      The Vineyards Campground & Cabins

      Disappointing and unnecessarily confrontational experience.

I booked and paid for a campsite at The Vineyards in my self-contained Sprinter camper van. I checked in without issue and had already spent one night there when the park manager, Lisa, approached me while I was relaxing inside my van to inform me that my vehicle was not welcome.

She stated that the city requires RVs to have hookups and be commercially manufactured. However, the campground’s published policies explicitly allow management to approve converted camper vans (and I am fully self-contained). It also allows for truck campers, which I suppose theoretically could have sewer hookups, but I assure you my custom converted Sprinter is more aesthetic than a truck camper, if that was her concern (no offense to my truck camper friends).

I also could not find the city ordinance she was referring to.

I understand that campgrounds have rules and that management has discretion to enforce them. What I don’t understand is why my reservation was accepted, why I was allowed to stay overnight, or why the situation needed to be handled so confrontationally.

When I offered to leave if they would refund my unused second night, Lisa told me it was too late for a refund and that I might as well stay.

So apparently my van was prohibited until refunding my money became the alternative.

I wasn’t causing a disturbance, requesting special accommodations, or asking to use facilities I hadn’t paid for. I was simply enjoying a campsite I’d reserved and paid for.

The campground itself is lovely, which makes the experience even more disappointing. A straightforward, respectful conversation about their policies would have been entirely reasonable. Instead, I was made to feel unwelcome at a place where I was already a paying guest.

If you’re traveling in a self-contained converted camper van, I’d strongly recommend getting written approval before booking, regardless of whether your reservation is accepted. And given that I am now reading other complaints of the staff being rude, I might avoid this spot altogether.

COE Benbrook Lake Mustang Park Bear Creek Campground

      Large and beautiful.

Very large park with a lot of camping options. Wildlife is abundant. Cabins with RV site. Multiple boat ramps. Full sun, shade or partial. Would be a5 star if it was full hookups.

      Loyd Park

      Quiet and Serene

We stayed here for four nights and it was a welcome retreat after staying in mini RV parks. Our spot was number 184. Not right on the water, but we can see the water from one of our windows. If we came back here again and we couldn’t get right on the water. I would choose a site with more shade like site number 190 has lots of shade. We’re here in October so it’s pretty warm. The hookups work well and the place is very well-maintained. I haven’t tried the public restrooms as our RV restroom is fine. I would definitely come back here again.

Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland Dispersed Camping

      Worked Well for Overnight

Was transiting between central Texas toward Colorado in an off-grid TT and didn’t want to venture far off 287 for a comfortable, quiet & safe place to stay for the night. Taking the Trinity exit north off the loop around Decatur and using the navigation to the LBJ Grasslands to Park Rd 904 access was easy (& scenic). Once inside you could tell there’d been recent rain but the wet areas were easily avoided. Sites are spacious and we soon found a pretty great vista view from which the spectacular sunset was just a great bonus. Will make a note to use this stop en route out of the central part of the state going west for future trips.

      Pilot Knoll Park Campground

Lake Front Camping close to Dallas

Lots of large back in spots with 50/30 amp plugs, water hook ups, fire pit and picnic table. Many spots are have direct access to the lake to launch a kayak or SUP, boat launch in the day use area. Clean, online reservations takes a little bit of navigating, I had to sign up for an account. Lloyd of tall trees provide shade. Paid $30 per night for mid week in June.

      Pilot Knoll Park Campground

      Great First Camping Experience

We brought our small family of four out to tent camp for the first time this last weekend. I really enjoyed how well kept the grounds were and did love the open space between sites and the water, giving lots of space for the kids to play. Really pretty views. And despite the close together sites, I did still feel like it was peaceful and every one was respectful of one another.

