse the slower you go. Once to the wedge I found a campsite during the Memorial Day weekend. The second day I packed up my campsite and returned about 8 hours later to return to the same campsite. So availability was great. The wedge itself was great and the views were spectacular in late May. (During Memorial Day). I camped alone. Many people were 4wheeling, dirt biking, atving and mountain biking, as well as hiking around the campsite but not enough to be intrusive. Next time I camp there I will be bringing a mountain bike. The terrain is perfect for it. Most of the noise quieted down around 8. And I was able to find some rest. The second day I did a lot more exploring and traveled a ways down into the wedge. And the surrounding area. The second night I was able to find my same campsite from the night before and slept comfortably. The third day I packed up my camp and headed out to check out Buckhorn Wash. it’s a pictograph wall art monument type location with 2,000 year old wall paintings. It was pretty incredible. After that I headed back to SLC. The experience as a whole was great and it did rain and it was enough to make you worry, but not enough to make it bad, granted this was late May between the 24-27. Highly recommended. Only request is that you clean up after yourself. This is our planet. And it is all of our responsibility to take care of the last few wilderness areas we have.

Very basic rogue camping area

This was 5 minutes from the little grand canyon. Very basic camping. Rogue camping if you will. But I nice place to park and set up. Amazing views 5 minutes away at wedge overlook.

Views are unbelievable !

This is dispersed camping. No amenities provided such as table or grills. They do have rock fire rings and sign/posts identifying the campsites. There are bathrooms at the Wedge Overlook as well as a more established campground with tables provided if you’d rather do that. Views are amazing there too! What I lived about our site ( site 5) was that is was at the halfway point of the mountain bike trail. This site is at the top of a shallow drainage. Other sites are literally right on the rim...see video.

Unbelievable Views

Deep in The San Rafael Swell lies The Wedge Overlook campground. The campground lies right on the rim of The Little Grand Canyon. Beautiful views, hiking and biking trails. Some areas you can put a RV but it is a first come first serve area. Be prepared to drive on long dirt roads. If you love not so developed campsites, this area is a place for you.