    Guide to Benbrook Lake

Benbrook Lake offers year-round camping experiences within 30 minutes of Fort Worth, Texas. The reservoir spans 3,635 acres with 110 miles of shoreline at normal elevation of 694 feet. Weather conditions can range from hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F to mild winters, making spring and fall the most comfortable seasons for tent camping and outdoor activities.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Benbrook Lake's waters contain largemouth bass, white bass, and catfish, with dedicated fishing areas at COE Benbrook Lake Mustang Park Bear Creek Campground. "It is very good for fishing as well and the campsites seem nice and clean," notes one visitor who frequently kayaks the area.

Water recreation: When lake levels permit, multiple boat ramps provide access for kayaking, canoeing, and motorized watercraft. "We spent one night on our way west. Clean spacious sides, just off the highway but not too close," reports a camper at Cowtown RV Park, which serves as a convenient base for lake activities.

Hiking trails: The surrounding parklands feature moderate hiking paths with minimal elevation gain, suitable for families and casual hikers. According to a visitor at Dinosaur Valley State Park Campground, "This is a beautiful State Park with miles of trails, year round family activities, and dinosaur foot prints."

    What campers like

Shade coverage: Many sites at Loyd Park provide relief from the Texas sun. "All sites are paved, several are lake front, and the majority of them are well shaded. We camp here often - by ourselves, and with friends," shares a frequent visitor.

Spacious campsites: The region's campgrounds typically offer good separation between sites. At COE Benbrook Lake Mustang Park Bear Creek Campground, "I stayed overnight here while traveling from Galveston, Tx to Ohio. The employees were friendly and accommodating. Check in was easy and the campsites offered some privacy as they were spaced pretty far apart."

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings and evenings present opportunities to observe local wildlife. "Wildlife is abundant. Cabins with RV site. Multiple boat ramps. Full sun, shade or partial," notes a camper describing the natural setting at Mustang Park.

    What you should know

Seasonal flooding: Lake levels fluctuate significantly, occasionally impacting camping areas and access to water recreation. A camper at Rocky Creek Park reported, "Park is nice but closed again," referring to periodic closures due to high water.

Reservation requirements: Premium sites and upscale glamping near Benbrook Lake often book months in advance, particularly for weekends and holidays. At The Vineyards Campground & Cabins, a camper noted, "Check-in was very easy, sites were very clean and well maintained... Immediate access to the lake and a beautiful view!"

Heat preparation: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity. Pack extra water, portable fans for tent camping, and sun protection. One visitor at Mustang Park observed, "It was 111° the long weekend we stayed here but we found a spot with some trees by the lake and had electricity hook ups so it was actually quite nice."

    Tips for camping with families

Water features: Several campgrounds maintain dedicated swimming areas separate from boating zones. At The Vineyards, one visitor raved, "We boated, kayaked, rented a golf cart and more. Great water pressure, sewer hookups and more. Incredible sunsets and my boys caught a 12 lb and 20 lb catfish right off the fishing dock."

Playground access: For families with younger children, select campsites near playground facilities. "Check-in was very easy, sites were very clean and well maintained, playground was amazing with an awesome 'roller-coaster' swing that the teenagers even loved," reports a family staying at The Vineyards.

Seasonal events: Some campgrounds offer structured activities during peak seasons. A visitor to Cowtown RV Park shared, "We stayed for a few nights while traveling through Fort Worth and enjoyed this park. It was a great location, quiet and had a playground for our kids."

    Tips from RVers

Concrete pads: Many RV sites feature level concrete pads, eliminating the need for extensive leveling. "The host bends over backwards to make your stay pleasurable, Larry escorted us to our pull through cement location and made sure we had everything we needed," writes a camper at Cowtown RV Park.

Full hookup availability: Select sites offer water, electric, and sewer connections, though availability varies by campground. "We spent three days there swimming and hiking around. Great times! Campsites are a little close together nearest the water but probably the best sites in the Park," shares an RVer about Loyd Park.

Shower and bathroom facilities: While luxury glamping accommodations near Benbrook Lake typically include private facilities, most standard campgrounds provide clean communal options. "The facility is a bit dated, reminds me of the parks my family traveled to when I was a kid, but clean and accommodating. The showers were in need of updated shower heads but other than that it was nice," notes a visitor to Cowtown RV Park.
